Someone is Back

April 22, 2017 at 10:04 am by Claudia

I was chatting with Don yesterday morning andI mentioned that I hadn’t seen any sign of a groundhog this year. Had Henry passed on? He’s been around so long that could well have been the case. Later in the day, after running errands, I happened to look out the window to see a groundhog in the corral, eating grass.

I ran for the camera and stayed inside to take some photos. Groundhogs are notoriously shy and any hint of movement will send them back to their lair. As it was, I could swear he was looking right at me.

Yes, the shed needs painting and you know what? I don’t care! It is what it is. Weathered and worn.

Back to Henry. Or is it Henry II? Seems a bit smaller than Henry, but I can’t swear to that.

I can’t tell you how happy this made me! I immediately texted a photo to Don, who, about a half hour later, called me back. He was relieved, as well.

This might be my favorite photo. I’ve never seen him do that before.

Yay! Welcome back after your winter of hibernation! There’s lots of grass to dine upon. Have at it! (Just stay out of my garden, please.)

It’s been raining off and on for a few days now. It rained all night last night. We are waterlogged here. Will the sun make an appearance? Fingers crossed.

I’m just about finished with my book, but I had to break away to write this post. I haven’t been reading as much lately simply because I’m finally able to work outside and that’s my priority. This rain gives me the perfect excuse to indulge in reading and I’m grateful for it.

I snapped up this galvanized tray yesterday at Target. It was in the garden section. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it, but I like that look – within reason, of course. Too much is too much.

Anyway, here’s what I ended up doing:

I set it on top of the cake plate, which has a much smaller diameter. It provides more room for the succulents. And it contrasts nicely with the white of the table and the cake plate.

One photo was taken yesterday, one today, which accounts for the variations in the light.

I like it.

Two more days until I head into the city for the opening of Anastasia. It’s hard to believe that after all this time, it’s finally opening on Broadway. I sure wish Don could attend with me. It would make all the difference in the world. He, in fact, considered flying in to surprise me, thinking he might be able to wrangle a day off on Tuesday. But, the show is moving on stage on Tuesday and tech rehearsals are starting and he absolutely has to be there. I completely understand.

But, oh how I’d love to have him by side. Sigh.

Happy Saturday and Happy Earth Day.

Leaves, Nancy Drew & Henry

October 4, 2016 at 8:50 am by Claudia

10-4-fallday

Gosh, it was a beautiful day yesterday. The sun came out, it was warm, but not too warm, and we found ourselves outdoors for a big chunk of the day. I’m feeling much better, so we did some raking. We also took a nice long trail walk.

As to the raking, we have far too many trees that are close to the house, which means we have to rake. We leave the back forty as is. I don’t rake the garden beds because the leaves serve as mulch during the winter, protecting the plants. But the area around the house? Has to be raked. There are large and very old trees surrounding the house that drop tons of leaves. If I don’t rake them, many of them will not  decompose, and I’ll just have to rake them in the Spring. We’re not anal about it, but we do keep up with it as best we can.

The view out my office/studio window.

10-4-nancydrews

I found two more Nancy Drews with covers illustrated by Russell Tandy on eBay. They arrived yesterday. I can’t get enough of these period illustrations – the colors are so vivid, the hairstyles fabulous, the fonts swoon-worthy. I now have five in my collection and I’m going to keep looking for them. They make me happy!

Someone appeared on the shed ramp the other day:

10-4-henry

I happened to see him from the living room window, so I ran for my camera.

Dear, sweet Henry looks rather elegant, doesn’t he?

10-4-henrycloseup

He deserves a closeup. I’d love nothing more than to walk up to him and pet him, but he’s far too shy. It will never happen. I just keep telling him that I love him. And if I’m about to go outside and I see him, I’ll stay inside until he’s gone. Same with the birds in the birdbath. I don’t like to disturb them, and I want them to get a drink of water, or a bath, or some food, in peace.

Don can tell you how many times I have given him the ‘Halt’ hand gesture when we’ve been just about to go out the door. After years of living with me, he calmly accepts it and waits.

On a sad note: I’ve recently learned of the death of a fellow blogger, Pat Freymuth of Back Porch Musings. I’ve known Pat since the very beginning of my blogging days. She was gracious and talented. She had a gift for making a house a home and was an excellent photographer. Always kind and simply lovely, she had been battling illness. My sympathies to all who knew her, especially to her dearly loved family. She will be missed. Rest in Peace, Pat.

Happy Tuesday.

Hijinks

June 18, 2016 at 9:51 am by Claudia

Late afternoon animal hijinks at the cottage.

Baby bunny was munching on the grass in the memorial garden.

I have to shoot these pictures through our windows, so they are not the best quality. But oh, is this one a cutie.

I looked up and saw Henry slowly walking towards the shed and disappearing into the entrance to his home. And then about 5 minutes later, I saw a groundhog near the garden. I don’t think it was Henry because this one didn’t look quite as big, but I can’t be sure – Henry sightings have been few and far between this summer.

Hmmm….what is he thinking, I wonder?

And he’s going in.

Which prompted an opening of the front door on my part in an attempt to dissuade him from chomping on my garden. What he loves, I think, is the crown vetch that you can see everywhere in these photos. Crown vetch can be invasive and I regularly yank it when it threatens other plants in the garden.

But it also spills over the edges of the garden. So I don’t mind him eating it as long as he doesn’t decimate it – it comes back very quickly.

Nevertheless, I’m keeping my eye on him! I could see evidence that he’d been there before.

The crown vetch is in bloom at the moment and it’s quite beautiful. Remember yesterday’s post where I said I hadn’t seen very many bumblebees? Well, I did yesterday; apparently, they love these blooms.

Don is really enjoying Instagram and is taking a lot of photos, so I gave him my old Canon to play around with. Early evening found us both outside taking pictures. He has a great eye.

Essential reading from yesterday’s New York Times. Absolutely essential.

Enjoy your weekend, my friends.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
