Midweek Check-in

September 9, 2015 at 8:57 am by Claudia

Two new tires on old car. Check.

Inspection on newer car to be done today. Almost check.

Dollhouse photos submitted to British magazine. Check.

Two nights in a row of too little sleep. Check.

9-9 funkypatio

But it’s sunny and beautiful outside and the flowers are still blooming. I miss seeing birds in the birdbath. Every year about mid-August, I notice the lack of activity out there and it makes me sad. I get such pleasure from watching them frolic in the water. I feel like a mom whose kids have left the nest. Come back, little birds! (It should be the title of a play.)

9-9 roses

The Lady Elsie May roses are doing well. I cut them back severely this spring. There were so many dead canes that the whole bush needed a haircut. Now, I have to decide what to do about its neighbor – the Julia Child rose. It had leaves this year, but no rosebuds. Do I get rid of it? Or do I give it one last chance with a haircut?

9-9 journalfromtammy

I’ve been the lucky recipient of a couple of gifts lately. Tammy, one of my longtime blogging friends who lives in Kuwait, sent me this beautiful journal that she made, along with a crocheted heart. Isn’t it lovely?

Thank you, Tammy!

And Barbara sent some goodies for the Top Secret Project. DON: Stop here!

9-9 minibaseballcards

Some teeny-tiny baseball cards from L. Delaney.

9-9 miniabbeyroad

And a mini record album, complete with record – Abbey Road, of course. Barbara must have read my mind. I’m going to have a turntable in the studio, along with a record album collection. This Beatles album is the perfect start. As you know, Don is a huge Beatles fan.

The album is also by L. Delaney. I’ve ordered from her before and she has a wonderful Etsy shop.

Thank you, Barbara!

By the way, the article about the dollhouse will most likely be in the January issue. I’ll let you know more about it in a few months.

Happy Wednesday.

Sleepy Saturday

August 1, 2015 at 9:10 am by Claudia

Yesterday, I dropped Don off in a neighboring town around dinner time, where he caught a ride to the music festival with a fellow musician friend. When Don called me around 10 pm, he described a place where people were camped everywhere, where music was playing on three different stages, and where he most likely won’t get much sleep. But he’s around music and musicians and is looking forward to listening and learning and meeting new friends. It’s rather a big folk festival and it culminates with a performance from Judy Collins tomorrow evening. Both Don and I are big fans of her music and both of us have met her at different points in her career; I met her in the early seventies, Don met her more recently. She has the voice of an angel.

As always seems to be the case on the first night Don is away, it took me a long time to get to sleep last night, but I woke up at the same time I do every morning – early. So I’m a little bit sleep deprived.

8-1 butterfly bush

The butterfly bush is in bloom.

But I got up, made some coffee, let Dame Scout out, and saw the male cat race off into the woods. Ever hopeful is that boy.

And then, instead of immediately turning my laptop on, I sat here and read for a couple of hours. Ahhh. It was simply wonderful. Windows open, birds chirping, the dull sound of traffic on our road, Scoutie in the tunnel, and words making a whole new world come alive for me.

A good start to the day.

8-1 sweatbee

A tiny, tiny bee near the coneflowers.

A slow, laid-back day lies ahead, with reading, perhaps some work on the Top Secret Project (depends on my ‘tired’ level), and of course, taking care of Scout.

The other day, I stopped at the post office to check my mailbox there, something I hadn’t done in a while. There was a package waiting for me, and I thought to myself, “Ooooh! Someone sent me a present!”

And then I did a double-take. It was addressed to none other than Scout. Oh, it was sent in care of Don and me, but it was definitely for the Dame. When I told the guy behind the desk at the Post Office that is was for my dog, he laughed.

It was from a wonderful reader of this blog, Kathy.

So I brought the package home and helped Scout open it.

8-1 scout's present

Oh boy! Well, Scout simply had to sample one right away. The verdict is in, Kathy. She loves them.

Scout took it upon herself to email Kathy and thank her. I don’t know how she manages to get on my computer, but that girl has some serious skills, so I put nothing past her.

I’ll say it officially here, as well. Thank you, Kathy! Scout loves her present and she was quite taken with the fact that the box had her name on it. xoxo.

I’m off to sip some more coffee.

Happy Saturday.

Off To The Fair

June 5, 2015 at 6:00 am by Claudia

Since Don’s fitting was changed to Monday, we’re taking off early this morning for the Country Living Fair. I’ll be sure to take lots of photos for you. It can get very crowded, so I like going on a)Friday and b)early. Since I have Early Bird Admission Tickets, hurrah!

6-5 babies sunning

No telephoto lens, remember, so not at all the best quality, but the two babies were sunning themselves on the ramp to the shed yesterday and I knew you’d want to see that. That climbing plant that is hiding their entrance hole is a Climbing Hydrangea. I’ve had this plant for years and the information I read about it said it could take up to 5 years to finally bloom. Last year was the first time I saw blooms – and that was six years after I put it in the ground. There are even more this year.

6-5climbinghydrangea

This is what they look like as they start to pop.

Finally, I was the lucky recipient of another present – this time from longtime reader, Trudy.

6-5 from Trudy

Look at all that gorgeous crochet! There’s a bag, some dish cloths, a back scrubber, and that little yellow bag holds face scrubs. Trudy tells me you can put the dirty scrubs inside the bag, cinch it shut and throw them in the washer. Along with all the beautiful handwork is a bride and groom to add to my cake topper collection. This one is made by Royal Doulton. So elegant.

Thank you so much, Trudy, for such a lovely gift! I’m so impressed by your crochet and by the time and care you took in putting all of this together. You are such a sweetheart.

This is a short one, as I’m writing it on Thursday evening. I’ll have some pictures of the Fair on Saturday.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
