Day Three Hundred Sixty-Five

March 13, 2021 at 10:18 am by Claudia

A year.

There’s not much to say about the year as I’ve been talking about it every day, all year long. I’m glad we made it through. We will continue to try to handle it with grace and cheer. At times, that’s not so easy, but most of the time it is.

Knowing that we’re all being vaccinated, or will soon be vaccinated, certainly helps.

And spring being just around the corner helps, too.

Bless you all.

Spring, Easter, egg cups. Here are a few of my wee little treasures. The one on the left, third row down, was given to me by my godparents when I was a child.

They’re all dear to me, but the vintage Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs set was gathered one by one over the course of several years. A true prize. There was a time when these cups went for hundreds of dollars each – I remember it, as they were still very pricey when I first started collecting egg cups. My friend Nels has the entire set and he paid much more than I did.

I still watch for them on eBay, mostly out of curiosity. Just the other day a Sneezy came up for auction.

And now that I’ve written this I will be, like clockwork, checking out the egg cups for sale on eBay. I don’t buy them all that often these days, but I do pick one up now and then. Vintage, of course. Figurals, which are my favorites and the reason I started collecting, are still out there but not in the range they once were. Some of my favorites, found when I first started collecting in 2002, are rarely seen these days.

I’ll share more of my babies over the next two weeks.

Sunny today but colder. We had very high winds all night long and they left me feeling edgy as the winds pounded the house outside our bedroom. More are due tomorrow. I wish they’d just stop – we’ve had a lot of high winds over the past year or so.

Just about to finish A Chelsea Concerto. I must say it’s been a riveting read but I’ll be glad to have a break from the Blitz. I think a mystery will be next; I need the change of pace.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Day Three Hundred Forty-Eight

February 24, 2021 at 10:31 am by Claudia

A little corner in the cottage – this is in the den. On the shelves: books, of course, a vintage lint brush, Scout’s paw print, and a little gem from Vintage by Crystal. Some egg cups are on their own set of shelves – most of these won’t fit in the cubbies, they’re either too tall or too wide. And a little duck family I found in a shop long ago.

It’s supposed to reach 47 degrees today. The melt will begin. I have no idea how long it will take to melt the 30 inches of snow we have on the ground, of course, but I’m ready for it to go.

We watched Supernova  last night. It’s a new movie starring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci, about a couple dealing with Alzheimer’s. We rented it on Amazon Prime. Simply beautiful. Firth and Tucci are, as always, excellent. I don’t want to give away the plot, but Don and I spent a good deal of time talking about it afterward. It is very, very powerful.

We’ve seen Nomadland, The Dig, and Supernova in the past week – all of them excellent.

A book delivery yesterday – I’ve been wanting to read Underland  for over a year. I just heard about London Fog  (nonfiction) and it’s time to start reading some vintage British mysteries in the form of Edmund Crispin. Come to think of it, I think I read one of his books long, long ago, but I don’t remember it. My TBR pile is getting taller.

Other than that, we’re tired of isolating, tired of not being able to eat at a diner, tired of not being able to go to a bookstore in person, or to wander through an antique shop. Zoom and FaceTime are invaluable, but it’s not the same as seeing someone in person, is it? I’d like to be able to smile at people I see in a store or on a street without the smile being hidden by a mask. We’re in a temporary funk and we’ll come out of it. But this winter has been long and the pandemic has been even longer.

Ah well. I’m resting my back today, so I’ll be reading. But it’s sure hard for me to stay out of trouble. I like to do things and a surprising number of those things involve my back. So I have promised Don I will be a good girl today.

I just heard that my dear colleague, the stage manager of Anastasia, lost her husband to COVID yesterday. I can’t imagine her pain. I’ve worked with her on two Broadway shows and she is the most wonderful person. My heart breaks for her. And for her daughter.

Update: We have appointments on April 9th! It’s about an hour and a half away from us, but they’re back to back appointments and it’s worth it. We’ll call it Vaccine Day!

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Day Thirty

April 12, 2020 at 9:40 am by Claudia

Happy Easter!

It’s a sunny but cold day here. I must say it’s nice to see sunshine on Easter morning. Though the forecast for tomorrow is maddening – another high wind watch all day long. What the??? Lots of rain and winds. I don’t remember a year where we’ve had so many high wind events as this year. It’s been a constant since January.

Anyway, someone came home from his walk yesterday with these:

Isn’t that sweet? He’d found them in a field beyond a house that is currently uninhabited. I made him recreate exactly what he’d done when he came in the house, so I could get a photo. Hair, courtesy of having just taken off his hat!

The forsythia was nearly finished, so it was good timing.

Bright yellow flowers seem perfect for Easter. And it’s a good thing because some critter ate my yellow daffodils. I never get many blooms; I suspect that’s because it’s quite an old plant. So it seems especially naughty to consume the two blooms that I had!

Our last egg cup:

This was a gift from a reader of the blog. It’s made from a Holland Mold and someone hand painted and glazed it with the initials L. H. in 1958. Holland Molds were popular, one could personalize the mold with paint and detail and then take the finished product home. I love this one – it’s about 4 3/4″ high, which is quite tall for an egg cup. It lives in the kitchen china cabinet.

I’m sure I’ve missed a few here and there, but that’s the bulk of the collection. I hope you’ve enjoyed this year’s tour.

Have a lovely day. I’m sure it will be hard for some of you to be away from family on this special day. Sending you all love.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
