Post-Birthday-Post

11-22-sunrise

Sunrise this morning.

Lovely, lovely day yesterday.

Aside from getting something from the IRS in the mail which indicated we owed a huge chunk of money, even though I had sent in our tax payment in early November, which led to me panicking, running upstairs to the office and then remaining on hold for 45 minutes until I could speak to someone. I was hoping against hope there was a simple explanation; that our payment hadn’t been processed yet when the letter was printed and that the discrepancy in the amount due was just an additional late fee.

Whew. That’s exactly what it was. We owe a mere $21.00. Major sigh of relief.

As all this happened right before we were due to leave for dinner, I wanted to get it out of the way so I could relax!

Don took me to a local restaurant that I knew of but hadn’t been to yet. It’s called the Gunk Haus. Gunk is a word used freely around here, a shorthand for the local mountain range, the Shawangunk Mountains. Gunk Haus opened a few years back and they have a great menu which includes some vegetarian and vegan dishes, along with their meat entrees.

(Photos will be dark as everything celebratory happened after the sun went down.)

Here’s my adorable husband.

11-22-me

And me.

The food was delicious and we’ll definitely be going back. It’s in an old house/barn, which has been beautifully restored.

We came back to the house and Don made me go upstairs while he ‘arranged’ everything:

11-22-cake

The cake. Don’t you love the sentiment? It was made and decorated by a local bakery. It’s a flourless chocolate cake that is unbelievably swoon-worthy. Oh. My. Heavens.

11-22-themaestro

The maestro with his birthday extravaganza.

I made a wish, blew out the candles and we gathered up the presents and retired to the den.

11-22-presents

A box of caramels, some Crabtree and Evelyn hand cream and some foot balm (all set for winter!) I also received some earrings in a pretty leaf shape –  as Don kept saying, “I know you love plants” – and the most beautiful snow globe I’ve ever seen (photos tomorrow). Neither of us is normally into snow globes but this one is incredibly well made and very striking. The scene is a large cardinal surrounded by snow. Don said it reminded him of winter life around our cottage. It’s really beautiful.

The large package you see there? When Don asked me what I wanted, I mentioned a certain something and he came through:

11-22-nutting

Another Wallace Nutting. This one is much larger than my other Nutting. It’s called “Apple Pool.” Don told me he spent a long time at the antique emporium, looking at one, than another, but he kept coming back to this one. It’s gorgeous.

A closer look.

On the back:

We’ve decided that as we gather more of these beauties, we’ll hang them on the wall in the office/studio. Dad’s painting has moved to the upstairs hallway and it looks great there.

A piece of cake – oh lordy! – and a little boy named Z singing Happy Birthday to me on the phone. A perfect day.

Thank you for all the birthday wishes! You are so wonderful, all of you!

More tomorrow.

Happy Tuesday.

Will You Still Need Me, Will You Still Feed Me…

November 21, 2016 at 8:43 am by Claudia

11-21-messyme

I love this photo because it shows a less-than-perfectly groomed little girl. I don’t know what I was up to here, but I was clearly having a good time!

What can I say? It’s my birthday today.

A well-know Beatles song refers to the age I’m celebrating this November 21st. Gracious! How can that be?

As I write this, snow is blowing across the horizon outside my window. It’s very cold and windy. Don has plans for a celebration but I’m told they won’t commence until around 4:30. We’re going somewhere for an early dinner, then back home for some gift-giving.

I’m intrigued.

In the meantime, I’m writing this post and another one on Just Let Me Finish This Page (a book review for an excellent debut mystery – click here.)

I’ll think about my parents and my brother and my dogs and my sister and her family, as well as all my relatives. I’ll thank my lucky stars for my incredible husband, for a career that has been immensely satisfying, for work that is challenging, for friends who enrich my life, for this blog, and you.

Happy Monday.

A Quiet Sunday (and a Birthday!)

July 3, 2016 at 9:28 am by Claudia

A quiet Sunday morning. Birds calling, crows cawing, the occasional car or motorcycle on the road. Lovely. Some lawn mowing is on the agenda today. We didn’t do it earlier in the week because it had been so dry, but after two torrential storms, I think it needs our attention today.

Let me vent for a brief second: I hate Japanese Beetles! I hate bugs eating my plants!

But if you’re a gardener who won’t use pesticides, you’re up against it, I guess. Sigh. I’m doing what I can and I’m thinking of ordering ladybugs but then I read conflicting advice. Some say that those ladybugs can bring disease to indigenous ladybugs. Others say it’s perfectly okay. I have to make a decision in the next day or two.

Then again, the are part of the ecosystem and they also have the right to be and eat. Since I try to ‘do no harm’ I may just have to accept things and send my love to all beings. I’m not afraid of bugs and every being has a purpose.

7-3 annabellehydrangea

This is the hydrangea that is next to the porch railing – Annabelle hydrangea. It’s pretty big nowadays and very lush.

7-3 hydrangea

This is the Endless Summer hydrangea I planted a couple of years ago. It’s growing very slowly, but it’s awfully pretty. My other hydrangea – a limelight – is at the other end of the porch, but it doesn’t bloom until later in the summer.

7-3 balloonflower

A lovely balloon flower in the Memorial Garden.

7-3 hollyhocks

Oh, my heavens! Can I just say how fabulous these hollyhocks are? Yesterday, I came home from running an errand and I was struck by the height and gorgeous color and how wonderful they look next to the kitchen door. When this plant self-seeded, it (or, the bird carrying the seed) graciously decided to plop that seed at the end of the raised bed, thereby avoiding the window and the air conditioner. It’s as if it knew. Perfect.

7-3 bumblebee1

In that same raised bed – lavender. And a bumble bee.

7-3 bumblebee2

I am particularly fond of bumble bees. They don’t bother me and they hover nicely and stay in place so that I can take a picture.

The most important thing to tell you today is this: It’s my sister’s birthday! You all know how I feel about my sister. I adore her. We are incredibly close. There is an eleven year age difference between us but that has never been an issue. We are sisters. We are best friends.

She is one of the finest people it has been my privilege to know. These past few years have been tough ones, with both my parents in her charge because they lived nearby. She was the rock during their illnesses and my mom’s time in the nursing home. She was there for both mom and dad in a way I couldn’t be. All the while she was raising her boys and working full-time. I cannot tell you how much I admire her and how grateful I am for her presence in my life. My brother died in 1991. My other sister has disappeared from our lives. My parents have passed away.

It’s Meredith and me.

Don adores her. How could he not?

Do me a favor? Will you go and visit her blog and wish her a Happy Birthday? She has a new post up and there are some wonderful photos of her oldest son (home for a visit) and Little Z. Here’s the link.

She deserves everything that is good and wonderful in life.

Happy Birthday, Meredith!

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
