Spring: Fabric Eggs, Doves, Nancy Drew & Bunnies

April 15, 2017 at 9:36 am by Claudia

As sleep deprived as I was yesterday, I managed to put in a couple of hours work outside. The annual “raking of the driveway gravel which has ended up on the lawn back to the driveway” event took place and I must say it was far less involved than last year. I’m not sure why, because we sure got a heck of a lot of snow and Don was definitely using the snowblower. Oh wait, I know why: we have hardly any gravel left.

Someday, someday, we want to pave the driveway. But that is really expensive.

I raked out the front garden bed – where the boxwood and some rose bushes reside. And I cut back some of the plant stems that were left in place for the birds to munch on over the winter. Then I went back into the house and slept for a half hour while sitting in the chair in the office.

The grasses in the garden are growing by leaps and bounds!

The mail brought two packages I had been waiting for:

The Clue in the Jewel Box – Nancy Drew #20 – not my twentieth Nancy Drew, but number twenty in the series.

And these adorables:

Spun cotton bunny rabbits from Vintage by Crystal – the link to her Etsy shop is here. She has a huge following, but I must have been in some sort of fog because the first I learned of her was last week when Mary Engelbreit posted a couple of Crystal’s creations on Instagram. Off I hopped to the Etsy shop, where I was promptly lost in a land of pure whimsical delight. I see many more of her creations in my future because you know, dear readers, this kind of whimsey is right up my alley. And they’re small – these are about 4 inches tall. Perfect for a collector in a small cottage.

After this photo op, I moved them – temporarily – to the sideboard.

If you’ve been reading this blog for a long time, you might remember that my mom called me her “pink bunny” when I was a little girl. So, I had to buy the pink bunny and a companion, as well. (I have another wee pink bunny in the office.)

Then later in the day, I remembered my fabric eggs, which are usually stowed in the china cabinet in the den.

I made a slew of these – gosh, I think it was 8 years ago – when I was working in San Diego for six months. An old friend, who is a costume designer, loaned me her vintage Singer Featherweight while I was there and I proceeded to piece a quilt and make these. (Thanks, Ingrid! That loaner inspired me to buy my very own Featherweight several years later.)

One of the things I am going to do when I’m out in CA is visit my favorite quilt shop ever – Rosie’s Calico Cupboard. That’s where I got this fabric.

Even later in the day, I saw my favorite pair of birds.

While they were perched on the edge of the birdbath, a blue jay kept squawking at them. I’m sure he wanted them to move so he could have a drink.

They completely ignored him. Bravo!

Eventually, one jumped down to the ground and the other prepared to follow.

And then, to their perch on a catalpa branch.

They stayed there, gentle and peaceful, for about an hour.

This morning, birds were everywhere: Canada Geese flying overhead, red house finches, robins, wrens, a starling with the makings of a nest in his/her beak.

Goodness, I love this time of year.

I’m off to gather together the trash and recyclables for a trip to the town transfer station. And then, I think, a visit to a plant nursery that I like over in Rhinebeck.

Happy Saturday.

Too Darn Hot, The Garden, Egg Cups & Nancy Drew

April 12, 2017 at 9:52 am by Claudia

When I came in the house yesterday after working outside because it was so darn hot, I checked the weather app on my phone.

86 degrees.

What the heck? It’s too darned early for that nonsense. Since the window air conditioners have yet to be installed, last night’s sleep was a wee bit erratic. It was so darned hot! Thankfully, today’s temperatures have dropped back to the norm for this time of year. It’s a little rainy this morning and the high will be 70.

That’s better.

The unseasonably warm temps moved some of the plants along. This is what I observed yesterday.

The forsythia is starting to bloom. I see yellow splashes of forsythia all over town, but ours blooms a bit later since it’s on a higher elevation in the woods.

Hello, lilac leaves! They opened overnight.

The hyacinths started to open. We are now in the early stages of spring in the garden.

I cleaned out the memorial garden bed, which was full of leaves, as is/was every bed on the property. Then I went around to the side of the house and raked out that bed. I found a tuberous root that had come out of the ground, most likely due to the ground seizing during the thaws and refreezes that happened in March. I think it might be a day lily. After googling for more info, I replanted it, but whether it takes or not is open to question.

I think I’m going to add some day lilies to the memorial garden. Yep. I going to do that very thing. Scout, in particular, joyously greeted each new day as if it was a miracle. A day lily seems appropriate.

Rounding up the remainder of the egg cups. Many of these are on shelves in the china cabinets or on the bookshelves. On the left, a gift from a reader. This one was hand painted. It is one of the largest egg cups I own. Next to that, an adorable egg cup from Linda. The tail is a salter. Next to that, a Delft egg cup from Holland. Then my newest egg cup, from France. The design includes two groundhogs! Then a blue transferware egg cup. An egg cup from Devon, England – a gift from Mary. An egg cup from France that I found in San Diego. And finally, a goose egg cup – also from France – that I found in an antique shop.

Ta da! We’re done. I seldom buy them nowadays because vintage figural egg cups are few and far between and the ones I really love, I already have. The Disney egg cups are still on my radar – my dream would be to own the entire set from 1937. But they are very, very pricey.

A big old welcome to this edition of Nancy Drew – Nancy’s Mysterious Letter.  My favorite illustrations by Russell H. Tandy are the first eight or nine, which were done in the thirties. This is one of them – number 8 in the series. I want those shoes. But not the fur coat. One hopes that the Nancy of 2017 would eschew fur.

One more is on the way, and then seven to go and I will have all the Russell H. Tandy cover illustrations.

Someone asked what I would collect when I had accumulated all the Nancy Drews. I am an inveterate collector, as you know. Don’t forget I still collect McCoy Pottery, Roseville Pottery, vintage books, little sheep and lambs (figurines and otherwise,) egg cups, bakelite, Maxfield Parrish and Wallace Nutting prints. Oh, and wedding cake toppers.

See? There’s plenty to search for.

Yesterday’s email version of the blog post went out in the evening for some reason, rather than earlier in the day. Since I use Google Feedburner (which is free, thank goodness) I have no real control over it. Every once in while, Feedburner has a glitch or two. I’ll keep an eye on it. And I’ll say what I always say, just come to the blog directly. 99.9% of the time, I will have written a post for that day.

Okay. Time to get my butt in gear.

Happy Wednesday.

Rabbits and Egg Cups

April 5, 2017 at 9:40 am by Claudia

First bunny sighting: yesterday morning. Though it was still too darkish outside to get a good photo, I stood by the kitchen sink and smiled.

Bunnies. Spring is here.

This morning, I stood in front of the china cabinet in the kitchen trying to figure out where to display the plate and saucer I bought at Fish’s Eddy. And, as happens with all of us, I really took in the things I have stashed in the cabinet. I’m so used to walking by it and not noticing…you know what I mean.

I had forgotten about this lovely Emma Bridgewater bowl:

I echo the sentiment: Don’t let the farmer have his fun, fun, fun. Run rabbit, run, run, run.

(I just read a mystery where the farmers routinely shot rabbits and I had to skip over those paragraphs. Do Not Like. The mystery was excellent, by the way – The Dry.)

I can’t remember whether I bought this in England or found it somewhere stateside. Most of my Bridgewater was purchased in England – London, actually. I carefully packed it all and brought it back home – this would be about 16 years ago. But I vaguely remember finding a piece here. Was this it? I’m not sure. What I am sure of is that I really love it.

So, in honor of the bunny sighting and the bunnies and baby bunnies to come, I share this with you.

I’m back to limiting my news and Twitter time. I don’t want to be constantly angry or fearful. It’s a delicate balance, as every day brings more alarming news. But I can oh-so-easily fall in to the proverbial rabbit hole and become obsessed by what is happening every minute. So. A bit of twitter. Maybe  The Randi Rhodes show in the afternoon. And Rachel. That’s it.

It will be easier to strike this balance when I can get outside and start my garden cleanup. It’s too wet right now. Fingers crossed that I’ll be able to start on that next week.

More egg cups. And The Lamb With the Party Hat. And a little thimble with a cow on top (a gift from my friend Susi in Amsterdam.)

The egg cup with the two yellow chicks is a Fanny Farmer egg cup and it was the start of this whole collection. My godparents gave it to me when I was a wee thing and I kept it for decades. One day, in 2001 or 2002, I read an article in Martha Stewart Living about collecting egg cups and there, in one of the photos, was this egg cup! That was it. I was off and running.

The sun is coming out. More rain tomorrow. I will be traveling into NYC on Saturday to catch the matinee of Anastasia. I need to check in and take some notes.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
