Taking a Walk

August 25, 2017 at 9:48 am by Claudia

A couple of things before I take you along with me on the walk I took yesterday:

I am completely ignorant about Houston. Completely. I hope I didn’t come off as disparaging that city because that was not my intention. I just have to choose where and when to visit Don on his tour vs. when I have to stay home and take care of the cottage and the endless leaves that will be falling in October and November. If I learned anything on our drive across the country it was the fact that you never know what wonders are just around the corner. And I’m sure Houston has them. Another time, Houston!

My heart and prayers are with all of you who are in the path of the hurricane. I know of at least two of my readers who live in that area of Texas. I’m sure there are even more. Stay safe, evacuate if you need to. I’m sure I can speak for all the readers of this blog when I say our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I did end up taking a walk yesterday and it was lovely.

First up, this building which is the view I see from my apartment. I’ve always loved this building, the former Goodwin Hotel, that has been closed since, I think, 2008. I’ve watched it over the years, thinking how cool it would be to have an apartment there. I’ve even written about it on the blog. When I was here in January and February, I would see the occasional light in one of the rooms and, once or twice, the silhouette of a man or two. I thought I was going crazy. The hotel portion of the building, after all, was empty. There were businesses on the ground floor but nothing up above. Then I thought they might be squatters, or something like that.

This time around, I saw the same thing in a different window. But the next night, I saw more windows lit up. Hmmmm. So I walked that way the other day and found out that the hotel has been restored, reimagined, redesigned, and has now reopened as the Goodwin – a Boutique Hotel! I even went inside and talked to the desk clerk, who said they had opened in June. It’s stunningly  beautiful. It’s also a sign of the revitalization going on in Hartford.

I walked through the park to the Capitol building, which is ornate and gorgeous, as a Capitol should be. I had the honor of meeting the Governor of Connecticut – Dannel Malloy, a man I greatly admire – last year.

All inclusive. As it should be.

A view from the park. My apartment building is over there.

I loved this. And it’s so true.

My favorite apartment building in Hartford – The Linden. This is actually the back of a portion of the building. I fell in love with those balconies and the french doors leading into the apartments a few years ago. There’s a beautiful courtyard. It reminds me of something I might see in New Orleans or Charleston.

Gosh, I’d love to get inside one of those apartments!

I stopped by the library, of course, where I scanned the new fiction and saw the newest Sue Grafton (which has just been published.) So I went about getting my card renewed and checked it out. The librarian and I got to chatting and she told me she is originally from Charlottesville, which prompted a conversation about the events that transpired there. She’s going back for a visit in a couple of weeks.

The interior of the main room is being redone, partly because the University of Connecticut, or UConn, has just opened a new campus in downtown Hartford. This is great news for Hartford. There is now a section of the library for UConn students. The campus itself is just behind the library, in several buildings, the biggest of which is the former Hartford Times building.

I saw students, clearly going through some sort of orientation, everywhere. As I walked around, I kept trying to remember something I read when I was here at the beginning of the year – something that was coming to downtown Hartford because of the UConn expansion. Then I saw it – a small branch of Barnes and Noble. It had just opened the day before. It’s connected to a Starbucks and like many university bookstores that are under the umbrella of B & N, the concentration is on textbooks and sweatshirts, t-shirts, etc. But there is a smallish section of fiction and non-fiction that I was happy to see.

The Barnes & Noble is in that building on the left in the rear of the picture. There are new loft apartments upstairs. The main building can be seen at the rear – through this magnificent Alexander Calder sculpture. On the left – but barely seen in this photo – is the Wadsworth Antheneum, the beautiful museum I have shared with you in the past. On the right, just across the street, is the Main Branch of  the Hartford Public Library.

A very nice walk. I may take another one today as I don’t have to be at rehearsal until 1:30 and I’m nervous about whether the stove will arrive or not, so I’m keeping myself busy.

Update: She’s in Newburgh, just about 20 miles south of our cottage. She’ll be delivered today!

Stay safe my friends.

Happy Friday.

Busy, Busy

August 24, 2017 at 8:36 am by Claudia

I’m reduced to taking a photo of my feet propped up on the coffee table while the morning sunlight is peeking through the windows. On my iPhone because I’m too lazy to get up and retrieve my big-girl camera.

Here’s the problem in Hartford. I’ve been coming here once, sometimes twice, a year to coach for six years. I’ve explored lots of nooks and crannies in this town and it’s lovely. But I’ve been there and done that, so to speak. The days I usually reserve for ‘roaming’ are my days off and this time around, my days off are being spent back at the cottage because Don will be going away soon and Stella is coming and the yard needs to be weeded, etc. Rehearsal days, this week especially, are long and by the time rehearsal is over, I have to hightail it back to the apartment to make dinner.

And watch Rachel.

Hopefully, once we head onstage, I’ll have some free time during the day and I’ll take some walks and snap some pictures. I do love that. I haven’t been to the library yet (my favorite place) or the Capitol building or the Connecticut River. And I have to remind myself that I haven’t been here for a long stretch in anything other than winter weather for a while. I have to take advantage of blue skies and lovely August weather!

Don’s trying to track the stove but there was no update yesterday. That often happens to me when I try to track mail or a UPS package. He does need to know, however, since so many things hinge on when that stove is delivered, not the least is organizing his friends who are going to help load it onto the dolly and into the cottage. He’ll call the shipping company this morning.

In the meantime, since the Salvation Army is picking up our current stove today, he will be stove-less for several days. For Don, it’s an excuse to eat out, so he’s perfectly fine with that. Rick and Doug are currently in town for a few days and they had dinner with Don last night. The three of them had a great time and laughed themselves silly. That makes me happy.

Exciting times ahead. Don got an email from the Company Manager about housing in New Orleans, which reminds me that Don starts rehearsals in NYC on September 11th and then moves on to New Orleans (where they’ll tech the show and perform for a week) on October 8th. And then, he’s off and running until early December.

Yes, I will be in New Orleans at some point and my sister might join us there.

I will also be in Chicago. I have family and friends there and my birthday falls during the run as well as Thanksgiving, so I’ll have to figure out the best time to be there. I do have to handle things back at the house, so I’m not going to Houston. And Rick and Doug are moving here at the end of October and I’d like to be around when they first start to settle in.

Lots on the docket. But we’re grateful.

Happy Thursday.

Husband, Reading & Life

August 17, 2017 at 9:16 am by Claudia

Sometimes I grab my phone as I’m walking home and I quickly take a picture of a Hartford street because I need something  to put on a post. Let’s face it, my friends, you’ve seen Hartford many times over the past six-going-on-seven years. I had a very long day coaching yesterday and I have another one today and I’m tired, so this is what you get.

Well, not just this, but basically? This.

I thank God every day for my husband, but last night I was especially grateful. I was very tired (sinus/allergies are getting me down, along with the news) and I was about to head to the bath. We were face-timing and he was sharing a detailed story and every time he looked at me, I was yawning. Big yawns, the kind that make your eyes water. Finally, he just stared at me, features not moving, and I started giggling. Every time I would recover and look at the phone, his face was closer. This happened about six times, his features never changing, until all I could see was his eye. You probably had to be there, but I couldn’t stop laughing.

No one can make me laugh like he does and boy did I need a laugh.

He has also urged me to stop reading Twitter or watching Rachel Maddow for a few days, to give myself a mental health break. I think that’s a good idea. So far, so good – no Twitter this morning.

I haven’t been able to lose myself in the plot of a novel the way I’d like to. I’m reading The Late Show, Michael Connelly’s newest, but my attention span has been less than optimal. So I’m taking it along with me today for those periods when I have a few minutes between coaching appointments. Instead of automatically checking Twitter, I’m going to make myself read.

My newest decorating tip:

When a lamp is sitting too low on a table and it starts to annoy you, risk running into the stinky, smoky cigar shop and buy three empty cigar boxes for $5.00. Bring them back to the apartment, spray perfume all over yourself to get rid of the smoky smell, and stick them under the lamp. I have a pretty white box under the other lamp. Don, who collects these boxes, ends up the winner because he’ll get these after I get home.

I’m keeping the white box. I’ll show that to you some other time.

Don has been busy. I asked him to take the crap that we have stashed next to the shed to our local dump, aka Transfer Station. He cleared out the whole area yesterday and made several trips there and I’m so proud of him because, believe me, that’s a whole heck of a lot of work. I started doing it when he was away, but could only carry so much in my car. The CR-V is better for this type of thing. Thank you, husband!

And guess what?

The stove is ready to go. It’s being crated this week and will start it’s journey to Mockingbird Hill Cottage next week! Oh my heavens! I can barely contain myself.

Of course, we had a moment of “Gulp” when we totaled up the entire cost: Stove, crating, shipping and whatever Gino is going to charge us for hooking up the propane and trimming a bit of the cover on our baseboard heat so that we can fit the stove in.

Gulp. Gulp. Gulp. And a bit more Gulp.

It’s a big expenditure for us, but it will only appreciate in value. And we’re besotted by it, plain and simple.

Okay. Have to go get ready for another busy day.

Happy Thursday and Stay Strong.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
