Resting Up

November 26, 2021 at 9:16 am by Claudia

I’m so out of the rhythm of posting every day! I was sitting at the table this morning, working on my jigsaw puzzle when I suddenly realized I had to write a post. Two more weeks, then maybe a recovery day or two, and then I’ll get back on a regular schedule.

I worked two days this week but they were the toughest days so far. On Tuesday, I had to meet up with the van in Manhattan at 5:30 am, which meant I got up at 3:30 am in order to take the subway to the meet-up point. Then we drove to a beach on Long Island. It was beautiful in the morning, as you can see:

But don’t let that fool you. It was unbelievably cold and windy all day. And we were outside. No room in the interior of the cottage that was being used, so everything had to be set up outside. I had on three layers: long underwear, two pairs of socks, a thermal shirt, a sweatshirt and a down jacket, along with a hat and scarf. And I was still freezing, as was everyone else.We were out there for more than 12 hours.

Words cannot express how cold it was. All in all, it was a 14+ hour day. Came home, collapsed (after a long, hot shower) and then back at it the next morning. We filmed in Manhattan. Lots of scenes, lots of apparently complicated set-ups. We went overtime until midnight (started at 10 am), so I didn’t get home until after 1 am. The two-day combo knocked me out. I didn’t do anything yesterday but sleep in and laze around the apartment, getting back to the jigsaw puzzle which I had ignored for 3 weeks – no time. Last night, I went to bed early and slept in again. Thank goodness for this 4-day break. Everyone needed it.

It’s raining lightly at the moment. I don’t know if it’s supposed to rain all day. I hope not, as I have a couple of errands to run.

I’ve always heard this: filming is hard work and not at all glamorous. Boy is that the truth! But it is endlessly fascinating and I’m learning a great deal just by observing the process. My hat is off to everyone involved. I can’t conceive of doing this on a full-time basis. (Maybe it’s my age!)

Don and I were relieved not to have to make a big meal for Thanksgiving. He’s home. I’m here. Since our families are spread out across the country, we haven’t really had a traditional celebration in years. And we’re vegetarians.

The girls:

They’re still in these clothes, but I plan to give them something else to wear later today.

Thank you for all the birthday wishes. I had a lovely, low-key day. Don concocted a great meal, there were cupcakes with candles in them, and presents.

In truth, I am so damn tired. This experience has had such highs and lows. But I’m very grateful for this opportunity and that is what I’ll take with me. Gratitude.

More tomorrow. You’ll get three posts before I disappear for 5 days.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Sunday Catch-Up

July 9, 2017 at 11:04 am by Claudia

Hello, all!

This is our last day in La Jolla. Tomorrow will be the first day of our journey back home.

We’ve been eating and bookstore-ing and Whole Foods-ing and beach-ing.

Warwick’s has been in existence for decades and I used to visit this store when we lived here. Seeing it with fresh eyes after having been away, I applaud this independent book shop for its well-curated (yes, I’m using that over-used word) selection of books. They have everything here; many of the books would be impossible to find in a chain bookstore. Displayed beautifully, the books are able to show off and beckon you to pick them up and explore the world between the covers. Warwick’s also has a stationary and office supply/gift shop, as well.

But it’s the books I’m interested in.

We bought a Rand McNally road atlas, a map of California, a couple of spiritual books, Noah Hawley’s Before the Fall (for me) and Al Franken’s new book: Al Franken, Giant of the Senate (the title makes me laugh out loud.) That’s for Don, but I’ll read it, as well.

Beach:

Next time, we’re going to kayak.

So frigging beautiful. And the weather has been glorious. Yesterday was the first day I felt any humidity. That is why I couldn’t live in Florida. Too humid.

Ironically, with no more time left to visit the beach, I bought a bathing suit yesterday. Go figure.

While Don was doing a matinee, I walked to a shopping center nearby that has a Marshall’s, DSW shoes, and a World Market. I found two adorable hand towels at World Market for our bathroom, a bathing suit (sort of 40’s retro style) at Marshall’s and these shoes at DSW:

I couldn’t resist them.

As Don gave a ‘Va-va-voom!’ when he saw me in the bathing suit, I guess I made a good choice. Even though I miss my younger, slimmer body, Don loves my curves. Bless him!

Today, I’m going to do our laundry while Don is at the matinee and then I’ll see Escape to Margaritaville  again tonight for the closing performance. Don has had such a terrific time doing this show. He loves  the cast. They are wonderful people who are also a lot of fun. I’m so grateful that he’s had this experience.

We’ve decided to drive up the coast of California to San Francisco, where we’ll catch I-80 and travel through Nevada and Utah and Wyoming and Nebraska and Iowa and Illinois and Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. We’re really looking forward to the drive up the coast. I did it with my friend Rick when we first moved out here, but that was 24 years ago! Can’t wait to see it with my sweetheart.

Happy Sunday.

Strange, But Good

July 7, 2017 at 11:30 am by Claudia

A strange day yesterday, but good.

Breakfast at Harry’s:

According to Don, the original Harry was a bat boy for the Brooklyn Dodgers and he followed the team out west when they moved to Los Angeles. The walls are covered with baseball memorabilia and Norman Rockwell paintings, so yours truly feels right at home there. It’s still family owned and Harry’s son runs it now. It’s very popular, as you might guess, and the staff is fantastic. Of course, everyone knows Don by name. I expected nothing less. He’s a charmer, our Don.

By the way, I’ve only been here a few days and we’ve been stopped twice by people who recognize Don. The first time was in Ocean Beach on the Fourth. The second was at a coffee shop in Pacific Beach, where it turns out one of the employees had seen the production and asked me to take a picture of him with Don.

This is nothing new, by the way. It used to happen all the time when we lived in San Diego. When he was working in Williamstown, MA a few years back, people shouted out to him as he walked down the street.

After Harry’s, we drove to Ocean Beach or as we say it, OB, to visit the antique shops. OB has always been know for the antique shops and malls that are on the far end of Newport Street, a street that stretches down to the ocean. My favorite, Vignettes, is located there. I went inside Vignettes, but Lori, the owner wasn’t in, so I didn’t get to say hello to her. It’s really lovely there, beautifully – dare I say it? – curated. In this case, curated is the perfect word for the way in which the shop is staged.

And then I noticed that the shop next to Lori, which used to be a multi-dealer antique shop, was now a ‘brewery/bar.’ That was unnerving. I walked by it to another multi-dealer shop that I’ve always loved and had an enjoyable time perusing the aisles. Then I crossed the street to a newish shop, which was lovely. As I was leaving, I spoke to the owner, complimenting her on the shop and we got into a conversation about OB and Newport. It turns out that the multi-dealer shop across the street which I had just been in and which has been there as long as I can remember, has been sold to some chain store.

And the micro-breweries have been taking over Newport Street. I found this so depressing. Soon there will only be a couple of shops still standing and Newport will be one long stretch of bars, restaurants, tattoo parlors and head shops. Just another scruffy beach town.

“You can’t go home again” resonates for a reason. It’s never the same. Those shops were the treat I would give to myself when I had a day off during the summers I coached the Shakespeare Rep at the Globe. I don’t want that to change. But it is.

We got back in the car and were about to head up the 5 to Orange County to visit another favorite: Country Roads (an antique shop) but the traffic was so backed up that we turned around and headed to La Jolla, where we poked around in a vintage bookstore.

Don was really tired yesterday, so we went back to the apartment so he could rest before his evening performance.

Don went to elementary school here.

Dog Beach brings back lots of wonderful memories. Winston loved it there – we went often – and when Scout joined our family, she also learned to love it there. So many stories from that beautiful stretch of sand. Beautiful and bittersweet at the same time.

I don’t know yet what we’re going to do today. We didn’t end up at the beach yesterday, so I’m sure we’ll be there at some point today because Don won’t really have any time to do that Saturday and Sunday with two shows each day. His time here is winding down and he’ll miss it. He loves the show and the cast and having a Whole Foods nearby, as well as Harry’s Coffee Shop and the beach.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
