Painting and Power Problems

October 5, 2009 at 1:07 pm by Claudia

Do you think the time has come to rake some leaves? They are everywhere and, believe me, this is just the beginning. I do love seeing all the pretty leaves scattered all over the property…just not the raking part of it.

I came home yesterday to our landline phone not working. Again. (I think it all goes back to the lightning strike last July – the day after I returned home from a trip.) Last night, as husband and I were watching a program on television that we had been looking forward to, the power went out. Our neighbors’ power was out, too. We had to call the electric company but, as previously pointed out, our phone didn’t work. Much craziness ensued with both of us trying to get our cell phones to work (coverage is spotty out here in the country) and doing our best to see the numbers in the dark. We did get through and about 2:00 AM we heard the big Central Hudson truck idling on our road. Bless these guys for shinnying up poles at 2 in the morning. About 3:30 AM our power came back on.

I’m starting to get a complex about returning from a trip…

Right before I left for Chattanooga, I painted 2 more tables. These are on either side of the sofa in the den.

The room seems bigger and brighter. I like that. Now for more projects… and for the massive house cleaning that must occur before my sister’s visit at the end of next week!

Have a great day!

Autumn Surprise(s)

September 21, 2009 at 11:23 am by Claudia

Our sedum Autumn Joy has the most intense color this year – I suppose it is because of all the rain. I love seeing this splash of color among the earth tones of Autumn. The garden is overgrown with maple leaves everywhere. Imagine my surprise when I saw this perfect little bloom:

At first I thought it was something else, then I realized it was my Butterfly Bush. Up until this year it hasn’t done much blooming – I forgot I had it! Tucked in amongst everything else, it is blooming beautifully and is a wonderful Autumn Surprise.

I have decided I love my new font and I’m keeping it! It makes me happy. That alone is reason enough, isn’t it? Thanks for all your comments – and your thumbs up for the font!

At 4 in the morning we were jolted awake by a piercing alarm – but only for a few seconds. We stumbled around trying to figure out which of the many detectors in this house went off. We have no idea. It didn’t last and never went off again. I don’t think it is anything wired into the alarm company or they would have called. We have two carbon monoxide detectors – but the windows were open and the one in the bedroom registered 0. There are also a few smoke alarms that are not wired into the main alarm system. Of course, I couldn’t get back to sleep for a while. Today I am convinced it was a fluke – dust or something setting off some alarm for a split second. Nevertheless, a frightening way to wake up in the night!

Alright, I must get going…hope your Monday is beautiful!

A Dollhouse Shop, Riley and Fall

September 9, 2009 at 5:47 pm by Claudia

I took this photo a couple of days ago – and there are even more leaves now! You’d think it was October here. I hope most of the leaves are remaining when my sister visits in October. She needs her fall-fix because she lives in Florida. It feels like fall here – a little cooler, a little more golden light. I know it isn’t officially, but if you looked at my lawn you’d be hard pressed to say it is still summer.

I have begun exploring some dollhouse shops in the area – and by area, I mean New Jersey. There is nothing in my neck of the woods. There used to be a little shop about 20 minutes from here – I went there with my husband once, long before I actually bought the dollhouse. The ladies there were so sweet and helpful. Several months later, after I’d been away working, we drove by (it was on the way to our local airport) and there was a half off sale going on. I didn’t have time to stop but it seemed ominous. It was. They went out of business.

So I am forced to travel even further south. There are 3 shops within about 15 minutes of each other in New Jersey – right in the area where my niece used to live. Today I went to the closest one – called Circus Circus.

Lovely shop. The owner was very helpful and has offered to show me how to electrify my doll house when I am ready to begin that part of the project. The dollhouse’s exterior needs some TLC – there is supposed to be trim around the roof and there is none…I want to replace the shutters, fix some shingles and repaint the whole thing. She couldn’t have been more helpful. I bought some glue and some trim and some magazines. I restrained myself from buying anything else. There were so many dollhouses around the shop that I was inspired – lots of ideas.

Yesterday, you remember, we took the dogs to the Vet’s. Scout needed rabies, a check-up, the usual. Riley, my damaged boy, needed his ears cleaned and his nails clipped, along with a distemper vaccination and a lyme/heartworm test. Sounds simple, right? Wrong. Riley was so abused as a pup that he won’t let anyone near his ears, his neck or his toes. He will bite if he feels threatened or scared. Normally, he is the most mild-mannered and gentle of dogs…nice to everyone, sweet and good. We have come to accept that our boy has issues and that we are blessed to have him as a family member. Our job is to love him and protect him and give him a safe home. He has allergies and about once a year his ears get really bad. So we have to sedate him, and then the Vet has to sedate him by IV and his ears are cleaned, his nails are clipped, and he is sent home with medicine (pills – no drops – he wouldn’t let me put drops in his ears!) He also has an antihistamine this time – maybe we can avoid more ear problems next year. He was so groggy when we got him home that he could barely walk and was out of it until this morning. It took two of us to get him in the house and up the stairs. Poor baby. Today he is back to normal – but I worried about him all day yesterday. I can’t help it – I’m his Mama.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
