A Portrait

July 26, 2016 at 9:29 am by Claudia

The heat and humidity continues. Yesterday brought two big old thunderstorms, with wind and thunder and lightning and sheets of rain. We need the rain, so I’m not complaining. In fact, as is often the case, the first storm rolled in right after I had finished watering all the young plants in the Memorial Garden by hand. Of course!

As I began to water the ‘Sentimental Balloon Flower’ – I use the vintage galvanized watering can I keep on the porch – I saw something jump out from under the plant, land on my foot, and quickly scurry to the other side of the fence.

It was this little guy. He graciously allowed me to take a picture or two. In fact, he stayed there, frozen, until I finished my chores and went inside.

We haven’t seen the bunnies or Henry since right before this unbelievably hot weather began. I miss them. The birds are using the birdbath like crazy…but no bunnies. This morning, after all that rain, I had hoped to see them outside chomping on the grass, but no. Maybe they’re hanging out up in the woods where it’s cooler?

7-26 last of the hollyhocks

The hollyhocks are still blooming, but they are definitely coming to the end of their bloom time. This weather hasn’t been easy on them. I find I’m getting sad at the thought of not seeing these beautiful blooms right outside the side door.

The other day, Don called me when he was out and about and said he picked up a package that was waiting for us at the post office. We have a post office box that we generally check once a week. It was addressed to both of us. Normally, I know if something is being sent our way, but I had no idea what this package was.

It was from Shanna. Shanna is the talented artist who sent us the pencil sketch of Scout and the beautiful machine embroidery that developed from that sketch. That sketch was also miniaturized and framed and is now part of the TSP/Studio.

What was inside?

7-26 Scoutwatercolorbest

This.

A watercolor of our girl, based on a photo of Scout that was on this blog. She’s on the porch. You can see the coneflowers and hostas through the porch railing in the background.

We were stunned. If this isn’t the perfect capture of our girl, her spirit, the look in her eyes, the joy that poured out of her each and every day, then my name isn’t Claudia.

Look at her ears! And her beautiful green eyes! The tufts of hair around her ears, her nose, her tongue, her pink collar.

The twinkle. The light in her eyes.

She loved going out on the porch. She loved to watch the traffic, the cyclists who would come down our road, the birds, the squirrels.  God, I miss her.

But in the midst of the pain and sorrow we feel every day, the emptiness of a house without our girl, there is Shanna – also a dog lover – who understands our grief and sends us not one, but three different portraits of our beloved Scout. We are humbled in the face of your compassion and generosity, Shanna.

We are so, so grateful.

Writing this blog for over eight years has been an amazing experience for me. It has introduced me to hundreds and hundreds of readers – indeed, friends – from all over the world. I am reminded each and every day of the good people who are out there in our world, of the kindness and compassion and generous spirit that is the antithesis of the hatred and prejudice and fear mongering and mean-spiritedness that has erupted during this election cycle.

That’s what I cling to. That’s what I remind myself of when the world seems to be spinning out of control. That’s what gives me hope.

Thank you, Shanna.

Happy Tuesday.

Potpourri on Wednesday

June 8, 2016 at 9:30 am by Claudia

Lots to cover today!

First, thank you so much for the great discussion on yesterday’s post. It was fascinating and informative. Of course, there was the usual “You’ve lost a loyal reader” email. I respond to that sort of thing with my sincere best wishes and an acknowledgement that the reader is free to move on.

It does make me wonder, however, how anyone who has read this blog for any length of time – a daily  blog of 8+ years and one in which I think I have been transparent enough for you all to have a pretty strong picture of who I am –  could think I would ever  tolerate those ideas or that sort of speech? There is nothing anywhere in this blog that supports that kind of thinking; in fact, I have been pretty vocal about my feelings over the years. If you’re a “loyal reader,” surely this isn’t a shock?

Inclusion, not exclusion. Love, not hate. Tolerance, not intolerance. Civility, not incivility. Those issues have been covered repeatedly on this blog. And they will continue to be.

And I’ve never hidden the fact that I am a feminist and a proud one. So is my husband. We wouldn’t be together if he wasn’t. I don’t blame women for their husbands’ indiscretions and the reverse is also true. Just as I don’t blame the rape victim for the rapist’s actions. I don’t denigrate women or define them by their physical attributes. I want to see women rise to the top. We are more than fully capable. We can and will make this world a better place.

Okay. Let’s move on!

Yesterday, I continued working in what will be the memorial garden. Don had an audition in the city. Lots of digging, lots of rocks to uncover, but it felt so good to be out there working on this project. It was sunny and warm and, yes, I am happiest when I am outside working. I really love it.

6-8 yarrow1

I love self-seeders, like this yarrow that has planted itself smack-dab in front of the Chicken Wire Fence Garden. Welcome!

6-8 yarrow2

Feathery and delicate. There’s some coming up in the big garden bed, as well.

6-8 musicstand

I happened upon a listing on eBay for this music stand. It was a souvenir made for a NAME (National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts) National Houseparty that took place in Cleveland in 2011. It’s signed and dated by artist Tom Walden. It’s made out of walnut and is simply lovely.

No one bid on it but me, and I got it for $7.99! Isn’t it beautiful?

I thought it would be perfect for the Top Secret Project.

6-8 musicstandintsp

Also included was a piece of music, though I have yet to put it on the stand. I like the idea of a mix of vintage and new in this studio and the music stand looks vintage, doesn’t it?

16 days and counting.

Today marks four months since we had to say goodbye to our beloved girl. Only four months, yet it seems like a lifetime. The other day a package arrived in our post office box from Shanna, a reader of this blog. I knew she was sending what she called a ‘small token’ of appreciation, but when I opened the package, I was stunned.

Shanna is an artist and she has been experimenting with machine embroidery. This is what she created:

6-8 scoutmachineembroidery

She has perfectly captured our girl. This is simply amazing, Shanna. It’s so beautiful! I’m going to frame it and it will live in a place of honor in our home.

She also sent along the preliminary sketch she made.

6-8 scoutsketch

Don wants to frame the sketch and I think we’ll hang it by his favorite chair, so he can feel she is right by his side.

Shanna, I wrote to you yesterday and I hope you’ve had a chance to read our heartfelt words. I can’t tell you how much this means to us, especially on this day. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

You’ve captured the look in Scout’s eyes, the way she held her head, the joy in every fiber of her being. Bless you. We are so, so grateful for your generous and compassionate gift.

Don’t forget to leave a comment on Monday’s book review if you want the chance to win a copy. I pick a winner tonight.

Happy Wednesday.

On a Windy Sunday

May 15, 2016 at 8:36 am by Claudia

5-15 spirea1

The spirea bush that is down by the road is blooming. Big, fluffy tufts of white. I have always assumed this is a bridal veil spirea, but I could be wrong. I sure love it – it’s one of the early spring delights around here.

5-15 spirea2

5-15 spirea3

So pretty, so delicate. Today, that bush is being blown every which way as a cold front comes through here. The temperatures have dropped but will start to climb back up tomorrow.

I caught Henry investigating the top of the garden bed. I opened the front door and said “Hey, no garden for you.” He took off like a shot. I actually didn’t need to say a word; just opening the door is enough to send him back to his lair.

It’s so windy today that my parents’ wind chimes are constantly making beautiful sounds. Hi Mom and Dad.

5-15 albumsfromlinda

These are the albums that dear Linda sent my way. Don loves all of these artists, so they are perfect for the TSP.

Coincidentally, some albums I ordered arrived yesterday.

5-15 albums

Also in this particular group that arrived in yesterday’s mail? The exact same albums that Linda sent to me! Great minds think alike. They are from the Etsy shop, Petals and Brims. Again – all albums Don would love to have, including Earth Wind & Fire, though I must confess that they are a particular favorite of mine. I’m the big Earth Wind & Fire fan around here.

5-15 gettingthere

We’re slowly getting there.

We watched one of our favorite movies last night, The Awful Truth. It’s a very funny screwball comedy starring Cary Grant, Irene Dunne, and Ralph Bellamy (who Don worked with many years later on LA Law.) We actually own a copy of the movie, but it’s somehow more fun to watch when it just pops up on TCM. Brilliant.

You know, Don had a recurring role as attorney Russell Spitzer on LA Law and we figured out that the episode with Ralph Bellamy aired in 1988. I remember seeing it when it first aired. It’s a very touching story about Bellamy, a legendary lawyer who, it turns out, is losing his mental faculties. Russell Spitzer (Don) was defending Bellamy’s character. They had a lot of time to talk and Bellamy told great stories about his days in Hollywood.

Anyway, in 1988, I saw Don on that episode. Little did I know I would meet him six years later!

Amazing, how these things happen.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
