Fog, Moonflowers & A Cutie Pie

September 17, 2018 at 10:17 am by Claudia

Another foggy morning.

I got up, did my usual opening of the blinds in the kitchen and what did I see?

The first moonflower had opened overnight! I made Don come outside to see it. It’s huge and beautiful and the scent is heavenly. I was completely surprised because I hadn’t seen a bud. Usually, the heavenly blue morning glories open up first. But this year, nothing as of today.

I have lush growth everywhere, big leaves, healthy vines, but…no flowers yet. If they don’t get a move on, I’ll be in Europe when they bloom. I’m always aware that an unexpected frost can come in October. It’s happened for the past two years. So, by the time we get home we could be looking at shriveled leaves and vines that are kaput for the season. So come on, morning glories!

Back to the moonflower. A little later, it had started to close up.

And then, a bit later:

Thank you, sweet moonflower.

The maple leaves continue to change color and fall.

Sigh. I guess summer is just about over. I refuse to fully acknowledge autumn until September 22nd. Then, I guess I’ll have to face reality.

I mowed a heck of a lot yesterday, spurred on by a forecast of rain which is now holding off until tomorrow when we’ll get a deluge. I’m sore today. Definitely taking a break, in fact, ordered to take a break by my housemate. That housemate spent all day yesterday sitting in the blazing sun, taking photo portraits of people at our local Farmer’s Market. He came home with a big old sunburn. He worked very hard.

Someone took this picture of him.

He is darn cute, that guy. So scrumptious!

Happy Monday.

Primary, Flowers & Don

September 13, 2018 at 8:55 am by Claudia

Why do I have the feeling I’ve posted this photo before? In fact, I have that same feeling about both of the pictures today. Sometimes I just don’t have new photos to share with you, so I go back in my photo library to find something current which I think I haven’t used yet. But…it’s a bit of a crap shoot. I’m pretty sure I haven’t used it, but I’m not absolutely sure, and then I say to myself, what the heck? Use it.

Anyway, the flowers down by the mailbox still look like this, so I’m putting it in the post. I love Queen Anne’s Lace and it always shows up down by the road in the late summer.

We have a primary here today for State offices; Governor, Attorney General (so important now as NY State is taking action against Trump,) Representative, etc. If you live in New York State or any other state that has a primary today, get out and VOTE!

Rick and Doug are stopping by this morning with Sam to check out what they need to know about our alarm and watering the plants when we’re away. They leave tomorrow. Sam is coming in to see our house, just in case we ever need to keep him with us for some reason. He can sniff it out and it will seem familiar to him. I love that boy.

I stopped by the place where Don was hanging out with his camera yesterday. He has a whole set-up now and he’s doing well! Anyway, we’d had a little tension that morning (yes, we’re like everyone else, we do have arguments) and I regretted being short with him. So, as I was showering, I decided I needed to stop by and apologize. Which I did.

One thing about Don that makes me fall in love with him all over again is that he is always surprised and delighted when he unexpectedly sees me. A smile lights up his face, he leaps to his feet, and embraces me. It’s no different than it was when we were first dating. I know I’m his favorite person, but in those moments, I really know I am.

How lucky am I? I already know the answer. Very.

Happy Thursday.

Flowers, Books, Ants

September 12, 2018 at 10:20 am by Claudia

A non-fading zinnia.

Nothing all that exciting to report on my end. I drove to the bookstore and got my copy of Bob Woodward’s new book. I’m going to start in on it today. I went grocery shopping. I cleaned.

I fought ants again. I swear, I have never seen so many ants over such a long period of time. Usually, I get them in the spring and then they fade away. But they have been a presence off and on all spring and summer. And now they’re back again! I’m so friggin’ sick of them. I don’t know why they are so bad this year – the crazy weather? So much rain? The last time our pest guy was here, he said they come inside when there’s too much rain because the rain destroys their ant hills. We had a lot of rain yesterday and we have more today. Sigh. I almost wish for winter just to get a break from these guys. Almost.

I  bought two hollyhocks this year. One has flowered nicely. The other? A big old dud. I saw two blooms a while back and it was if they were the miniaturized versions of a real plant. Every other bud has died. The leaves are fine. Just no flowers. Very disappointing.

Nice to know that the faux-president thinks he did a bang-up job with Hurricane Maria, which resulted in 3000 deaths, many of them due to neglect, no water, no supplies, no electricity, no nothing from the U.S. government. Or that he plans on building more Detention Camps. Or that he took money from FEMA and moved it to ICE, right in time for hurricane season.

I could go on and on. I try not to write about IT (my new pronoun for that man) very often, party because we all know what’s going on and most of us are horrified.

And my blood pressure.

But sometimes I just have to. Yesterday he arrived for the Memorial Service in Shanksville, PA pumping his fists like he was at a rally. Completely and utterly clueless, without compassion, dumb as a post, corrupt, traitorous, narcissistic, racist, bigoted, vile. I have to stop there because I keep thinking of more adjectives and at this rate, I’ll never stop.

Back to regularly scheduled programming.

A fading hydrangea. So lovely.

I think today calls for reading – alternating between a novel I’m reading and the Woodward book.  Maybe some hot chocolate later because it’s coolish out. And some deep breathing for some semblance of peace.

For those of you in the path of the storm, take cover, evacuate, whatever is necessary. Stay safe!

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
