Fading Gardens

October 7, 2022 at 9:17 am by Claudia

Bits and pieces of the David phlox are still hanging in there, bless them. It’s clear, though, that they’re preparing to leave for the winter. We had a sunny day yesterday – so welcome after several dreary and rainy days – and I took some time to look at the gardens. They’re overgrown, of course. I haven’t been weeding because of my back. Come to think of it, I probably wouldn’t have weeded them anyway. I usually lose interest in weeding by August.

Once again, I have a morning glory climbing the chicken wire fence that is lovely but has no flowers. Do you remember the days when I routinely had tons of flowers on the vines? Now, they seem to bloom much later, if at all, and it’s always just before a frost hits. Climate change? Soil problems? I don’t know. I’m reluctant to give up on them because I’m ever hopeful, I guess. I loved the look of those beautiful morning glories. Sigh.

Truth be told, I sort of gave up on everything after the drought. I spent hours watering the garden beds, especially the chicken wire fence garden. And some of the beds revived and did well. But others suffered.

I finished The Ink Black Heart  yesterday. Excellent! I’ve never had 1000+ pages move along so smoothly and effortlessly. It was completely engrossing. Sometimes after a particularly wonderful read, I need a brief palate cleanser before I make a decision as to what to read next. I’ve found that Georges Simenon’s shortish Maigret mysteries are perfect. I chose Maigret and the Man on the Bench  which was on my TBR pile. I suspect that I’ll start Maggie O’Farrell’s newest, The Marriage Portrait, after I finish the Maigret.

Today, I’m going to mow. I’ll be careful and I’ve made a vow not to take on too much. I’ll start with the back forty where the grass is very long, then, the corral area. But right now, it’s too wet with morning dew so I’ll have to wait until it dries.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Here We Go

July 19, 2022 at 8:20 am by Claudia

And here we go with the heat advisories. Today it will reach 92° with a heat index of 95° to 100°.

This is my least favorite part of summer. You really can’t go outside for more than a short time. I’ll water the plants on the porch this morning. We did get some rain yesterday, but not nearly what was predicted. I checked the radar and every big storm was either just to the north of us or just to the south. It’s like the storms got together and agreed to avoid us.

It’s not that I love storms and wind – I don’t – but the rain? Yes, please. Especially now.

I also woke up too early and that isn’t helping my mood.

I’m trying to stay away from the news this week, other than watching the hearing on Thursday evening at 8 pm. My spinning brain needs a break.

I’m just about to finish my book. Reading has also been slow lately. I feel too scattered and it has an impact on my concentration level. I read a lot last night in bed and saved the ending for this morning so I could fully appreciate it. This Mick Herron series is so darned good! The one I’m finishing is called Spook Street  and the next one in the series is London Rules, which is arriving tomorrow.

If you decide to read them, read them in order.

Okay. Time to water the porch plants and take some photos before it becomes unbearable!

Stay safe.

Happy Tuesday.

The Hearings

June 22, 2022 at 8:46 am by Claudia

I’m going to keep this short today as I don’t really have much to share except my rage at what was done to Shaye Moss and her mother, Ruby Freeman, by Rudy Giuliani and Trump. These good and patriotic Americans were slandered by the man who should have been protecting them. It’s mob behavior, of course, because Trump is first and foremost a thug with a lifetime of ties to the Mob. His mentor was Roy Cohn, for heaven’s sake.

These two women were subject to slanderous accusations and death threats, simply because they did their jobs. Because Trump/Giuliani concocted a bogus scenario and were happy to throw them under the bus. And the Republicans who testified were also subject to death threats.

Yesterday’s hearing was riveting. All of the hearings have been riveting.

Added to this, the news that armed police stood in that school in Uvalde and waited to get a door unlocked that was never locked while children and teachers were slaughtered. The powers-that-be are attempting a cover-up. But it’s not working. Innocent lives lost because the police did nothing.

It’s too much, isn’t it?

So that’s what yesterday was about: the hearings.

In the meantime, I finished the Mick Herron book, Real Tigers, and am about to start another Herron – Spook Street. I love his writing which is nothing short of superb.

An off-and-on rainy day today and tomorrow.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
