Some News

12-14 catalpa

Gray days here.

I took this shot of the Catalpa tree because, if you look closely, you can see the bean pods hanging from the branches.

Did I ever tell you we had some honeybees come back to the Catalpa in late summer? If you remember, we had honeybees that lived in the tree for years and then a few years ago, an aggressive bee or two got in there and they were attacking us if we got too close, so we called in a beekeeper. We didn’t do anything because we decided to wait it out until winter, when, sadly, the bee colony died out. They didn’t come back that spring. We covered the access holes with window screen material.

But one day this summer, Don saw bees going in and out of an impossibly tiny opening at the top of the screening. They weren’t aggressive and we were happy to have them back. They disappeared at the first hard frost, but I’m hoping they come back next spring. Honeybees, you are welcome here. Just don’t attack us.

Clarification: When I mention hanging lights on the porch, let me assure you there is no climbing involved. We drape the lights over the railings, from post to post. Easy as pie and nothing I can’t do rather easily. No ankle worries.

New topic: I knew this was coming out in December (it’s the January 2016 issue), but since it’s published in the UK, I have to wait for my copy to arrive in the mail. Honestly, I was afraid they might have scuttled the article – these things happen all the time in the magazine industry – and when I wrote to the Editor yesterday to see if I was indeed in the issue, I got an automatic reply that she was on maternity leave. I finally found some info online that led me to believe I was indeed in the issue, so I bought a digital copy at pocketmags.

12-13 doll'shouse mag for blog post

Shabby chic cottage renovation? That’s Caroline’s dollhouse! We’re the lead article. Whoo hoo!

12-14 article2

This is a screen capture from my phone. It’s much easier to read the digital copy on the phone than on my laptop.

Gosh, they did a lovely job on this. Katie Holloway, who is the editor, contacted me and asked me if I would consent to a feature. Of course! She sent some interview questions, which I answered, and asked me to send along some photos of the dollhouse. Since I had also been featured in American Miniaturist  this year, I made sure to take all new photos so that each magazine had a different (and not duplicated) set.

The interview was fun; it gave me the chance to tell my dollhouse story. And the last page shows a photo of the bedroom, along with the title:

Get the look…Shabby Chic Bedroom. Replicate the style of Claudia’s shabby chic bedroom with these similar items.

And there are photos of a bed frame, rug, dresser, chair and wallpaper in the style of the room I decorated. Such fun!

I’m thrilled.

I haven’t told Caroline yet. I’m going to wait until the actual magazine arrives and then I’ll give her a copy, just as I did with American Miniaturist.

A big, big thank you to Katie Holloway and everyone at The Dolls’ House Magazine for the article. They really did a bang-up job and I couldn’t be happier with the end result.

I’ve seen this magazine at Barnes & Noble occasionally. But it takes a while for British magazines to arrive. Since I know this question will come up, the best way to get a copy is to buy a digital copy at pocketmags (dot) com. It’s very reasonable at $3.99.

I don’t mind telling you, seeing that article yesterday was a much needed bright spot in my day. In my month, actually.

Happy Monday.

Gossamer Strands

August 17, 2015 at 8:30 am by Claudia

The area near our culvert is full of wildflowers at the moment. That’s where I’ve been taking the pictures you’ve seen lately. The growth is relatively untamed and it’s easy to ignore it and focus on the garden beds. But, just as the garden beds start to wane in mid-August, the masses of what some would call weeds but I know as wildflowers kick into gear.

It’s sort of fascinating down there. Beautiful flowers, lots of bees and moths, and some rather striking spiders.

8-17 bud

One of the payoffs of taking a macro/closeup picture is the reveal that happens. I couldn’t see those gossamer strands all around this flower with the naked eye, but they were there.

8-17 goldenrod bees

Bees sampling the goldenrod. And at the end of one of the flowers is a little red speck, which I take to be some sort of bug. Fascinating.

I spotted two yellow garden spiders. (They have varied names, but this seems to be the most common.)

They’re known for that zig-zag that occurs on the web. Clearly, they’re designers with their own special stamp.

8-17 yellow garden spider 2

The other yellow garden spider, just after having spun his strands around some prey. I watched as he did it. He was a whirling dervish. I couldn’t believe how fast he worked.

I guess he needed a rest after all of that.

Happy Monday.

Cats, Bees and Houses (Tiny and Very Tiny)

July 30, 2015 at 8:26 am by Claudia

Do you remember a recent post where I showed a picture of a Tiny House that was being built locally? Well, I was at a local political function last night and I heard a young man talking about living in a Tiny House and I was intrigued. I introduced myself and asked about it and it turns out he lives in that  house! He and his girlfriend built in and they love it. Small world! Maybe someday I can finagle a tour?

7-30 cat

This little cat has been hanging around our property. She’s skinny and beautiful and I presumed she was a stray. Don spotted her, too, and I put out a bowl of milk. Then I bought some cat food and put that out. They remained undisturbed. In the meantime, if I came to the front door and she saw me, she started meowing and walked right up the steps in my direction. Or, like in this photo, she immediately knew if I was at the window and, again, walked in my direction, making lots of noise.

So, yesterday, right after I took this photo, I grabbed some food and milk and walked around the side of the house with them. She walked right up to me and was rubbing against my leg, rubbing her body on the grass obsessively…but not at all interested in food. Something was up.

I finally made a sensible move and called my neighbor. When I uttered the words, “There’s this orange tabby cat hanging around our house, have you seen her?” she immediately responded with “Yes, she’s ours.” Ah. A sense of relief – she was being fed and taken care of, especially since I had already been worrying about trying to feed her in the winter – where would she find shelter?

Reminder: I’m allergic to cats.

The problem? She’s in heat. They’ve been trying to get her into the vet but it’s been tricky because her ‘heat’ has been erratic. All I know is that she was either on our porch or sneaking into the corral or right outside the kitchen window, constantly rubbing all day long. And this morning, she’s back again, announcing her presence with a very loud howl.

7-30 cat2

She’s beautiful, but she’s becoming a wee bit of a pain in the tush. Her name is Amber. As Don says, “Why can’t she be in heat over on their property?” For some reason, she’s picked us.

I worked on the Top Secret Project yesterday, only it’s not quite Top Secret at the moment because I let Don see the basic shape of the dollhouse. But that’s all he’ll be allowed to see. He’s excited.

7-30 DH project

The basic structure is in place. The walls and opening in the front haven’t been added yet. I was just dry fitting them to see if they would work. I’ll do a bit more today or on the weekend. Don is going away for a singing gig this weekend, so I should have plenty of time to play around with this and start painting the various elements.

Thank you for your wonderful comments yesterday. I take heart that there are so many of us that feel strongly about this issue. I just wish everyone felt that way.

And to close, another bee drinking in the delights of the liatris:

7-30 bee on liatris

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
