Broadway Musicals, It’s COLD & Insane Tweets

March 5, 2017 at 8:53 am by Claudia

A photo of the skyline as we left the city last night. I figured I could post this since my fellow passengers are in silhouette and not identifiable.

Spent the day in the city and took notes on our second run through of Anastasia. It’s a gem. There were lots of ‘guests’ in the room; producers, people that work for the producers, designers, etc. I’ve worked on Broadway once before – also on a musical – and in both cases, I was/am aware that I am just a small piece of the whole puzzle. Broadway musicals are huge juggernauts, unlike anything else I’ve every worked on. There are at least three producers (maybe more) on this one. One of them knows me and took the time to introduce himself in Hartford, hugs me when he sees me etc. The others? They have no idea what I do, nor do they care. That’s not a criticism at all. It’s just an acknowledgement of how huge the whole thing is! There are so many elements for them to worry about, far more than when Anastasia  premiered in Hartford.

So I just do my thing, stay in contact with the actors and the writers and Darko, working quietly behind the scenes. In truth, I don’t know if I would ever want more responsibility than that! I like to maintain a quiet profile.

More from the bus.

It is friggin’ cold here today. It’s 8:30 am and the temperature is 8 degrees. I saw buds on my lilacs the other day and I’m praying they aren’t damaged. Enough with the bizarre weather! Each time we have a major change, as we’ve had more than a few times in the past couple of weeks, I get all congested again and this bug I’ve been fighting ramps up. Yesterday, as I was leaving the house, I felt sick. By the afternoon, I felt better. And so it goes.

Today I’m feeling better. I’m definitely through the worst of it and I’m very grateful I don’t have to work every day. I’ve got two days now to rest and relax and then one more run through on Tuesday. Then a break until the week of March 20th, when I stay in the city through dress rehearsals and the first four previews.

The man in the Oval Office is insane. I woke up yesterday to those tweets about “wire tapps” – his spelling, not mine, and he kept putting the words in quotes. The level of paranoia is ramping up and he’s losing it. Captain Queeg in his very own version of the Caine Mutiny. I was thinking of one of my very favorite movies, Doctor Strangelove, and how its brilliantly satiric look at the insanity of those in power doesn’t look so outrageous anymore. How can satire top what we’re witnessing now?

And yet, there are still those who believe everything he says. Ignorance is not bliss. And willful ignorance is choosing to remain uninformed, to drink the kool-aid, to blindly follow.

God gave me a brain and I’m going to use it.

Happy Sunday.

And It Continues

January 31, 2017 at 10:02 am by Claudia

Snow is falling outside my window as I write this. So far, just a sprinkle, but 1 to 3 inches is expected. A good day to stay in the house and do…I’m not sure what yet…but something. Read, certainly. I’m thinking a good cleaning of the bathroom will work off some of my ever-present anxiety.

That man fired the Acting Attorney General for standing up to him and refusing to enforce his clearly illegal executive order. Shades of Nixon and Watergate. And we know how that ended up.

I’ll restate the obvious. He needs to resign or be impeached. As I don’t see him ever resigning, for that would be admitting he was wrong and we know he is incapable of that, he must be impeached. He thinks America is his business empire. He believes he can hire and fire anyone he wants and that if he gives an order it must be followed, even if it’s immoral or illegal.

He’s getting awfully close, if not already there, to being a fascist. And he has his very own Rasputin at his side.

Okay. I don’t mean to write about this crap every day but, let’s face it, each new day brings more horrors. It’s pretty much the sum total of what’s on our mind here at the cottage. And why shouldn’t it be? I can’t think of anything more important – at least, to us – at the moment. If you’re tired of it, you can click out of this post and move on. I completely understand. However, our lives have changed since January 20th. If yours hasn’t, it just might in the not-too-distant future. I hope not, for my wish for you and for everyone is happiness and peace.

My sister has finished my pink hat and it’s on the way to me. When it arrives, I promise to have Don take a picture of me sporting my new hat.

Let’s see, what else is new? Anastasia  starts rehearsals next week. It will be lovely to see everyone again. Many of the cast members from Hartford will be in this production, including 4 out of the 5 lead actors; many of the same dancers/ensemble members, as well. But there are new additions and that will also be exciting. I can’t wait to hear that glorious music again. I won’t need to be there all of the time, of course, but I’ll be in and out of rehearsals.

Don is planning on driving out to La Jolla sometime in March. He loves nothing more than a long road trip and he’s going to get our 16 year old car  in shape for the journey. The mechanics that work on it assure him that the car can handle it. Fingers crossed! So he’ll be leaving while I’m still working on Anastasia  and then I’ll be back in Hartford in late April to work on Heartbreak House.

We are very grateful.

I long for Spring, but to be perfectly honest, my mind is so preoccupied with calling my representatives, going to meetings, taking actions, etc., that I’m less restless than usual. There’s plenty to keep me occupied. It would be nice to have a carefree sort of day, but I don’t think that’s in the cards for a while.

By the way, Linda left a comment yesterday saying that the ACLU has pocket sized versions of the Constitution available on their site – 10 for $11.99. I’m thinking of buying  some and handing them out at an appropriate time/event.

Happy Tuesday.

Back Home: Me & The Marcher

January 22, 2017 at 10:20 am by Claudia

Groggy, but back home again. The moving process is a long one. I stay in a high rise in Hartford, which means that after I finally pack everything, (and yes, I bring a lot) I have to make at least 20 trips up and down via the elevator and then to my car, which happened to be rather far out in the parking lot. Then a two hour drive home. Then, unloading the car and putting everything away. The whole thing took me most of the day. I finally finished around 5 p.m.

And since I’ve been staying up later due to the play, my sleeping hours are slightly off.

I went through most of the day with only one contact from Don via a quick text that let me know he was okay and safe. Cell service was almost non-existent; I imagine 500,000 extra citizens tweeting, using their phones to take pictures, and IGing made the coverage pretty spotty.

Finally about 4:30, I got a call. Don was back at the bus waiting to leave at 6. His knees were really feeling it! He said it was the most astounding day. He had never seen that many people – so many people that, at times, he simply couldn’t move. A sea of pink hats, of marchers as far as the eye could see. Truly powerful. He had great conversations with lots of people, figured out how to get around on the Metro, and marched and marched and marched some more.

I’m so proud of him. He’s very tired today, of course, and I will be sure to ask more questions of him, but he didn’t get home until after midnight, and he had to drive through heavy fog. I happened to be awake when he got home, so I ran downstairs to greet him.

While he was gone, I was on Twitter reading about the crowds marching all over the world, including Antarctica(!) Unbelievable and so inspiring! Everywhere. 500,000 in Washington, DC, 250,000 in Chicago, over 200,000 in NYC, and 750,000 in Los Angeles. Small towns, state capitols, north, south, east, west, in the heartland, down south – everywhere. Paris, London, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, South America, Canada, Mexico, all over Europe. EVERYWHERE. (Oops! I’m using ALL CAPS like that man’s tweets!) Let me try that again: Everywhere.

Free Speech, as granted by the Constitution. A peaceful protest, and the largest in the history of the United States.

Hartford was gearing up for its protest as I was packing up the car. The Capitol is just across the street from the apartment building. People were streaming into Hartford from all over. 10,000 of them. Side note: I got to meet the Governor of CT, Dannel Malloy, on Opening Night. I’m a big admirer, so shaking his hand was an honor. He marched on Saturday.

Today, we are attending a local meeting where we’re going to hear from a woman who ran for Congress (and lost) in November. She is a powerful presence and I look forward to learning from her.

Forgot to add: On my way home, I stopped at a rest stop. I was wearing my Nasty Women Vote T-shirt in honor of the day. As I left the bathroom and walked back to my car, a woman shouted out, “Hey Lady! I love your shirt!” As I said on Facebook: We’re everywhere.

But back to being home. It’s lovely. Hartford was lovely as well, but there’s no place like home. I’m back at my desk in the studio/office. I’m looking out at the mountains in the distance. Don’s downstairs. I had a great conversation with my always fascinating and feisty Little Z last night.

All is well.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
