Brown Paper Packages

November 13, 2015 at 9:03 am by Claudia

Late in the day yesterday, the boxes we sent from Florida arrived via UPS. It was dark out (so early these days!) and we opened the kitchen door (which has no protective overhang) to see three boxes, stacked one on top of each other, sitting on the door sill. It was raining, so why they weren’t put on the porch, I don’t know. That happened once before. I fired off an email to UPS because the boxes were already a bit wet and would have become wetter very quickly. To my surprise, they got back to me right away with an apology.

Now that I think about it today, perhaps the driver wanted to leave them up off the ground and the porch floor was already pretty wet. Maybe he thought we’d see them there more quickly than we’d see them on the porch. But I will make sure the drivers know to put the packages on the porch.

Thankfully, Don opened the door to let Scout out and there they were.

11-13 auntruthpainting2

An oil painting by my great-aunt Ruth, my maternal grandmother’s sister. Ruth also painted the small oil of the family farm in Orillia, Ontario that hangs by the front door. This painting hung in my grandmother’s living room. When she passed away, Mom hung it in her home. And now I have it. I’ve always loved the colors in this painting and I loved my Aunt Ruth.

We have limited wall space in this cottage. Or, we thought we had limited wall space until we had a little epiphany last night. Since we love collecting art and graphics, we are going to make this large stairway wall a big old gallery wall. We have paintings and prints stored under the beds and in the shed. And we always see things when we’re out antiquing that we want to buy but we stop ourselves thinking that we have nowhere to hang them.

Duh. We do.

This will be fun.

11-13 momsquilt

This is a quilt I made for my mom. It’s a wall hanging. I made it many years ago using the maple leaf pattern in honor of her Canadian roots. It was hanging on the wall in the condo.

As was this:

11-13 needlepointmom

It’s a needlepoint stitch sampler that I made for my mom. I was heavily into needlepoint when I was in my twenties. All the nieces and nephews received a needlepoint Christmas stocking from their Aunt Claudia. This piece was special and I had it matted and framed for mom. Can you tell she liked earth tones? I didn’t necessarily do it on purpose, but the same colors are in the quilt as well.

This will be a part of our gallery wall.

Meredith also needlepointed a beautiful landscape for mom, which was also framed, and she took that home with her.

The truth is, both Mom and Dad had already given us the precious things they wanted us to have. Mom started doing that many years ago. Dad did the same. So the things I packed up in Florida are mostly little memories of them – some of Dad’s tools, wind chimes that hung on their lanai, a cross or two from my mom’s collection – things like that. And lots of photos. Lots.

11-13 crochet

The two scarves that I’ve listed on Etsy sold right away, which is lovely and gratifying. But, as I sat here yesterday afternoon with no yarn on hand and the new skeins of yarn I ordered still in transit, I became a bit panicked. Crocheting has become a sort of lifeline for me and I absolutely had  to be making another scarf. That minute. So I grabbed the keys to my car and drove up the road a mile or so to our local yarn shop. It’s a lovely little shop located in a renovated barn. Most of the yarn is too expensive for me, but I had to have something. I ended up choosing Cascade 220 Superwash in lovely shade of blue.

Ah, that’s better.

At some point, this will be in the Etsy Shop.

Trying to hang in there.

Happy Friday.

Coping

November 4, 2015 at 8:25 am by Claudia

I’ve been so exhausted at night that I fall asleep by 10 pm at the latest and wake up around 5:30. Much of that is emotional exhaustion, but I’m sure some of it is due to the time change. Going through all of Mom and Dad’s things, sorting and making piles of photos and memories – this goes to the grandchildren, this goes to my cousin, this goes to the daughters…all of it is necessary but hard. And I’m determined to do as much as I can while I’m here.

11-4 princess pirate

Princess Pirate, complete with skull and crossbones sunglasses – part of his treat bag from school. I think he looks like a British rock star. Quite a bit of swagger, don’t you think?

That’s my furry nephew, Max, in the background. I love all my nephews.

Reading for any length of time is still difficult – it’s hard to lose myself in the pages of a book, though I long to. I have my library book with me – Career of Evil  by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) and I read about 5 or 10 pages at a time, but then, my mind wanders. And that’s not due to the book, which is excellent. And no, I’m not worried about bedbugs in my library books. I read that recently on some blog – can’t remember where. For heaven’s sake, passing along that twaddle is ridiculous. It’s not that it never happens, but that it hardly ever  happens. I remember when all sorts of articles were being written about this supposed outbreak a few years back. It has, in fact, been shown that it’s more likely to find them in furniture at the library than in books. Or furniture in a motel. Or furniture in a waiting room. Or displays in stores. And even then? Rarely. I never worry about that and I stay in a fair amount of motels and hotels and, like everyone, shop in stores. They’re simply scare tactics. And then, inevitably, they’re used to try to sell a product. Don’t let that kind of fear-inciting keep you from your local library. Books are to be checked out and used and touched and enjoyed. Libraries are there for all of us and are an essential part of our culture. They need our support.

There’s so much of that kind of fear mongering that goes on, whether it’s through pharmaceutical commercials, political campaign tactics, advertising, or irresponsible news and media coverage and it’s even more prevalent with the 24 hour news cycle and the internet. I find it very troubling and I find it even more troubling that a segment of our population automatically believes anything they’re told.

Hey, I’m tiptoeing onto my soapbox. That’s a good sign, given what the last week has been like.

11-4 obsession scarf

No, you’re not seeing things. For the first time in about two years, I’ve started an Obsession Scarf. I got this yarn last time I was down here but I didn’t do anything with it. When I was packing, I grabbed some hooks, thinking that it might provide some meditative comfort. But I didn’t get a chance to start it until yesterday. It took a little bit of time for it all to come back, but it’s like riding a bike; the rhythm and moves are still there.

I need to find a new pattern, though. I’m making two of these scarves. Maybe I’ll put them in the long-on-hiatus Etsy shop; who knows?

Don’s CD is back in stock, by the way.

I have a list of things to do today. Calls to make, financial accounts to check, the sort of things that need to be done. So, I’m off.

Happy Wednesday.

A Cup (or Two) of Joe & Some Pretty Yarn

September 23, 2013 at 9:13 am by Claudia

You know how you see some object in a store or on a blog and somewhere in your brain you register that you really like it? And then you see it over and over and you think, “Oh, well now I’m seeing it everywhere” and you (meaning me) dismiss it? That happens to me frequently. A few weeks ago I saw a photo somewhere in blogland of a mug/bottle rack filled with colorful cups and mugs. One of them was a large Anthropologie cup in a pattern that I loved – the very thing I had rejected so many times in the past.

Well, darn it! There it was back in my head again.

And I thought to myself, “There are very few things you can afford at Anthropologie, Claudia. But you can spring for a pretty cup or two.”

So, yesterday I escaped from downtown Hartford and drove to Anthropologie. I do love that store and we don’t have one near us back home. They sure know how to style and market their merchandise. It’s always a treat for the eyes.

prettycup1

Ah. Do you see why I love it? It’s oversized and holds a lot of coffee or tea. The little flower right under the  top of the handle is such a sweet touch.

prettycup2

Well, I couldn’t help it. I got one in red, too. I had to, aqua and red are the colors of this blog.

They’re for me. I can safely assure you that Don will not be interested in them.

I had some herbal tea in the red cup yesterday afternoon. And I’m drinking my morning coffee from the aqua cup. They make me smile. And they sure beat the mug I’ve been using with the words “Spring Green General Store” stamped on the side. Nothing against Spring Green. It is a lovely little town and is yet another place where I lived for several weeks while on a coaching job.

prettycup3

There are flowers at the bottom of the cup – a lovely surprise.

I’ve also been feeling the siren call of crochet. It happens every year, like clockwork, as the temperature begins to drop.

yarn

So I stopped at Joann’s. This is the incredibly soft yarn I use on some of the scarves for the Etsy shop. It’s made of silk and bamboo.

Oh, and before I forget:

skyline

That white building you see on the left is the one that is reflected in the waters of the pond on Saturday’s post. If you look closely at those photos you’ll see bits of the building rearranged and repeated, creating that incredible design. I took this photo yesterday during my walk around the park.

I temporarily halted my reading of The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny to read Michael Connelly’s newest, The Black Box. It was on the New Fiction shelves at the library. I would have been tempted to buy it, so I ended up saving some money. I’m halfway through it and have to finish it soon because I’m leaving on Saturday. (And since I saved money, I feel I can validate the cup purchase. See how that works?)

Two of my former students won Emmy’s last night and they’ve both won them before. Dear Jim Parsons won his third Emmy for The Big Bang Theory. And Abraham Higginbotham won his second Emmy for Modern Family. He is a writer and producer on that show and he was onstage during the acceptance speech. I taught Abe at Boston University when he was a young man studying acting. (He’s a good actor, by the way.) Former students, now good friends; I am thrilled for both of these great guys.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
