A New Shop and Some Finds

May 17, 2018 at 10:00 am by Claudia

I did the mundane yesterday – recycled.

And then I treated myself to a visit to a an antique shop I’d had on my radar for a while. It’s in a neighboring town, not far at all. I think I thought it was more of a hike than it was. It’s absolutely beautiful; Milne Antiques and Design. At the risk of using an overused word, it’s beautifully curated.

I’ll share some pictures of the shop tomorrow, but today I’m going to share my finds. I follow them on Instagram so I knew they carried antique and vintage English pots and I had a hankering for some.

This pair of pots is lovely, quite large, and from the 1940s. Patina like this has to be earned over time. I really love them.

And then I saw several antique garden ornaments, also from England. My eyes fastened on one which I initially thought was a duck (don’t ask me why, now it seems absurd) until the owner told me it was a dove.

A dove. Hello. I had to buy it.

I’m in love.

Then, my unexpected splurge. I saw this, fell in love with it, had no idea where I’d put it, but I couldn’t leave it there in the shop. It’s a one-of-a-kind bookshelf. Really, it’s a piece of folk art.

Ignore the plant and the pieces below the shelf, the bottom needs a bit of support, but I’m going to find something better eventually. It was clearly made for a girl. Let me show you the details.

It has the original paint and the beautiful wood shelves. And the sides have this handpainted girl in a navy nurse’s uniform, reading a book. British navy? American Navy? I’ll have to research.

Clearly, the recipient was named Martha Jane. It’s painted on the cover of the book on all four sides.

How could I pass this up? I just felt in my gut that if I didn’t buy it, I would regret it. Originally, I thought it could go behind the sofa in place of the green shelves. But when I got it home, I realized it was too tall and didn’t look right. Since space is at a premium here, I put it upstairs on the landing. I have to style it yet. I thought about putting my Nancy Drews here along with the Hardy Boys. What do you think?

It was a fun, if a wee bit costly, day.

Happy Thursday.

Grateful

May 15, 2018 at 9:18 am by Claudia

I’m sitting on the glider, having a cup of coffee. As I finished FaceTiming with Don, I thought, “Why go inside? Bring the laptop outside!” And so I did. I’m writing to you from my comfy seat on the glider.

It was very foggy this morning and now the sun is making itself known, though it’s in and out. We’re due for big thunderstorms today, perhaps serious storms. That makes me nervous, of course. I want the lilacs to hang in there until Don gets home this Sunday. I stood by the lilac bush this morning and just inhaled the scent. Oh heavens, there’s nothing like it.

I gave up trying to do something with the bed behind the kitchen. When I worked on it on Sunday, I found poison ivy everywhere and it’s a far bigger job than I had imagined it would be. Maybe we’ll hire a crew to clear it out next year. I would like to change it, to have control over the bed and not have it control us, but it will have to wait.

Consequently, I had to find places in the other garden beds for the plants I purchased for that area. Thankfully, there weren’t a lot of them. I spent the morning digging holes and plopping plants in the gardens. I’m not sure about the new hosta. It may be getting too much sun where it is – if so, I’ll have to move it. The jury is still out.

Then I mowed the corral and the back forty. And then I was exhausted, so I went inside, took a shower and took it easy for the rest of the day.

The lavender that I planted in this pot is really taking off.

And the catalpa is finally showing new growth. These leaves will eventually big huge and heart-shaped. Mother Nature is extraordinary.

While chatting with Don this morning, I started crying as I spoke about this house and this garden.  I have to remind myself occasionally that having a cottage in the (sort-of) country was a dream of mine that I didn’t think would ever come to fruition. But it did. And then, when I look around at the porch and the garden beds, I am humbled by what we (but mostly me) have managed to create in the past twelve years. The only bed that was already in existence was the big garden bed and it had two plants in it. Oh, and there was the big hosta in the bed beside the porch entrance. That’s about it. A few hostas, some sedum Autumn Joy, the peonies down by the road and the daffodils, spread here and there on the property. Everything else came in the last 12 – almost 13 – years.

The gardens aren’t manicured. They’re sort of wild and very cottage-like. They suit the cottage and the uneven, hilly property on which we live. I’m so grateful for all of it; the cottage, the porch that is the porch of my dreams, the gardens, the critters and birds who live here. It’s a lot of work, and this year I really feel it, but it’s so, so worth it.

Happy Tuesday.

Sunday

May 13, 2018 at 9:55 am by Claudia

A chilly, gray day after lots of rain yesterday. I had to turn the heat on this morning! Temps will be back to normal tomorrow and in the meantime, I’m going to try to get more work done today and tomorrow, as it looks like we have a rainy week ahead.

Don isn’t coming home for his day off for a few reasons. His longtime friend is visiting NYC and he’s having dinner with him tonight and then on Tuesday, he has an afternoon rehearsal for an event later in the week where the cast will be performing. It’s a pretty busy week for him and trying to get home for one day isn’t all that restful. I may go in, but I doubt it, as Monday is one, if not the only, dry day on the docket for the week. Grass needs to be mowed! Plants need to be planted.

Next week, he’ll be home for an extra day, so that makes up for this weekend. It’s all good.

I had a great time with Rick and Doug. They’ve had a garden designer and crew in for the last week and the changes the designer made are really thoughtful and smart. The property had been neglected for the past few years, so there was a lot of clearing out to be done. It looks lovely and will look even lovelier as some time passes. It’s such a pretty property. And they’ve discovered that they have dogwoods (gorgeous!) and crabapples and they are all blooming at the moment. Heaven!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms. And that includes moms of animals, students, nieces and nephews, grandchildren – even plants. I miss my mom and I miss being a mom. But I’m very grateful for the mom I had and will have forever and for all the dogs I have mothered, for my nieces and nephews and godchildren, and for all my former students. Mothering comes in many forms. A special Happy Mother’s Day to my sister, who is such a terrific and fiercely devoted mom to her boys (including two furry boys.)

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
