Day Fifty-Two

May 4, 2020 at 9:38 am by Claudia

Today’s flowers from Don, presented to me as he came in the door from his morning walk. He is the sweetest man in the world. (Of course, I’m biased.)

A few weeks back, Don mentioned that he was concerned about a pair of Canada Geese he’d seen down by the river on his morning walk. After several days of seeing them together, suddenly there was only one. I thought that since the goose was in the same general area, he may have been guarding his mate while she was sitting on a nest. Today he, saw this:

Five little babies, protected by Mama and Papa. Isn’t this adorable? So now we know. He was protecting the nest. That should bring a smile to your face this morning.

We worked outside yesterday – a lot – Don was out there even longer than I was. We were pretty tired and achy at the end of the day, so today is a day of rest. The temperature hit 80 degrees yesterday and it was beautiful out there. Of course, 80 is too hot for this time of year and today’s temperature will only reach 60 degrees. But it’s sunny! And gorgeous. And the porch is coming together, though I have to buy more potting soil and a couple more plants. I’ll probably do that tomorrow. I’m going to wait to plant seeds until next week. Usually, around here, we can sow them the first week of May, but it’s been so cold, I’m holding off.

Don’s been clearing a part of the property that we’ve sort of ignored over the years. He likes a project and it gives him something to do. I must say, he’s doing a good job of cleaning it up. More and more tiny leaves are appearing on the trees, more and more green surrounds us.

Very grateful for green things and buds and pretty potted flowers always, but especially at this time of year. We’re still watching Cheers every night. Situation comedy doesn’t get much better than that show and we’re really enjoying it. Last night, as we started a new episode, we realized it was the one Don was in. It’s called The Last Angry Mailman – a name I’m well familiar with as it appears on residual checks – and Don has a scene with Cliff Clavin, played by John Ratzenberger, and his mother, played by the fabulous Frances Sternhagen. I’d seen it long ago, but it was fun watching it with Don. You know I saw Don on several series, Hill Street Blues, LA Law, Cheers and more, before I met him. I specifically remember him on LA Law because he had a recurring role as an attorney and one of the most memorable episodes was one he did with the late, great Ralph Bellamy. I remember watching it. Who knew I’d end up married to the guy many years later?

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Day Forty-Five

April 27, 2020 at 9:55 am by Claudia

Cold. Rainy. Over it.

I had to bring the hanging plants in last night as the temps went down into the mid-thirties. I’ll have to do it again tonight and tomorrow night. And then – fingers crossed – it looks like we’ll be out of this unseasonably cold phase.

Please?

Hello to the Hardy Boys! I’ve just started and I can’t wait to get back to it later today. Don and I were chatting while I was working on it yesterday afternoon and I asked him about any memories of reading the Hardy Boys. He remembers loving the books and eating a lemon popsicle while reading them. Such a specific and wonderful memory! It was about the time, he thinks, that his parents were splitting up, so I’m sure they provided a wonderful escape during a tough time. Then we launched into our memories of the Hardy Boys on the Mickey Mouse Club, which was presented in 15 minute episodes and starred my childhood crushes, Tim Considine and Tommy Kirk. I loved watching it and Spin and Marty and I loved anything Annette Funicello. I thought she had the coolest job in the world!

In keeping with our daily confusion as to the day of the week, Don thought it was Friday today. And I suddenly realized that bills need to be paid. I have no sense of date or day. It’s just one long day melding into another day melding into another day.

We FaceTimed with my sister and Little Z yesterday, which was lovely. But I was alarmed that Florida is  so lax about self-isolating. Mere – who continues to work – tells me that she routinely sees people without masks on and ignoring social distance guidelines. The beaches are open and the governor, who should be leading responsibly, is a fool. Yes we live in NY and it’s been hit hard, but mark my words, the same thing will happen to those states run by governors who seem to think they are exempt from this virus or that the rules are too stringent.

Some day soon I’ll write a post about our challenges as people who work in the theater and the bleak outlook facing us. I often say we are semi-retired, but the fact is we still work, we still need to work, and we still want to work. But that may not happen for a very long time.

Bare bones, but that’s all I can do for now. Time to prune the old hydrangea blooms. Time for a lot of chores, none of which I’ve been able to do. Soon.

Some of you have shared that you’ve ordered jigsaw puzzles from Galaxy Puzzles. Wonderful news! It’s good to support small businesses during this time and I’m all for supporting women-owned businesses. And you get to do a jigsaw puzzle! Enjoy.

Okay. I have to go and write some checks. Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Day Thirty-Four

April 16, 2020 at 10:11 am by Claudia

It’s coldish today. Tonight and Saturday night it’s going to go down below freezing. For all of our hoopla about an early Spring, Mother Nature decided to show who’s boss. The month of April has been fighting Spring tooth and nail.

Somebody asked me to show the cover of Modern Nature, one of the books I received from John Sandoe Books. So here it is. Coincidentally, I just finished The Lost Pianos of Siberia, so I’m contemplating my next read – this may be it. Pictured is his garden in Dungeness, with the nuclear facility in the background.

Don took his early morning walk. I finished the book. Now we’re in our respective areas – he on the sofa in the living room, me in my chair in the den. Some of you may know that Don has been sober for – I’m trying to remember the exact number of years – around 44 years. He works his program, going to frequent meetings, sponsoring several people. He’s done this the entire time he’s been sober and he never wavers. He has helped so many people and, of course, has been helped by many. Obviously, physically going to meetings is not possible, but he’s discovered a meeting that he goes to every day at 9 am via his phone. He really likes it. So our morning routine is a bit different these days. Instead of sharing our second cup of coffee together on the sofa, I make our coffee in time for him to sip it while he’s attending the meeting. And then I come in here to write this blog and sip mine.

For someone who grew up with an alcoholic father, Don’s longtime sobriety was incredibly comforting when we first started dating. I knew he was committed to his program. Both my sister and I made the decision long ago not to drink, so it wasn’t as if Don had to deal with alcohol in the house or me ordering a drink when we were out and about. And I didn’t have to deal with it. After so many years with the fallout from my dad’s alcoholism impacting my life – well into adulthood – Don’s wisdom helped me. More importantly, he taught me to forgive. I’m so proud of Don. And I’m enormously proud of my dad, who fought his demons, and was a good and kind and loving man who helped everyone he knew. Gosh, he was a good guy.

I miss him so much.

Didn’t mean to get into all of this, but this is the way the blog often is. I get a thought and start to write about it and, suddenly, I’m off. I feel such profound love for my husband and my parents. My mom spent the last years of her life in a nursing home. I can’t imagine how worried we would be if she was still there during this pandemic. Or how worried we would be about my dad. And I know there are so many people out there with parents and loved ones who are extremely vulnerable. It’s so heartbreaking.

A reminder that during the Spanish Flu pandemic, people got tired of self-isolating and when the First World War ended, went out in huge groups to celebrate. Unfortunately, the virus was still there and many died because of their impatience to get back to normal. My grandmother lost two sisters within a week of each other; she had gone home to nurse them. Adored sisters/aunts that I never got to know. So, stay safe. Stay home no matter how frustrated you feel. Don’t listen to that man. Listen to scientists. Listen to Governor Cuomo – that’s who I’m listening to. Don and I have already discussed this; we’re sure that, even when we get the all-clear, we’ll probably stay in place for a good deal longer.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
