We Need a Whole Lot of Comfort Food

March 19, 2017 at 9:52 am by Claudia

Our reward for a snow-laden week:

Grandma’s Cloud Biscuits. Ummm! We haven’t had them in a long, long time. And frankly, we were too tired to deal with them earlier in the week. We’ll have some leftover for tonight’s dinner and maybe a couple for Don to take on the road.

We need a whole lot of comfort food.

Plan change: they’re running behind on Anastasia, so they won’t be having a run-through on Monday evening. I won’t be going in until Tuesday. Since they’re paying a lot for my hotel room, they’ll save a little money this way. At first, I was disappointed as we’ve worked this whole thing out so that both of us are leaving at the same time. After thinking about it a bit, I’m fine. It gives me a little time to organize after Don leaves. And, let’s face it, 6 nights in a hotel can get old quickly, so trimming it to 5 is okay by me.

And I can concentrate on helping Don get ready on this, our last day together for a while.

I can’t go there.

Fourteen Nancy Drews. Since I’m collecting volumes 1-26, I’m more than halfway there.

What did we do before we installed these shelves in the den? We’ve been here 11 years and most of that time we were shelf-less. Now, I can’t imagine life without them. When I’m sitting in my chair in the den, I constantly find my eyes drifting toward them. To yours truly, books are the best decoration. They say so much about a person, don’t you think?

If I had room, I’d build even more.

I’ve just started Jane Casey’s newest, Let the Dead Speak. I’ve reviewed some of her books and I am a big fan. We’re twitter friends and when I saw her tweeting about her book being published in Britain, I asked her when it was coming out in the States. Not until July. But then I visited Amazon and clicked on the British title and found I could get it through the Book Depository’s US branch. Whoo hoo! It arrived on Thursday and I started it last night. I’m taking it and Mo Hayder’s Birdman  along with me to NYC.

And my Kindle. Because I live in fear of not having enough to read, so I always take more than I need.

By the way, The Dry  by Jane Harper was excellent! It takes place in Australia and is beautifully written. It’s fairly new and I got it from my local library.

Have to go. There’s a lot to be done today, not the least of which is spending time with my husband.

Happy Sunday.

Catching Up

March 17, 2017 at 9:29 am by Claudia

Can I just say that Wednesday was a sucky day? It was.

It started when we bundled up to start snowblowing (Don) and shoveling snow (me). Don fired up the snowblower. It just couldn’t handle the snow (something I’ve since heard from many people as to this particular blizzard/snow.) He’d get it going and eventually the wheels would spin around and it was impossible to get it through the snow. We had almost two feet and it was very heavy.

So. What do we do now? We have a long driveway that goes uphill. Don called a couple of our neighbors and one suggested a guy who lives down the street. These neighbors were out of town and he was supposed to plow their driveway while they were gone. Price quoted was fifty dollars. We were wary of trying to clear all that snow by ourselves, so we said yes. I went upstairs to do some work. He came and went. When I looked out the bedroom window, I started cursing like a sailor. He had plowed the driveway – badly – and simply stopped. There was now a pile of snow at least five feet high blocking in our cars. I ran downstairs, went outside and asked Don what the heck happened. Apparently his truck (a small one) kept sliding around on the driveway so he really couldn’t do the job. The driveway looked terrible and there was huge pile of snow at the top of the driveway, along with the wall blocking our cars in.

So for the next three hours, Don worked the snowblower (I finally had to make him go in because I was worried about him) and I slowly cleared a five foot tall wall of snow that was about 8 feet long. I cannot tell you how exhausting it was. We took breaks, of course. But it was awful – the worst snow cleanup I can remember.

Yesterday, I had to slowly maneuver my car out of there (his ‘plowing’ effectively eliminated the area that we use to back up when we’re going to go down the driveway) so that Don could get out. It was a pain. Then it took me two tries to get back up the driveway. Meanwhile my neighbor (now back home) called out to me, apologizing about her recommendation. He’d done a bad job on their driveway, too, and there she was shoveling and shoveling and trying to dig her car out and make the driveway passable. To be fair to our neighbor with the plow, he has a small truck and I think it just couldn’t handle snow of this magnitude.

Lesson learned. We’ve had our drive plowed exactly twice since we moved here and both times it was a bust. Of course, this was an extreme event and most snowfalls are far easier to deal with.

But it’s done and salting helped with any extra snow and ice and we’re okay. Tired, but okay.

Don decided to leave on Monday and I can’t tell you how that changed my mood. I was thinking that he was going to leave today but he worked on his itinerary and route yesterday and decided Monday was the day. An enormous relief as he needs to rest before he goes and I get to have a couple more days with him before he has to leave. We’ll both be leaving on Monday – Don for the West Coast and me for some work in NYC.

After two days of no mail delivery, our mail was delivered yesterday. A ‘new’ Nancy Drew arrived, The Mystery at Lilac Inn. Isn’t this a great cover? I love the period clothes and the two shady men in the other room. There’s our Nancy, listening in as she does some sleuthing.

Speaking of Nancy Drew, I picked this up from our post office box – a gift from reader Mary:

Mary is doing some purging and she found this set of Nancy Drew postcards – all of them with different cover art. She wrote to ask if I would like them, and of course, I said yes. Thank you so much, Mary! I love them.

Now we have to get ready for our respective adventures coming up next week.

Happy Friday.

March: You’re Driving Me Crazy

March 7, 2017 at 8:16 am by Claudia

Buds on the lilac bush.

Leaves on the wild honeysuckle.

Buds on the Climbing Hydrangea.

Not to mention the daylily leaves coming out of the ground that I keep covering up with mulch. It’s cold here and this weekend the temps are going down into the teens again. Next week, a little – not much – snow. March is turning out to be very changeable, indeed. And it’s driving me crazy.

Still congested, though I think it’s due to the recent extremes in the weather. Nevertheless, it leaves me feeling like I’m still fighting off this virus. And now Don isn’t feeling well. That started yesterday. Not sure what’s going on, but I’m doing my best to take care of him because he did such a good job of taking care of me. Poor baby.

But…I have to go into the city today for a final run through of Anastasia. Thursday, the cast moves to the theater and the long tech process begins. Very exciting!

I’m reading Rules of Civility  by Amor Towles and am enjoying it very much. And obsessively following my Twitter feed as this “administration” – I use that word very loosely –  implodes before my eyes.

As Dorothy Parker said, “What fresh hell is this?”

I have to get going, my friends. Today, work. Tomorrow, rest.

Rest in Peace, Robert Osborne. You were and are irreplaceable.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
