Flowers & Etsy on a Monday Morning

February 6, 2012 at 10:02 am by Claudia

Some tulips to bring a smile to your face this Monday morning. I am determined to keep fresh flowers in the house this winter. Fresh flowers change my mood for the better and thanks to Trader Joe’s, the cost is minimal.

The hyacinths are just starting to bloom. As I leaned in, even my stuffy old nose couldn’t deny their beautiful scent.

Today is the first day where I feel like I’m coming out of the worst of the cold. Thank goodness. I need to go out and buy a postal scale today because try as I might, I can’t even estimate what shipping costs will be for the items in the Etsy shop. I’m this close to opening. The Handmade section of the shop will open this week, my friends – most likely, Wednesday or Thursday. I’ve been taking photos, cropping photos, editing listings – it’s a lot of work! Here’s the banner for the shop:

ScoutHarper is the name of our shop. Both Meredith and I will contribute our handmade creations and I will search for pretty little vintage finds.

Meredith sent me more beautifully woven shawls. Her shawls are light as air and perfect for any season of the year.

So, today I figure out shipping costs, take a few more photos, tackle more listings and very soon…we will be open. The Vintage section will open a week or so later.

I’m still loving my doily/industrial swag lamp. Silly, I know, but I think it might be one my most favorite creations ever. I love, love, love it.

Reminder: Our monthly Defending the Small House series will post tomorrow.

Have a marvelous Monday.

Crochet & Flowers

January 24, 2012 at 10:47 am by Claudia

I’ve been churning out some Obsession Scarves for the shop. Perhaps ‘churning’ isn’t the best word for the creative process. How about  ‘joyfully stitching’? I so want to get the shop up and running, but there are photos to be taken, pricing to figure out, mailing costs – oh my goodness.  As for photos – the skies have been a tad gloomy for the past two days and not the best for picture taking.

I’m suddenly aware of color – true color – lately. I want the photos to show the real colors and, frankly, that’s not always easy. For example, the pinkish tone in the to scarf is a little off, it’s a deeper color. That will be the challenge.

I’m experimenting with the opacity of the watermark on my photos. This is better.

Yarn is beautiful, isn’t it? The fibers, the softness. These variegated skeins are perfect for the Obsession Scarf.

Yarn and flowers.

Theses roses are stunning. They were part of a mixed bouquet that included the pink alstromeria – from Trader Joe’s. Mixed bouquets can be a wonderful way to spread flowers out throughout your home…a little here…a little there.

Yellow brightens up the house on a gloomy day.

I love Blogger but I’m having some doubts lately. The cancellation of Picnik, the push for everyone to join Google+, the problems with comments, blogs being taken down as spam or for some other reason – it all makes me nervous. I haven’t had any problems yet, knock on wood, but I know plenty of people who have. I’m researching WordPress. We’ll see.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments about Old Man Winter! I loved reading them. Seems like most of us have a love/hate relationship with this season. We had rain all day yesterday and our pretty snowfall has turned to mud. A depressing landscape, indeed.

Have a great Tuesday!

One of Our Favorite Places

January 21, 2012 at 9:00 am by Claudia

Yesterday, we went on a little drive.

It had snowed a little overnight. There will be a lot more on the ground today – we’re expecting 6 inches.

We crossed the Hudson River.

Truly beautiful.

We ended up at our final destination:

Pardon our excitement but we found a Trader Joe’s just a bit closer to our house (it’s still an hour away) and much easier to get to. And it’s bigger!

The thing is, Trader Joe’s has such great prices, a trip every 2 or 3 weeks is worth it. We save a lot of money. And frugal is the word for 2012.

I also can buy these pretties for a few dollars.

Fresh flowers are simply a necessity in winter. Especially when snow is in the forecast, along with shoveling.

Fresh flowers, a mug of hot chocolate and some crocheting.

That’s the ticket.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
