Heroes, Angels & Gratitude

May 25, 2017 at 8:48 am by Claudia

The antidote to feeling blue is doing something constructive. Around about noon, I went outside to do some weed-whacking. As I went to the porch to get what I needed, I saw this. And gasped.

There are flowers and there are flowers. All beautiful, of course, but this?

Spectacular.

One poppy had opened up and the splash of orange among the green of the garden was gorgeous.

It’s planted in the midst of the purple catmint and I love the purple/orange combination. The petals are like tissue paper.

It’s raining today – so far, a gentle rain – and I hope it stays gentle so the flower can hang in there.

After dealing with the weeds, I decided to mow the rest of the front lawn as I knew we had two days of rain ahead and the grass would be much harder to cut if I waited. The day eventually turned sunny and I was in my happy place: garden, property, porch, watering plants, sitting on the glider, sitting on the funky patio. The birdsong was everywhere and I felt a deep gratitude for this house, this property. I waited a long, long time to have a house and a garden I could call my own.

I never, never take it for granted.

Hijinks in the birdbath:

He was shaking himself and the movement caused my camera to focus on the plants rather than him, but I think you can get a sense of his happiness at getting a bath!

Emerging from the bath, ready to shake the water off.

But the most moving and life-affirming thing to happen yesterday involved my Little Z. He had his  ‘moving up’ ceremony at his school. He’s moving on to kindergarten in the fall. I told Mere to shoot some video (which she would have done anyway, of course) and send me whatever she could. I won’t speak too much of this because she should tell the story and she will.

The kids had little graduation gowns on and mortarboards and when it came time for Little Z to get up from his chair and cross the room to get his certificate, he stood up, using his canes, and started walking toward the teacher. He looked up at the crowd and proudly said “I’m walking up!” whereupon the crowd cheered and laughed and fell in love with him as everyone who meets him does. Seeing him walk with his canes, justly proud of himself, brought tears to my eyes. He is my hero. I forwarded the video to Don who watched it and also cried.

This magical child, who blesses everyone he meets, who has taught us so much – oh my, how much I love him! His mom and dad and his big brothers were there to cheer him on.

I’m sure Mere will post pictures when she has time to write a post.

Heroes can come in small packages. So can angels.

Happy Thursday.

Wildflowers

May 24, 2017 at 9:21 am by Claudia

It’s always wildflower time on this property and right now, Rocket aka Dame Rocket (sometimes referred to as wild phlox) has started blooming all over the property. Yesterday, as I drove around running errands, I could see it everywhere.

It’s really lovely and the scent is heavenly.

Fleabane is also blooming right next to the house.

The unopened flowers are pink – isn’t that neat?

I woke up feeling edgy and blue today. It’s another gray day but I don’t think that had anything to do with it. I’m trying to shake it off because I certainly don’t want to go through the entire day feeling that way.

Yesterday was a busy day with lots of errands. After I returned home, I mowed the lilac side of the lawn and the back forty. Then I potted some plants. Needless to say, at the end of the day I was very tired. I fell asleep twice while watching the television – missed the entire last segment of Rachel Maddow!

A bit more mulching today and some weed-whacking and the usual watering of the plants and seedlings. Rain is on the way for tomorrow.

I’ve been noticing that the grass in the corral isn’t growing nearly as well as it used to. Then it hit me: we don’t have a dog anymore and the dogs routinely ‘fertilized’ the corral.

Sigh. Missing my dogs and my husband.

Profoundly sad about the heartbreak of Manchester. The world we live in has become a world I do not recognize; nor do I want to.

Happy Wednesday.

Paths, Flowers, Birds, Bees

May 23, 2017 at 9:28 am by Claudia

This is a bit of what I was doing on Sunday – mulching a path to that crabapple tree that I discovered behind the house. This area is just off the back of the house and some of the kitchen windows look out on it. It’s at the bottom of a hill (coming down from the back forty) and is often waterlogged after a rain. Slowly – and I mean slowly – I’m trying to do  something with it, so it’s not just grass and wildflowers and weeds, and poison ivy – which is everywhere around here. I cleared this path a month or so ago and now I’m adding the mulch. I ran out of it, so I’ll buy some more today.

At the wooded edge of the back forty, there is a wild honeysuckle that is pink. I meant to take a picture of it a week ago and forgot, but here is a hint of that pink color. It’s so pretty.

This climbing hydrangea climbs up the left side of the shed. I planted it years ago and was aware that it might take years for blossoms to appear. Indeed, it took about 6 years. Then I started to see one or two each year. This year, there are more than I’ve ever seen, which makes me happy.

There’s more to this story. Right behind that hydrangea, robins have built a nest, I believe it’s sitting on the window sill/window box. Every time I walk near the hydrangea, which I must do if I take the trash out or go into the shed for any reason, i.e., retrieving the lawn mower, a robin barrels out from behind the hydrangea, screeching at me all the while and then proceeds to fly into the trees with a steady chirp chirp chirp of warning that doesn’t stop until I move away.

It’s becoming a bit tiresome. There is also a bumblebee that has some sort of nest there as well, and he dive-bombs me when I get too close. Between the two of them, I’m under attack! My apologies to my sweet honeybees who I originally thought were the source of the buzzing in my ear. It wasn’t you. I should have know better.

I took that photo very quickly as the robin was not happy with me and I had to get out of there.

After taking so long that I thought maybe it was no more, the clematis is steadily climbing the trellis. Can’t wait to see those gorgeous purple flowers!

And every day, I eagerly visit the poppies to see if they’ve bloomed. I haven’t checked yet today, but rest assured, you’ll be the first to know – either here or on Instagram.

I’m determined to find a hollyhock to plant and I have to buy more mulch, run to the bank, and stop at the grocery store. And do more work outside.

A busy day ahead.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
