The Story Behind the Print & Aussie Additions

December 3, 2014 at 8:46 am by Claudia

When I posted about the new bookshelves, I mentioned the print that is on the wall and how much we love it. Trudy, a faithful reader, asked me if I’d told the picture’s story. Well, I have, but it was a while ago, so I’ll share it with you again.

bookshelves5

There it is.

Several years ago, I was at an auction with my friend Heidi. This particular auction took place once a month and it inevitably went on to the wee hours because the man who ran the auction was the slowest auctioneer I’ve ever seen. I spotted this print as it leaned against a wall on the far side of the room. I fell in love with the flowers (love flower paintings) but I really fell in love with the frame. The scalloped edges of the wooden frame were so charming and, to me, cottage-like.

There’s a thin line of green paint along the edge. (I am crazy for this frame.)

Anyway, I waited and waited for this framed beauty to come up for auction. Ten o’clock. Eleven o’clock. Midnight. Nothing. And then the auctioneer decided to call it a night.

Oh no.

Several of us shouted out about various items – what about this? what about that?

It was very late and everyone was very tired. When I mentioned the print, he said, “Is anyone else interested in it?” No one was.

I got it for $15.

A steal. The piece is large and very heavy and that frame is worth much, much more than $15. I briefly considered hanging it over the piano, but it looked much better in the den. So there it stays. When designing the placement of the bookshelves, it was always a given that the print would remain where it was. The stain on the frame also matches the stain on the little shelf in the den that holds some of my egg cups. Meant to be.

A little package from Australia arrived in the mail yesterday. I ordered four things for the dollhouse from my favorite Etsy seller Carrie Lavender. It’s funny, but while you’re waiting for a package of minis to arrive, you keep thinking of the items and where you’ll put them and they almost become real-sized in your imagination. Then the package actually arrives and it’s tiny. And the items are tiny. And you remember – oh yeah, this is for my dollhouse!

The past couple of days have been dark and dreary, so photos are tricky.

Aussie-additions 5

This lovely Aubusson pillow is a new addition to the living room. It’s in a shade of coral that is picked up in the rug.

Aussie-additions 1

Two editions of Jane Austen.

Aussie-additions 6

New French-inspired house numbers.

And, though I love everything, my favorite:

Aussie-additions 2

This “vintage” French shoe store sign. I’ve wanted it for about a year now and I finally got around to ordering it. Don’s first response? “I want one for our house!” (We love signs here at MHC. So, apparently, does Caroline.)

Thank you, Carrie!

I’ll be reviewing The Burning Room by Michael Connelly on Just Let Me Finish This Page today. Stop by!

Happy Wednesday.

Houston: We Have Bookshelves

November 30, 2014 at 9:46 am by Claudia

Before we get too far into this post, let me be clear about the bookshelves. They are very basic. The only thing more basic might be boards and cinder blocks and I’ve had a few of those in my lifetime. Nevertheless, basic or not, I love them.

I’ve wanted built-in bookshelves in the den since we moved in. I had visions of beautifully constructed built-ins along the wall behind the sofa. But because other needs/expenses almost always seem to take precedence, we’ve never been able to do it. We’ve lived here nine years. Last year, I saw a post on another blog where the thirty-something owners had put up bookshelves using standards and brackets. I was immediately taken back in my memory to a house I lived in in my mid-twenties. I remember doing that very thing, on a more modest level, in my bedroom. It seemed a bit retro – sort of mid-century modern, a style I grew up with – it was just called contemporary in those days – and not necessarily a look that I wanted to recreate in my current home.

But I kept going back to that photo and eventually came to the conclusion that it would look entirely appropriate in this den of ours.

Why not? Why not, I said to myself, do something like this NOW, rather than wait for some date in the far-off future when I might have the funds to hire a carpenter to build a fancy bookcase? I showed the blog photos to Don, and he said, “Go for it.”

Even so, I didn’t get around to it until this year. When I decided that now was indeed the time, I measured the wall space and the length of the sofa, checked for the location of the studs using my stud finder, which can be finicky, so I checked it over and over again, devised one configuration, then scrapped it and went for another. I drew up a plan.

Then I figured out the length of the shelves, based on the footprint of the sofa and the location of the studs. Left side of the sofa: 37″. Right side of the sofa: 24″ Three standards on the left. Two standards on the right. Six shelves on either side. A total of 30 brackets. Last week we went to Lowe’s and purchased everything – the pine was special grade because I was planning on staining it and didn’t want a lot of knots. One very nice guy at Lowe’s figured out how much wood we would need and another very nice guy cut all the wood for us. I crossed my fingers and hoped all my calculations were correct.

We brought everything home and earlier this week, taking advantage of a very warm day for this time of year, I sanded and stained all the shelves-to-be.

Yesterday we put them up.

bookshelves1

After sleeping through most of it, Scout decided to check out the action in the den.

bookshelves2

That drill has to be about 25 years old. I bought it when I was living in Cambridge, MA. Someday I’ll upgrade to a fancy new one, but for now, it works.

bookshelves3

I originally considered painting the wood, but I’m glad I decided to stain it instead. We have lovely pine floors and wood blinds and I felt that staining the wood would result in a warmer, cozier look. We really like it.

bookshelves4

Late in the day: shelves in place, drill, chuck, wood, measuring tape, screws, screwdriver, and level scattered around the room.

bookshelves5

Photo taken this morning, so it’s still darkish in this room. I’ve added a few books, but I’m going to let the shelves evolve. I’m not going to grab a lot of books from the upstairs bookshelves and move them down here. Both of us added a few favorite books, some signed by the authors, some vintage. My To Be Read pile moved from the desk to the shelves. I’ll eventually add some books from the shed (fingers crossed.) And let’s face it, I accumulate a lot of books, so these babies could be filled in no time.

bookshelves8

I forgot how fiddly brackets can be. They don’t always fit snugly, they sometimes move to the right or the left. And I’ve learned, especially on these shorter shelves, that things need to be balanced, not necessarily visually, but most definitely in terms of weight distribution.

This room is very small, with windows on all sides, so it’s notoriously hard to get a good photo. But here’s my best shot this morning.

bookshelves7

We never think that something like this will make the room look bigger, but, as is often the case, it does. And Don loves the way the shelves on the left and the window frame one of our favorite pieces of art. Me. too.

I’ll post more photos as I add to the shelves and one day I’ll take you on a little tour.

Total cost for everything was about $300.00. We used a prime grade of pine, bought stain and a paintbrush, screws, standards and brackets.

Oh, and one of the first things I added to the shelves?

bookshelves10

The wooden egg cup Scout and Don gave me for my birthday. Isn’t he adorable?

Happy Sunday.

Two Views and a Gift

November 6, 2014 at 8:08 am by Claudia

view of side table

Awake at 5 AM.

In the early morning lamplight – a view of the tabletop next to my blogging chair.

How do I manage to cram so much onto such a small space? You’ll see: at least two eyeglass cases; notebooks; pieces of paper with handwritten notes to myself; earbuds; coffee mug full of hot Peet’s French Roast; my iPhone; a piece of Hull pottery full of pens, pencils and a nail file; my pencil case in a piece of fifties-era pottery; the vintage lamp.

view of coffee table

And a view of the coffee table in the den: a basket full of reading material, catalogs, new television warranties, etc.; the remotes, two coffee table books, Collected (more on this book later) and Undecorate (more on this later in the post); a wooden piece that Don gave me; my Kindle, where I’m currently reading a wonderful book that I’ll review next week; a spiritual book I find inspiring; and Michael Connelly’s newest (yes I bought it) The Burning Room.

And Scout, in her tunnel position.

Will there be any room for Don’s things? No. But he tends to pile his stuff on the coffee table in the living room. So it all works out. I just have to rearrange things in the evening so that we can put our feet up on the coffee table.

The other day I picked up a package sent to me by Barbara, a lovely reader of this blog. She had written me to say she wanted to send me some miniatures. Of course, I said.

The box was heavy.

Inside? A treasure trove of wonderful gifts, most of them completely unexpected. I kept gasping as I opened each beautifully wrapped package. Let me share them with you.

barbara-gift1

Paris/Eiffel Tower Magnets, a Kelly Rae Roberts “Create” ornament, a beautiful red leather journal with a bird design, and the Old Farmer’s Almanac 2015 calendar.

barbara-gift2

A beautiful handwoven scarf and a pair of gloves. How did Barbara know that my winter gloves are in terrible shape?

barbara-gift3

A lovely bracelet, with charms representing Wellness, Prosperity, and Happiness. Perfect. I feel blessed.

barbara-gift4

Miniatures and beautiful card stock.

barbara-gift5

More miniatures. Oh, my heavens!

barbara-gift6

And a copy of Undecorate along with a beautiful card. I wrote about Undecorate on this blog a few years ago. I loved the whole concept of the book: real people living real lives whose rooms reflect their personalities. Rooms that don’t look impossibly perfect. I spent a long time in the bookstore thumbing through the pages, and though I wanted my very own copy, I never did get one. Just recently, when I was at the Strand in NYC, I saw it again and was very tempted, but I had already bought some books. So I held off. Again.

But here it is – from Barbara.

Honestly, and I’m not saying this with any sense of false modesty, I don’t know what I did to deserve this. Time and again, I am amazed and humbled by the generosity of this blog’s readers. Blown away would be an even better way to put it. I’ve been so blessed by all of you; via comments and emails and the very fact that you stop in to share some time with me, with unexpected gifts from the heart, by your loving support when I need it most.

This blog has been so much more than a daily journal. It has opened up a whole world to me that I certainly wouldn’t have known otherwise. It has brought all of you into my life. What a blessing you are.

I wrote Barbara, of course, but I want to say it here, as well. Thank you.

I told Barbara that I’m thinking of it as my first birthday present, though the actual day isn’t until two weeks from tomorrow. (And even though I received it in late October, I’m considering Teresa’s gift of the egg cup to be a birthday present, too.)  I’m going to make November my Birthday Month.

On a very sad note – if you missed my post about the death of dear Judy Clark’s husband, John, please scroll down one post. He died yesterday after a valiant and brave battle with cancer.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
