Foggy Friday

August 28, 2015 at 8:21 am by Claudia

8-27 foggy morning

Cooler nights and a foggy morning; signs that Autumn is just around the corner. There’s something wonderfully mysterious and cocoon-like about a foggy morning, don’t you think?

It’s starting to burn off as the sun takes over.

Re-entry time. After five days in Florida, two days on the road, and over 1200 miles added to the odometer, I was at sixes and sevens yesterday. Tired. Happy to be home. Worried about Scout. I decided to do  something, so I mowed part of the front lawn and pulled some weeds.

I spoke to Little Z last night when he called us to say “I pooped in the potty!” and “I’m taking a bath!” We made the appropriate cheering noises and told him how proud we were of him. When I was visiting, I was right there on the scene when another successful potty session occurred. Nothing makes me happier than to hear him say “I did  it!” when he uses his walker, or walks with his canes, or navigates the potty, or masters something or other. He is a joyful fighter and is fiercely intelligent. He is a hero.

I miss him so much it hurts.

8-27 car

The silver fox that made a 1200+ mile journey. Smooth as silk, very comfortable, and such a blessing for us.

I have a list of things to do today. One of them is to rinse off all the seashells gathered on our morning walk at the beach. I’m thinking this newest group of seashells would look nice in a glass container on our den bookshelves.

What else? I just finished The Tourist  by Olen Steinhauer and am ready to start The English Spy  by Daniel Silva. The Tourist was simply superb, by the way. Steinhauer is a master of the spy novel. He joins Graham Greene and John LeCarré as one of the best at writing that kind of secretive, maze-like plot. If you’re at all interested in that kind of thriller, I highly recommend his books. Happily, he’s written even more books that I have yet to read. Huzzah!

Happy Friday.

Low-Key

August 9, 2015 at 8:45 am by Claudia

8-9 limelight hydrangea 1

It’s been a low-key weekend here at the cottage. Scoutie is doing much better. Thank you for your compassionate comments yesterday.

Don went with me on a necessary trip to Michael’s yesterday. I had to get some supplies for the Top Secret Project. I had been planning on going by myself as soon as he returned home with the car, but he offered to go along. I was surprised, because he has no desire to walk through the aisles of Michael’s. Actually, neither do I, but sometimes I have to.

I should have known. Five Guys is across the street from Michael’s.

Ah, now it all makes sense.

Early morning reading. Late afternoon reading. Reading in bed last night.

I’m just about to finish The Cairo Affair  by Olen Steinhauer. I reviewed his most recent spy novel, All the Old Knives, earlier this year and quickly became a fan. I reserved The Cairo Affair  via our local library system (thank heaven for libraries!) His books remind me very much of the novels of John LeCarré. Excellent.

And that, my friends, is the extent of my ‘exciting’ weekend. I haven’t been sleeping all that well for the past two nights and I feel rather exhausted. So, today, by necessity, will also be low-key.

It sure is a lovely day out there.

Happy Sunday.

Ladybug, Ladybug

August 5, 2015 at 8:10 am by Claudia

How is that Don can hang out on the front porch for at least two hours and not one mosquito comes near him, yet when I decide to sit with him I have 5 mosquito bites almost immediately?

Despite Don scoffing at my claim of bites because “mosquitoes don’t come out this early in the day,” I was able to show him the evidence, in the form of an actual mosquito caught in the act.

People used to say that mosquitoes like me because I am pale. I’ve also heard the scent theory. I don’t know the answer, but I will tell you I hightailed it back into the house pretty quickly.

8-5 ladybug1

Right before the Mosquito Event, I was tracking this little ladybug on one of the butterfly bush stems.

I love ladybugs.

8-5 ladybug2

A little splash of red and black on green.

8-5 ladybug3

I was going to quote from the nursery rhyme that starts “Ladybug, ladybug fly away home” but, as is often the case, the rest of the rhyme is frightening, having to do with houses lost in a fire, etc.  Really? That’s a good idea for a kid’s rhyme?

Reminds me of my childhood nighttime prayer:

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
If I should die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

At least, those are the words I was taught. Again, really? A little child needs to chant “If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take” right before they attempt to go to sleep? Talk about worries and nightmares no little child needs! No wonder I was a kid who worried about everything.

It all makes sense to me now.

Just about to finish Murder in the Bastille  by Cara Black. This new habit of reading a book first thing in the morning is wonderful. I’m getting a lot more reading done and I feel less attached to my laptop. The next book up is The Cairo Affair  (also from the library) by Olen Steinhauer.

Though I love all the wonderful discoveries I’ve made through the Internet, not to mention the friends I have made through this blog, I am taking a stand. I refuse to be on the computer for several hours a day. Living daily life through a virtual world is no way to live. There’s so much more out there in the three-dimensional world to discover and learn and witness.

Like ladybugs.

(New post up on Just Let Me Finish This Page.)

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
