A Big New Toy and Some Gifts

November 26, 2014 at 9:30 am by Claudia

If you subscribe to my Instagram feed, you’ve seen a photo of our new snowblower. By the way, my Instagram feed isn’t all that exciting and I’m definitely not a serial Instagrammer. I go through periods where I post a photo a day, as well as periods where I do not make an appearance. I like it, though. It’s fun. I just have to remind myself to do it.

Same thing with this blog’s Facebook page.

I try.

Anyway, back to the snowblower. Don did his research and also quizzed our neighbor about his snowblower – the same neighbor who rescued me twice last winter when I simply could not shovel all the snow by myself – and we trotted off to Lowe’s yesterday morning. About an hour later, we returned home with a shiny new Troy-Bilt snowblower.

But then we had to clean out part of the shed so we could fit it in with all of the other crap that’s stored there.

Side note: after nine years here, most of the stuff that’s stored there is clearly completely off our radar. And the mice have attacked some of it. One day we are going to rent a bin or a dumpster or whatever it’s called and fill it with all of the aforementioned crap. Then we’ll send it on its merry way.

The snowblower wasn’t cheap, which is much of the reason that we didn’t purchase one until yesterday. That, and the fact that we felt ourselves to be entirely capable of shoveling snow. And we are; however, our backs and Don’s hernia are begging for some sort of relief. I’m grateful we had a little extra money on hand this year to invest in one. We’re getting too old to deal with all the snow around here and if predictions hold true, this winter will be just as bad as last year’s. And if you believe in climate change/global warming – and I do – well…you get the picture.

It just started snowing. We’re in for at least 8 inches, maybe 12. Don is eager to try out his new toy. Go for it, Don! In the meantime, at several points in the day, I will shoveling a path for Scout. We’re also going to try to clear an area just outside the gate for her to do her business. Going up the icy hill was hard for her last year and we don’t want her slipping and sliding and hurting herself.

Winter has lost its charm for this girl, born and raised in Michigan, who has spent far too many winters in the Midwest and Northeast.

On another note, I’ve received some gifts in the mail lately. Yippee! One was from Jeannine, who was fascinated by the Random Crap tin Don gave me. (Crap seems to be a recurring theme in this post.) She wanted to contribute some fun items for the tin.

gifts 1

Candies, pastilles, mini canvasses, magnets, a fence for my dollhouse, socks…everything brought a smile to my face. In some cases, I laughed out loud. My favorite was a ceramic bathroom set – eensy-teensy style. Since there was a toilet in the set, Jeannine thought it was begging to be included in the items for the Random Crap tin.

She also sent some treasures for Don:

gifts 2

Don was tickled pink! Jeannine suggested we have a bubble blowing contest with the Hubba Bubba – we just might while away the hours on this snow day by doing just that very thing. Thank you so much, Jeannnine! You are such fun!

On Monday, another package arrived. This time, from my longtime blogging friend Linda of A La Carte. That little minx totally surprised me with these gifts for my birthday!

gifts 3

A beautiful piece of McCoy pottery and a darling egg cup with salter (the tail). Linda and I like the same things, so she knew exactly what would float my boat. I absolutely love them.

gifts 4

Also included were these darling day-of-the-week towels. Oh my goodness! I told Linda that I have to keep them away from Don, who invariably wipes his salsa/tomato sauce/whatever-ridden hands on my dishtowels.

And finally, this little gem for the dollhouse:

gifts 5

Stop. Just stop. Could anything be more adorable or more perfect for Hummingbird Cottage?

In fact, I was just thinking the other day that I needed to find some egg cups for the dollhouse. Linda found this at perhaps my favorite Etsy shop, A Lavender Dilly. Carrie Lavender creates all sorts of wonderful minis from her home in Australia. I’ve repeatedly poured over the contents of that shop and somehow never saw this, which makes the surprise all the more delightful.

Thank you, thank you, dear Linda!

Another package arrived yesterday. More on that another time.

The snow has just about covered the ground while I’ve been writing this. I’m sure I will have more snowblower adventures to share with you in the not-too-distant future.

Happy Wednesday.

Getting Out of the Way & Trusting the Outcome

November 24, 2014 at 9:27 am by Claudia

At the risk of sounding like someone who says, “When I was a child, we….” I am amazed that kids around here get the whole week of Thanksgiving off.

And here we go: When I was a child we went to school on Monday, Tuesday, and a half day on Wednesday.

Isn’t the more lengthy Christmas vacation right around the corner? Plus, we live in an area of the country where there are lots, and I mean lots, of unexpected snow days. If there are too many of them, additional days in the classroom are scheduled at the end of the school year. So why do they need this whole week off?

Ummm….probably none of my business. (Whoops. I just saw a school bus. Maybe they have school only today? I’m confused.)

Don’t get me started on our unbelievably high school taxes. That’s a post in itself.

November 18 sunset

This happened the other day. I love it when clouds are tinged with the colors of the sunset.

Time for the Getting Out of The Way Story (for lack of a better title.)

Most professional actors have an agent. That agent submits the actor for auditions, handles contract negotiations, and gets a percentage of whatever the actor earns for a job. It’s virtually impossible to find work in NYC without an agent. Don, who has been acting professionally since he was 20, has had numerous agents over the course of his career.

For the past few years he has been working with a particular agent. At first, this agent rubbed Don the wrong way. They didn’t ‘get’ each other. One day, they had a long talk which changed everything and they’ve had a fairly good professional relationship ever since.

Side note: I’ve often thought this agency wasn’t aggressive enough on Don’s behalf and I’ve said as much. And Don has felt somewhat the same way – lots of theater auditions but far fewer film auditions and Don really loves working in film and would like to have the opportunity to do more of it.

On the day that Our Town closed in New Haven, I arrive at the theater in time to share in a toast with the actors, crew, and director. After we pack up the car and are on our way home, Don says that one of the actors in the play has just mentioned to him that his agent saw the show and asked about Don’s ‘situation,’ which is agent-speak for “Is he represented by another agent and I’m interested in him.”

This particular agent runs her own respected and well-known agency. So, interest on her part is a very positive thing and Don, who is feeling a bit restless, wonders if he should set up a meeting with the agent. I vote for doing that very thing because sometimes an actor needs someone who sees him with fresh eyes.

We get home. Don checks his email, where he finds a letter from the man who owns the agency he is currently represented by. The letter says that after 40+ years of running his agency, he is retiring and closing the business at the end of the year.

What??

The owner goes on to tell the actors that they will be contacted by their individual agents with more information.

Okay. So now we’re thinking that it is extremely fortuitous that this other agent expressed interest in Don. Don writes the actor and asks for the agent’s name, etc., and asks if the actor could put in a good word for him. It’s the weekend, so Don doesn’t hear from him immediately.

Let me insert here that finding a new agent is never easy. It’s a real challenge. And when you’re an older actor, it’s even harder.

But Don isn’t panicked. He’s remarkably calm. He decides not to worry about it and trust the outcome. (That’s something we’ve been saying rather frequently around here lately.)

Don writes his agent because he’s worried about him. Will the agent be out of work? What will happen to him? He gets a lovely response from the agent saying not to panic, that Don will be taken care of, that there are plans afoot but he can’t say anything about them yet. In a follow-up email, the agent (Ron) says something hinting that he and another agent (Kym) have something in the works.

Okay.

Over the course of the next few days, while waiting to hear from his friend about the other agency, Don mulls over the whole thing and, because Don is who he is, decides that no matter what potential opportunity he has with another agency, he is going to stick with his current agent, even though the other agency looks like it could be a better and more exciting fit.

He’s loyal that way. He doesn’t know what will happen but he trusts that it will all work out for the best.

In the meantime, Don hears from his friend who has given a glowing recommendation to his agent.

Fast forward a few days. Don is upstairs copying some pages for an audition. He calls out to me, “Wait ’til you hear this!”

He comes into the den to read me an email from Kym (who I mentioned earlier.) In this email, Kym announces that she has entered into a contract with another agency, which means she’ll be bringing some actors that are represented by the soon-to-be defunct agency along with her. But only some. During the course of negotiations, she and the agency owner have gone over a list of actors and have decided who will be brought into the new agency.

Don is one of them.

The agency? The same one that Don was tempted to set up a meeting with, but decided not to out of loyalty to his old agent.

The agent who had just seen Don onstage in Our Town and expressed interest in him is the owner of the new agency.

Timing? Serendipity?

The Universe, God, a Higher Power…whatever you want to call it…moved everything into place and engineered an outcome we couldn’t have imagined. The best possible outcome for everyone’s good. (Don’s agent is taking this opportunity to retire, so the outcome for him is good as well.)

Getting out of the way. Surrendering. Knowing that only good will manifest. Trusting the outcome.

It’s sometimes almost impossible for us to trust, to let go, to know that all will be well, believe me.

But we’re getting better at it.

(Did I ever tell you the story of how I got my job at Boston University? Let me know. If I haven’t, I’ll share it with you. Another story about surrendering and trusting the outcome.)

A Birthday Recap & Bill Cosby

November 22, 2014 at 8:27 am by Claudia

Thank you for the lovely birthday wishes! Between this blog and Facebook, I was truly blessed by messages from friends near and far. Goodness!

My husband spoiled me, as usual. (I think he’s better at this sort of thing than I am.) The morning was spent on long, lovely phone calls with my sister and my best friend. Then it was off to our local tea room for tea and a sweet something.

birthdaygirl

Birthday Apple Pie with whipped cream! Yum. Yum. Yum!

We love this little tearoom which is in a very old building in a neighboring town.

birthdaygirlcupcakes

We stopped off at our local cupcake shop and picked out four cupcakes, including one of these.

Another wonderful phone call from two dear friends that I’ve known for 30+ years.

Then Don made my favorite dinner – remember me talking about those faux crab cakes? Oh, lordy, it was good! Then presents and cupcakes.

birthdaygirl and scout

Someone was very interested in that cupcake. Oh, that girl! I believe I was making a wish when Don snapped this picture.

What did I get? Not one, but two pair (or is it pairs? the rules seem to be changing) of Nick and Nora flannel pajamas. For those of you who love them, I got the sock monkey design in red, and the macarons design in pink. Hello! I’m all set for winter. At this very moment, in fact, I’m wearing the sock monkeys. I got a bottle of my favorite cologne, Amazing Grace by Philosophy. I got a sweet bracelet. And somehow, Scout found a wonderful wooden egg cup from the forties! How did she do that? She is full of surprises.

My cup runneth over.

I couldn’t have asked for a nicer day.

On another note:

Bill Cosby has been in the news a lot lately. Many women have come forward to share their stories. They don’t know each other, but each of them has an eerily similar story to tell.

If you’re sitting on the fence on this one, let me tell you that one of my former students, who continues to be a friend and who is someone I trust implicitly, had an frightening encounter with Cosby in 1994. I won’t go into the details because it’s her story to tell, but she’s a smart and savvy woman who saw his dark side and got out of his house before anything could happen. That didn’t stop him. He kept calling her house after the incident, insisting that she needed to come to his house to work on her ‘acting technique.’

And if that isn’t enough, a friend of a friend had the same thing happen to her. Both of them are actresses. Both of them dodged the bullet. But clearly, many, many women weren’t as fortunate.

It’s one thing to read about it in the news and hold back, thinking ‘Bill Cosby wouldn’t do that!” Or watch the news, as Don and I did, and think that it sure seems like these women are telling the truth and know, at the same time, that it will be impossible to prove anything.

It’s another thing entirely to know someone who saw that reality.

America’s beloved icon isn’t a nice man. Image and reality are two very different animals, aren’t they?

I leave it at that.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
