Deer, Flowers & The Girls

July 1, 2022 at 9:12 am by Claudia

To add to the loss of the tree, the deer have been particularly voracious this year. They’ve eaten the buds on countless coneflowers, every bud on my favorite day lily, and several buds on the black-eyed susans. I tend to forget to spray them with the deer repellent recipe, thinking, for some reason, that I don’t need to do it yet. That’s on me. Anyway, I mixed a batch of it the other day and sprayed everything. We’re due for rain and thunderstorms tomorrow, so I’ll make a new batch on Sunday.

It’s very depressing, but I didn’t notice it until Tuesday – the same day we lost the tree – and I was so upset about the tree that it didn’t hit me quite as hard as it would normally.

Then the Supreme Court crap. This week has – may I say it? – SUCKED.

So I’ve played with the girls every day, dressing one per day in a new outfit, trying to remain sane. It really does help! I’m almost 70 years old and I’m rediscovering dolls – who’d have thought? If I’ve learned anything over the past 5 years or so, it’s that we find peace and respite where we can.

Plus, these girls are displayed directly in front of me here in the den, so I get to see them every day. Pure pleasure.

First up on Wednesday was Madeleine (same dress but with the addition of a bow) –

Heavens, she’s lovely!

And yesterday, Pippa got a new look:

We took her hair out of the barrette.

Both girls have a little cleft in their chins. Adorable.

I think I’m going to dress Miss Imogen today.

It’s going to be very hot today – in the 90s.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Escape

June 26, 2022 at 8:22 am by Claudia

In my quest to escape from the insanity of this country, I asked Sophie if she would be willing to be my model for a photo session. A chance to get outside? She was in.

She’s a bit of a free spirit and refused to wear shoes.

I think she wants something from me.  Money? To accompany her somewhere? Candy?

These girls are a wonderful source of support and fun and escape, and boy, do I need it right now.

My new weed whacker/trimmer arrived the other day. I put it together yesterday and went outside to do some work before it got too hot, but the battery wasn’t fully charged. Drat! So this morning, I’ll head out there do some much needed clean up.

It’s very hot here this weekend, so any work has to be done early in the day.

My sister, who is an occupational therapist and works with small children, knows the system in a way most of us don’t. She wrote an extraordinary post about the Supreme Court/Roe v Wade decision and what being pro-life should really mean. (She’s pro-choice, as well.) I urge you to read it. You can find it here. It’s an eye-opener.

Messaged back and forth with a Russian friend from the Blythe community this morning. She was shocked at the decision made by SCOTUS. I asked her if abortion was legal in Russia. The answer? Yes. She said that there are many things that are wrong in Russia, many things she disagrees with. But in the case of abortion, Russian women have more rights than we do.

Okay. I have to get going.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Maeve

June 23, 2022 at 8:37 am by Claudia

Sometimes when I’m feeling a little blue, or am housebound on a gray day (like yesterday), I grab one of the girls and then I look through the Blythe clothes and dress her in something fresh. Then I take some pictures.

Every time I do this, my mood lifts. An added bonus; I get reacquainted with that particular girl.

Case in point: Maeve.

I had fun with the lack of light yesterday. She looks rather film noir-ish, doesn’t she?

Let’s go with that:

Oooh!

And my personal favorite:

I trimmed her eyelashes yesterday. They were too long. I also trimmed her bangs a bit. I have a bit of a struggle with her hair due to the fact that the customizer had placed a protective film over part of her head and face (many customizers do this.) Normally, that wouldn’t be a problem but she took forever to get here, over two months, so the hair near the top of her head is not quite fluffy enough and it has a slight crease. I’m not sure how to fix it – curlers?

I usually end up fluffing it out right before I take a picture.

She’s awfully pretty. Periodically, I consider selling one of the dolls. I’ve thought about that with Maeve. But when I pick that doll up and spend some time dressing and photographing her, I just can’t. For now, I can’t let any of the girls go.

It’s rainy again today, but tomorrow (someone’s birthday) should be much nicer. I have to run out this morning to buy a few birthday-related things and I must get a move on as I want to be back for the hearing at 1 pm. (Just read conflicting info – I think it is at 3 pm EST now.)

If you haven’t heard, the Committee is NOT going to hold hearings next week because they’ve received a deluge of tips and videos that they need to go through. So they’ll be back with more hearings in July.

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
