And…I’m Off!

September 11, 2014 at 8:15 am by Claudia

Today, I drive to Hartford for an afternoon rehearsal and then back home again. Four hours, round-trip, in what increasingly looks like rain and thunderstorms. I’m leaving Dame Scout at home and my neighbor is going to look in on her. Since we have to travel together again a week from today, keeping her at home in her familiar surroundings seems like the best option.

I finished Act Two yesterday. Then I mowed the dog corral and the whole front yard.

After that, I collapsed.

THURS autumnal zinnia

This zinnia just opened. I planted it in one of our barrels by the Funky Patio. The colors are quite autumnal!

I did some editing on yesterday’s post as the day went on and I remembered more details. Beah Richards played Sidney Poitier’s mother in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and she and Don worked together in an episode of The Practice, not L.A. Law.

I also worked with Robert Hays, Don’s longtime friend, in a production of Mister Roberts at the Old Globe.

And I believe that Don worked with Elinor Donahue in an episode of Get A Life, starring Chris Elliott. It’s a very funny episode with Don playing a cop who always wants donuts. In that same episode was Chris’ father, Bob Elliott, of the comedy team, Bob and Ray.

THURS M Glory & Candy Stripes

Of course, not on the list are countless wonderful actors and actresses and directors that the general public wouldn’t necessarily recognize, but who are every bit as talented as the ones on I mentioned yesterday. They work in theaters throughout the country, on Broadway and off-Broadway. That list, my friends, is just as important to us as the one on the blog.

THURS newishzinnia

I received my pre-publication copy of Deborah Crombie’s newest book, To Dwell in Darkness, yesterday. Though I was already reading another book, I started it last night. One is on the Kindle, one is in hardcover. Since I was charging my Kindle, I used that as an excuse to start the Crombie.

Makes sense to me.

I’ll be reviewing it on this blog at the end of the month.

Okay. Have to jump in the shower and get ready for a long day.

Happy Thursday.

Saturday: Alarms and Musings

September 6, 2014 at 8:37 am by Claudia

The peaceful calm of an early Saturday morning after a night of not-quite-enough sleep has been shattered twice by the sound of a smoke alarm.

The first time, the piercing sound came and went very suddenly. Don woke up and came to the head of the stairs and we both acknowledged that we had no idea where it was coming from.

The second time, Don discovered it was coming from our bedroom and he dismantled the alarm. When he took it apart, a dead fly fell out as well as some other stuff. We’ve had the bug flying into the alarm problem before and maybe this is a repeat of that problem.

So far, so good. It’s clearly one of our alarms, rather than the ones we have that are wired into our security system, because we didn’t receive a call from the security company. Sometimes they are a bit too overzealous about immediately calling the local fire department without checking in with us first.

Oy.

SAT m glories & Scout

Early morning. Ten morning glory blooms. Wowza! And Scout, of course.

Don’s leaving tomorrow and I got a call from Hartford Stage yesterday asking me if I could come in sometime this weekend to listen to the dialect work in their current show, which is in tech rehearsals. So I’m going to take Don to New Haven, help him unload, and then drive to Hartford for the afternoon. Then back to New Haven, where Miss Scout will be spending some quality time with her dad.

It adds a bit of hectic activity to the weekend, but doing it all in the same day without having to worry about Scout seemed like the best approach.

Totally unrelated thought: Why do I hear people referring to California as Cali nowadays? It irritates the h*** out of me. I lived in California for eight years and never once heard anyone refer to that state as Cali. Don lived there for the vast majority of his life and has never heard any of his friends or acquaintances or business associates say the word ‘Cali.’ We suspect it’s something that has emerged in the dialogues and lingo of the younger generation.

Note to them: Please stop.

And in keeping with my random thoughts: If you’re currently reading The Long Way Home by Louise Penny, please do not spill any of the plot beans, as it were. I am backed up and holding with books to be read and reviewed, so I am not going to get to it for a while. When I read it, I want to have the time to savor it. Which means I probably won’t be reviewing it, either. (We all know it would be a Huzzah! kind of review, anyway.)

Oh, and same thing for Personal by Lee Child.

No spoilers, okay?

Happy Saturday.

Adding: Figures & Books

September 3, 2014 at 8:44 am by Claudia

Yesterday, Don had to go into Manhattan to sign some contracts. He dropped our 13 year old car off for its annual inspection (glory be, it passed!) while he took the bus into the city.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I tackled the dreaded taxes. We end up filing for an extension every year because our taxes are complicated and usually one of us is gone during tax time. I sat at the kitchen table for 4+ hours, adding up figures for my deductions. Eventually, I broke free from the eye glazing land of sheet after sheet of paper with figures and sums and notes with most of the work done.

I had to; I would have gone nuts, otherwise.

Don, in the meantime, was figuring out his end of the deductions on his laptop while traveling on the bus. What a team.

He came home with a present for me.

Eeek! On the day of its release, no less. My TBR (to be read) pile is growing and growing with no end in sight.

This surprise was the byproduct of Don’s quick visit to B & N on the East Side (near his agent’s office) to get more books by an author he has just discovered.

william boyd books

He bought the book on the right at our library’s used book sale and was immediately riveted by Boyd’s prose. The other two books were picked up at B & N yesterday.

Reading material for home and away. I take him to New Haven on Sunday, where he will be acting in the Long Wharf Theatre’s production of Our Town. Then, in a few weeks, I travel to Hartford to work on Hamlet. It is that all-too-rare thing, my friends – we’re both working at the same time. And in Connecticut, only 40 minutes apart.

It’s unbelievably hot and humid around here this week. But I managed to get outside and take some photos toward the end of the day.

New Dawn in the early evening.

Two new book reviews up on Just Let Me Finish This Page. Both books are highly recommended.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
