Day Four Hundred Eleven

April 28, 2021 at 8:23 am by Claudia

Just beginning to open. The lilac bush has more flowers than ever and I’m thrilled. I can’t remember how many years ago I planted it; it’s a modest size and it’s full of buds, which, after an 80 degree day today, should be opening pretty quickly.

I bought a lot of plants at the nursery yesterday. My preferred hanging plants aren’t in yet, and I want to add some perennials to the garden beds, but I got most of the plants for the porch and secret garden pots. While I was gone, Don mowed the front lawn. I wasn’t gone all that long, but he challenged himself to get it all done while I was away and surprise me.

Needless to say, he was pretty darned tired last night.

I’ll start potting some of the flowers after I finish this post and have a second cup of coffee with Don.

I just finished The Glass Hotel. Such a satisfying read by a truly excellent writer! I think I’ll start The Paris Library  later today. We were reading a poem by J. R. R. Tolkien yesterday, the one with the line “Not all who wander are lost,” and we started talking about The Hobbit, etc. and the fact that neither of us have read anything by Tolkien. I was never all that into fantasy of the kind that he wrote. My best friend in high school was very into Tolkien and I remember her devouring the books. Anyway, this leads me to wonder if I should try reading The Hobbit. Is it one of those books that everyone should read? Am I missing out on a modern day classic? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Okay. Time to make that cup of coffee and get cracking.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Day Four Hundred Eight

April 25, 2021 at 10:08 am by Claudia

It rained overnight. It looks like a cloudy day lies ahead. Yesterday was sunny and gorgeous and we got quite a bit of work done outside. I cleared the garden beds, Don took down the old chicken wire, we raked a ton of leaves onto a tarp (several trips to the yard refuse pile) and I mowed the corral and the lilac side of the lawn. I’m slowly getting back  to outdoor-work-shape. We also taped an audition for Don. All of this before 12:30! We came back in to dine on a soup that Don had made the day before.

There’s still lots and lots to do outside, but we’re taking our time.

Looking at the low temps for tonight and tomorrow night which will be in the mid-thirties, it seems like the best day to start getting plants from the nursery will be Tuesday. After we get through Monday night, the nighttime temps should be in the forties and fifties.

There was more Christopher and Jenny watching yesterday, along with our groundhog eating the grass right outside the kitchen door when a bird called rather loudly and he panicked and ran across the yard to the shed. So cute!

I’m almost done with the puzzle. I expect to finish today. I really love this one – the colors are so beautiful together.

I hope you’re all well. I’m gathering that you’re all outside now, doing house and garden things. Enjoy!

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Day Four Hundred Five

April 22, 2021 at 9:40 am by Claudia

Another flowering tree in the Secret Garden. This was taken early in the day yesterday before the insane weather arrived. Windy, very cold, thunderstorms. Don says the wind chill was 18 degrees when he got up this morning. We’re having snow showers at the moment and tonight might bring frost.

Enough already.

Right before we went to bed, we ran outside to bring five containers of pansies in the house. The wind was so intense and it was so cold that I figured I’d rest easier knowing they were safe.

Our little Carolina wrens hadn’t been around for several days. We figured they might have opted for a different nest. But yesterday morning, I heard them calling and I saw BOTH of them! They were flying around the little trailer and at one point, they both went inside.

Were they moving in? Or were they still in the process of choosing their new home? We’re not sure, but at least one of them was back this morning, singing while standing in front of the house. He/she went inside, as well.

Heavens, I’ll be glad when I can finally get outside to finish clearing garden beds and can go to the nursery to buy plants for my pots. Next week will be much warmer, so I must be patient. I’m working on the puzzle in the meantime.

Wish us luck tonight with the freezing temps!

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
