Deer, Flowers & The Girls

July 1, 2022 at 9:12 am by Claudia

To add to the loss of the tree, the deer have been particularly voracious this year. They’ve eaten the buds on countless coneflowers, every bud on my favorite day lily, and several buds on the black-eyed susans. I tend to forget to spray them with the deer repellent recipe, thinking, for some reason, that I don’t need to do it yet. That’s on me. Anyway, I mixed a batch of it the other day and sprayed everything. We’re due for rain and thunderstorms tomorrow, so I’ll make a new batch on Sunday.

It’s very depressing, but I didn’t notice it until Tuesday – the same day we lost the tree – and I was so upset about the tree that it didn’t hit me quite as hard as it would normally.

Then the Supreme Court crap. This week has – may I say it? – SUCKED.

So I’ve played with the girls every day, dressing one per day in a new outfit, trying to remain sane. It really does help! I’m almost 70 years old and I’m rediscovering dolls – who’d have thought? If I’ve learned anything over the past 5 years or so, it’s that we find peace and respite where we can.

Plus, these girls are displayed directly in front of me here in the den, so I get to see them every day. Pure pleasure.

First up on Wednesday was Madeleine (same dress but with the addition of a bow) –

Heavens, she’s lovely!

And yesterday, Pippa got a new look:

We took her hair out of the barrette.

Both girls have a little cleft in their chins. Adorable.

I think I’m going to dress Miss Imogen today.

It’s going to be very hot today – in the 90s.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Two Fawns and a Rose

June 19, 2022 at 8:28 am by Claudia

If you’d hadn’t known better, you’d have thought it was a fall day yesterday. Very, very cool and windy. A strange one day occurrence. This morning is still quite cool but it’s going to reach the 70s, unlike the 60s of yesterday. I’m going to head on out later this morning and pull the enormous amount of weeds that have popped up everywhere. It’s supposed to be sunny all day long.

This morning I heard a car honking and knowing that usually means animals are crossing the road, I looked out. There was Mom with two  fawns. I thought there was just one, but there are two. One had taken off into the woods but a few minutes later, I saw all three of them walking in the back forty. They sure seem to like hanging out on our property. Stay safe, little ones.

What else? I filled three large bags with books, then redid that particular bookcase which is in the bedroom. All three bags were unloaded at the library. That’s a very satisfying feeling. For those of you who say you could never part with your books, know that if I had more space, I’d probably hang on to all of mine as well. But we have over a thousand books here. Here, in our little cottage, which also holds lots of furniture, 7 dollhouses, and 15 musical instruments. There is only so much space. When you’re faced with that, you know something has to go. I have a lot of books I would never part with. But I read a lot and there are many books that are okay, but once I’m done, I’m done. I can easily part with them.

And what is better than donating those books to my small local library? They’re a source of badly needed income for the library. I’ve also seen some of books end up on the shelves. Pass them on to another reader.

Time to make another cup of coffee before I start in on my weeding.

Happy Sunday.

Friday: Mei, The Fawn, and The Hearings

June 17, 2022 at 9:00 am by Claudia

Mei is enjoying the glider this morning.

Mei is the creation of my friend Natalia of VegaDolls. I really love her work and was originally introduced to her dolls by my friend Susannah, who has at least 3 of them (so do I.) She might have more. Natalia has a big heart. VegaDolls is named after Natalia’s daughter, Vega, who is in a wheelchair. Both Susannah and I say that her girls are full of heart and soul.

Latest in the mom and fawn stories. Yesterday, we were in the house and, once again, I saw a deer run from the front lawn up to the corral. I wasn’t sure who it was, but soon enough, we saw the fawn coming down from the corral to the area right outside our kitchen door. She was bleating, poor thing, wondering were her mom was. Mom was over by the wood pile near the shed. Of course, I always want to go out there and guide her to her mom, but I’d only scare her. Meanwhile, Mom walked up the path into the woods while baby went up into the back forty. Honestly, I think Mom hasn’t a clue!

I’m pretty sure that they travel across the road to get to the creek, but it’s very dangerous and there are other paths to the water that are safer. But there’s nothing I can do.

Except worry, of course.

The hearings. Oh my god. I am so hyped up after they finish that I have to meditate. Yesterday’s hearing was the most powerful so far (to me.) Trump incited a mob to attack his Vice-President. Did you ever think you would read those words other than in a piece of fiction?

Can we tar and feather him before he’s thrown in prison for the rest of his sorry life?

Okay, Claudia. Take a deep breath.

I may mow a bit today. The front lawn and the lilac side of the lawn need to be taken care of.

We’re watching Borgen  on Netflix. We started it a year or so ago, but didn’t get into it. We decided to give it another look and now we’re hooked.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
