We’re in a fairly humid stretch here in the Hudson Valley – I thought those days were past, silly me! And we’re due for some very warm temperatures for the rest of the week. Oh, September, you fickle month, you!
A big chunk of time was spent in the waiting room of the car dealership yesterday. Oh, how I wanted to escape! The television was on – turned to the NYC Fox affiliate – as news was breaking about the capture of the man who was behind the bombs in the city and in New Jersey. I was happy to know he’d been caught, of course, but I had to listen to endless filler as the anchors ‘guessed’ and ‘supposed’ to fill time until they actually knew the facts. When an ‘ex-FBI agent’ got on the horn and decided to use his questionable expertise to attack Democrats and Obama when the breaking news had nothing to do with them; and said something like ‘they let this guy in this country,’ when in actuality, he immigrated with his family at the age of seven, I had to get up and move far, far away. Too many people with a political agenda spouting off when they don’t know what they’re talking about.
Another reason I don’t watch that crap at home. Being a captive audience did not make me happy. Fortunately, just after I moved, a woman asked one of the staff to change the channel. To Seinfeld. Sigh of relief.
A great spangled fritillary on the butterfly bush yesterday afternoon.
And this guy spun a complex web that extended from the porch railing to the gutter.
The black and yellow garden spider. You can see that he’d caught his prey and was protecting it. I saw a little gnat caught in the web, over on the edge, so I freed it. That didn’t make my spider friend happy, but I figured he had enough food for dinner.
He promptly moved very quickly to the edge of his web, presumably to guard against intruders.
Don came out to take a look. These guys are fascinating. I usually see them in the garden or down by the culvert. They spin this complicated web, with that seam you can see in the first photo, and then take it all down again rather quickly. I checked this morning. It’s gone.
If you’re squeamish, sorry! But really, you’re looking at a photo. Not the real thing!
Morning Glories to soothe the soul:
They’re still blooming!
Louise Penny’s beloved husband, Michael, passed away yesterday after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Louise and Michael showed us what true love is throughout this challenge, with a steadfast devotion that was unending as they made this journey together. May he rest in peace.
Happy Tuesday.
Linda @ A La Carte says
What wonderful photos. I find spiders and their webs fascinating! Your morning glories are still blooming and that is just a happy thing. I hate having those news channels saying the same thing over and over and yet saying so little. I don’t watch them if I can help it. It’s still cooler here this week and no rain today so I might get another coat of paint on my shelf as I really need to get it hung so I can have another place for some pottery! Sending you and Don hugs!
Claudia says
Sending it right back to you, Linda!
Doris says
I agree with Linda, the webs are fascinating! My morning glories didn’t do well but this morning I see a few trying to grow. Maybe late bloomers!
Claudia says
I hope you get late bloomers, Doris!

I do like your photos Claudia, even though I am not a fan of spiders. Their weavings are beautiful. I’ve noticed recently that a number of places I have been where TVs are ALWAYS on (Dr offices, car places, etc.) the volume has been dropped really, really low. Thank God! Last week at the Dr office I was able to read my Kindle in the waiting room and not be bothered by the external noise at all. Finally! Our Morning Glories were pretty much a bust this year. We had a few gorgeous blooms, but not the profusion we are accustomed to seeing.
Claudia says
I really dislike waiting rooms that have the television on. What about those of us who want to read?
Trina says
Even doctors’ offices and fast food places have televisions set to the news. I don’t understand the need for televisions being everywhere and on. When I have appts and such I sit as far away from them as I can. Don’t need my blood pressure elevated because of bad news. Speaking of spiders we had one outside our kitchen window. There was a part of the spider’s web that made me think of blindstitch embroidery. I would look for the spider every morning. Apparently after they lay their eggs they die. I was sad to see our spider gone. We are having rain and some parts of our area have flooded. Your morning glories are beautiful. I am so glad you post pictures of them. Thank you. I just read of Louise Penny’s husband passing. I am sorry to hear that.
Claudia says
You get used to watching the spider – she becomes a friend, of sorts – and then you miss them. I totally understand. I’m the same way.
Donnamae says
I love spider webs…as long as I’m not accidentally walking through them…..they are quite beautiful. Evidently we have a huge spider, on the back patio, that my sons’ named Boris. Now mind you, that was at least 15 years ago. But my youngest, who is now 28, said he checked…and Boris, or Son of Boris is still there! Can that even be possible? For the record….I am not going to check that out…I don’t like spiders. But, if they leave me alone…I leave them alone! Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
I don’t know – is that possible? Why not? Nothing would surprise me anymore! Nature is wondrous
Wendy T says
Flower photos, beautiful. Uh, spider photos, not for me! I’m surprised waiting rooms even have TVs these days….so many people are glued to their smartphones anyway. Me? I inevitably have a book, so I’m quite happy waiting and reading. We’re having a very short heatwave, then it will be cool by the weekend before another one.
Claudia says
I love spiders. I rescue them in the bathroom shower. Now I’ve got Don trained to do it as well.
I had a book with me. Couldn’t concentrate with all the loud noise from the TV.
Belinda says
The spider web is so beautiful. I find spiders to just be fascinating. Nature and animals, insects have so much beauty and can bring so much peace if only we allow it to happen.
We do not watch the news in our home. The only time I even check or read anything online is when there is something going on that I need to know about. I’ve found that I have so much more peace in my life since making this change. Whenever I have to sit in a waiting area of any establishment I pop in my headphones and listen to some sort of classical music or Native American flutes. I just cannot deal with the noise from the television which is normally a news report or the sounds of the other people in the room. I hate to even admit it but I just find myself being so annoyed by the conversations that I hear from people today. Do not even get me started on someone having a cell phone conversation in a waiting area.
I guess I’m showing my age! Which is fine with me. I hope that you and Don have a lovely day. Blessings to you both.
Claudia says
I found myself wishing I had taken my ear buds with me, but I didn’t. Lesson learned.
We don’t watch much news at all anymore. I’d rather be stress-free, or at least take a stab at it!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Beautiful spider and web! Nature is amazing.
Lately the news makes my stomach hurt quite badly. We have become the people I used to shake my head at….. burying our heads in the sand. We, of course, will vote. My husband is a poll worker at every election. We do consider ourselves informed. But this election cycle I worry that I may be getting an ulcer listening to the nonsense. Calling the press to assemble, (and they follow like salmon swimming up-stream) promising/ threatening a HUGE announcement…. which is nothing more than an ad for a new hotel….. and then a 30 second non-news ridiculous proclamation ~~ I just can’t do it any longer. It seems the press are merely puppets being made to dance by a mad puppeteer at his whim. Disgusting and oh-so-sad at what has happened. I’m thinking the words “Bring me your tired, your poor…..” will soon simply be painted over and forgotten.
Claudia says
I know. I feel the same way. I’ll write about this, but I made a decision yesterday to direct all my energy to Hillary Clinton and not against Trump. He sucks up any energy, positive or negative, and I refuse to give him any more of my mine. Everything will be positively directed to her.
Janet in Rochester says
I think all waiting rooms should be TV-free. For one thing, people carry their own “entertainment” with them these days, don’t they? According to my iPod, I have almost 4 days worth of music stored there, as well as a dozen downloaded books, 1000s of photos etc. Plenty to keep me busy for the hopefully-short amount of time I may have to wait. When I was working, I always kept a “real” book in my car because my commute was prone to frequent & lengthy traffic slow-downs & tie-ups, a number of LONG train crossings etc. These books saved my sanity on numerous occasions. I even read Herman Wouk’s “War and Remembrance” [paperback version 1000 pages] entirely in my car. Although admittedly, it did take me about 8 years. LOL.
Claudia says
I would have thought the same thing. I had my phone with me, my iPad, and a real book. I didn’t need to hear the television!
Nancy Blue Moon says
Your spider shots are amazing Claudia…I don’t know how or why this TV everywhere thing started but it is very annoying..such a huge waste of energy…They are on all of the time and rarely is anyone watching them..So sorry to hear about Louise Penny’s husband…
Claudia says
I agree. So annoying!
So sad about the death of her husband. But I imagine there is some relief as well – relief that he’s no longer suffering.
Lyndia from Northern CA says
One of the reasons I love reading your blog is I feel like this is the “normal”. Or maybe I should say “this should be the normal”. To identify with people is important, rather than continually be thinking “what’s happened to our world”. Is it really the people or is it our dreadful news reporting? Shame on them. We deserve better. I’ve made up my mind politically and I hope I never need to listen to this toxic person again. I’ll certainly be voting and with luck this terrible time in political history will be only a bad memory.
Claudia says
I sure hope it is, Lyndia. I want to shake off this toxic mess and move forward with hope.

Thank you, sweet Judy!

A question…I know your pics are copyrighted but if I saved one and put it on a canvas or framed it would I wrong? I love the butterfly pic so much!
Claudia says
You can save it, though I would like my watermark on it.
