The Winter of Extremes

February 23, 2018 at 10:38 am by Claudia

A late start today. I was, along with millions, up late watching the Women’s Figure Skating and, unfortunately, woke up way too early this morning. BUT, I made myself get back in bed and I slept until 8:30! Hallelujah!

Then, as I was about to make my second cup of coffee and write this post, Don called via FaceTime. Another delay.

What a 24 hours! 71 degrees on Wednesday. Rain and sleet and snow on Thursday. It’s insane. Very, very strange winter weather this year. I call it The Winter of Extremes – and it’s been completely unpredictable.

And may I just say that despite the fact that February is the shortest month of the year, it seems to be moving at a snail’s pace? I keep expecting it to be the end of February and then I look at the calendar and see that it’s the 22nd or the 23rd. I’m ready for March, thank you very much.

Just thought I’d show you Don’s name on the CD for Escape to Margaritaville.

I’m chuffed.

I wrote yesterday about Don being recognized on the street and how fun it was. The reality is that’s it’s not a new thing for us. He is always being recognized for something or other, especially the amount of television work he’s done throughout his career. Some people still stop him and say they remember him on Three’s Company, and that was a long time ago. I’ve grown used to it, though it’s always a pleasure to see it happen. He was stopped on the streets of New Orleans many times. Of course, he’s rather distinctive these days with the grayish hair and beard and his over 6′ 4″ height.

But it was fun to see it happen for the first time in NYC for this Broadway show, right in front of his apartment building.

My monstera is getting a new leaf. They emerge in a tightly curled sort of appendage and then they slowly unfurl. Watching it happen is like having a front row seat for a nature documentary.

I don’t have much on the docket for today, I’m just going to hang out at the cottage and endeavor to resist sweets. I’m on a diet.

Happy Friday.

Walking in the City

February 21, 2018 at 8:00 am by Claudia

Just a quick post this morning as I have to get ready to leave for home and we’re leaving at 10. It’s been a lovely time here in the city, though Don has had – understandably – to be at the theater a lot of the time. But we catch time together when we can and for that we’re grateful.

After our late breakfast at the Diner, I took the subway to the Upper West Side and stopped in some bookstores, as well as The Sill (shocker: I didn’t buy any plants.) I just walked around for about 20 blocks, but after a while I headed back to the apartment. It’s all great, but it’s much more fun when I’m exploring with my husband. It also takes a while to get used to the pace of the city.

Almost too warm today, given that every business still has the heat on! But, I’m not really complaining.

Along the way:

A church under the – finally – blue sky.

The entrance to an apartment building. Love those doors.

Some window boxes that are ready for Spring.

Happy Wednesday.

On Tuesday (Sometimes I Just Can’t Think of a Title)

February 20, 2018 at 9:31 am by Claudia

There’s new growth on our apartment ZZ plant. And, though you can’t see it, I assure you there’s another baby coming out of the soil as well. Don had neglected to water the Chinese Evergreen, which was looking alarmingly droopy when I arrived. Some watering revived it. I have faced the fact that not only will I have to remember what plants need watering at home in the cottage, I’ll have to keep a  list for this place as well. Then a call will be placed to Mr. Broadway, in which I will tell him to water the plant while I’m on the phone.

Maybe via FaceTime, so I have proof.

Just before I took this photo, there was a cacophony of horn blowing as someone had double parked on the street which caused a traffic backup. Very NYC: If someone or something is not moving, lay on the horn.

Yesterday was a gray day and I underdressed, thinking it would feel warmer than it actually did. Nevertheless, I walked around 20 blocks to the Apple Store where I had to pick up a couple of things. I do like the convenience. At home, I have to drive for an hour to get to one. Then, of course, my bladder was alarmingly full, so I had to do the usual “Does this place have a public bathroom?” frantic search until I finally found one. That in itself is exhausting. I ran a few errands, took a few pictures, walked over 40 blocks in total and then went back to the apartment.

On my route:

Lincoln Center.

Further down the street and, coincidentally, right where I found a bathroom.

I’ve heard tales of how insanely busy the Whole Foods is at itsColumbus Circle location. I now have proof that it’s true. It’s overwhelming. And irritating. Next time, I’ll go to the one by Bryant Park. Much more civilized.

Don came home on his break and made dinner and then went back to the theater for Preview #3. We’re going to have breakfast at a local diner this morning before he heads to rehearsal. And I’m going to head to the Upper West Side because I love it there. Then home tomorrow. I’m hitching a ride with Doug.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
