Was It Something In The Air?

May 22, 2019 at 9:51 am by Claudia

It was a weird day yesterday. It was sunny, but at the same time, very, very windy all day long. So windy that I got something in each of my eyes during the course of the day. Pollen, dust? I’m not sure. Little branches with new maple leaves fell to the ground. A dead limb (not big or heavy, but long) fell into the hosta bed.

I went to Lowes to get some fencing for the garden as I discovered more damage from our neighbor groundhog – who, I am convinced is really Nigel and not Joe. Nigel was more than a tad destructive last year. Henry, who is/was a saint, never went into the garden bed.

While I was at Lowes, I picked up some lightbulbs. As I picked up a pack of 40 watt bulbs to put in my cart, a lightbulb fell out of the pack and smashed on the floor at my feet. I had to stand guard as someone went to get a broom to clean it up.

Then, as I was looking for some wire garden fencing, a startled bird flew out from the shelf just over my head (and I mean within an inch of my scalp) and scared the crap out of me.

I thought I’d get some inexpensive plants, but all of the stock that I saw was in bad shape, once again reminding me why I don’t buy my plants there.

By the time I looked for a smallish galvanized garbage can to hold my potting soil, which I knew they had in stock, and found it buried high up on a shelf, making it impossible to retrieve without some sort of machinery, I threw in the towel and went home.

Some days are just like that.

But today is a new day and it’s sunny, with NO wind. I’m going to putter around outside.

We were supposed to have our sofa delivered next Wednesday, but I just got a call from our local delivery service asking if we wanted to get it even earlier – this Friday. Ummm…yes!

I can’t wait!

Now, do we just take the old loveseat to the dump or do we put it out on the street for a day to see if anyone wants it? It isn’t in the greatest shape. Decisions, decisions.

Oh, and I saw lonesome dove on the birdbath last night – the first time I’ve seen her/him this year. Lovely.

Happy Wednesday.

Chatty Friday

April 12, 2019 at 10:44 am by Claudia

Goodness, it’s gray and cloudy out there – both yesterday and today, with rain coming this evening. I started to work outside yesterday, but I was only out there for about 2 hours. I’m not used to working outdoors as I tend to be sedentary in the winter, and the air was that kind of damp that cuts right through you. But, I made a start.

We’ve been watching a groundhog who isn’t Henry. I see him on our property daily; he’ll investigate the places in which Henry and that scamp, Nigel, have resided. He’ll dine on some grass. He’s the same guy who periodically jumps up on the overturned wheelbarrow to see what’s going on. And invariably, he runs around the chicken wire fence at the back of the ‘corral’ and heads toward our neighbor’s shed. Does he live there? Does he live here? We’re not sure. But we’ve named him Joe.

My latest treasure from Vintage by Crystal arrived yesterday. Here it is:

She’s called Bedazzler. Talk about whimsical! I love everything about her; the base with the glitter, crepe paper and flowers, the egg with gold ‘grass’ inside, the little girl wearing lavender and yellow, holding a wire hoop of chicks and stars, sporting a hat with a little yellow chick.

Isn’t she the best? I’m in love with her.

On book reviews: I never answer comments on a book review post. I have to count comments in order to determine the winner, so any extra comments, like those that don’t have anything to do with the review itself, or a reply from me (which also counts as a comment) confuses the issue and makes it much more difficult to get a count. So if you have a question for me, please send it in an email. The address is under the envelope icon at the top of the sidebar. Or leave it on another post other than the book review. Then I can respond. In the future, I would appreciate you limiting your comments on these posts as they are meant to indicate whether you want to be part of the giveaway. Thanks, my friends.

Yesterday’s egg cup theme:

Wooden egg cups with faces. The man and woman on the left were sent to me by a reader of this blog. Those eggs are salt and pepper shakers. The sailor in the middle was a birthday gift from my girl, Scout. And the little girl on the right with the knitted cap was also a gift from a blog reader.

I’m surely blessed by all of you!

I’m reading another Ian Rankin mystery, Rather Be The Devil. I ended up liking my first venture into Rankin’s books very much indeed. I’m reading these out-of-order, which isn’t ideal, but for now, it’s the best I can do.

We watched The Florida Project  last night on Amazon Prime. A simply stunning movie. We were initially interested because we like Willem Dafoe and he was nominated for an Oscar for his performance. But we really had no idea what it was about. I put it right up there with Roma. It’s so real and the performances – mostly by people who had never acted before – are so honest that it seems like it’s a documentary. It’s an important film.

And Dafoe is amazing.

We couldn’t stop talking about it afterwards. I’m still thinking about it this morning.

Beverly Cleary is 103 today!

Happy Friday.

Friday Thoughts

March 29, 2019 at 10:03 am by Claudia

Can you tell I’m enamored of this combination of yellow Fiesta and yellow/orange tulips?

They were made for each other.

I pulled out my big girl camera yesterday and started shooting closeups of the flowers that are scattered around the house. A sure sign that it’s spring. I’ve been using my iPhone almost exclusively during the winter months because it was easier to grab on the fly. But now that things are blooming and/or starting to grow outside, the big girl camera will be used much more often.

It’s rainy today. Not a lot of rain, more like a very light rain. I’ve been watching all the birds gather in our back yard. Robins, at least three blue jays, little sparrows…everyone taking advantage of damp earth and more readily available food.

I saw Henry yesterday! He made it through another winter. I can always tell it’s Henry because he’s large and overweight and moves more slowly than the other groundhogs. And he was eating on the grass where he always dines. I snapped some pictures but I was using the iPhone and he was far away, so they’re too grainy. But it was our old friend Henry. I’m glad.

That Sleepy egg cup? I’m not sure where the seller is getting his information, but the price seems to be based on the prices some of the egg cups went for pre-eBay. We’re talking at least 20 years ago. In those days, they were very hard to find, so they were more desirable, and priced accordingly. I have a friend who has a vast egg cup collection and he has the entire set of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. He bought them long ago and paid a lot of money for them. He has no regrets – it’s always about the thrill of the hunt. But he never paid that much. Almost four hundred dollars? Not hardly. I’m going to send him a screenshot of the auction to get his reaction.

I’m not sure what’s on the docket for today. We did take our first trail walk yesterday and it felt really good. We stopped by the paddock where Ashley and Pliers used to live and said a few words in their memory.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
