As Is: Wandering the Kitchen

July 17, 2013 at 8:45 am by Claudia

Due to a reaction to the overabundance of staged home photos out there in blogland (as well as a lack of energy) I am more and more inclined to show my rooms ‘As Is.’ A healthy dose of reality never hurt anybody. Let’s wander the kitchen on this Wednesday morning.

kitchentablechairs

As usual lately, the table is covered in research, along with pottery and Riley’s Dish Garden. Don’s shoes are under the red bench. The mail is hidden on one of chair seats.

kitchenshoes

My shoes are right next to the door, under the pantry. No mudroom or entryway here. Open the door? Boom. You’re in the kitchen.

kitchenviewfromthetable

Not a fan of the black stove. But it came with the house and it works. So it stays. Not a fan of the black dishwasher, either. It doesn’t work and hasn’t for 8 years. That’s why you see dishes in the drainer. I’ll get it fixed someday. Or, maybe, I’ll just buy a white dishwasher, which is what I want anyway. Also not a fan of the huge black microwave. Again, it came with the house and it works. End of story.

kitchenstuffonchairs

My bag. I plopped it there when I returned from NYC on Sunday night. And there it sits.

kitchenbulletinboard

I don’t know if I’ve ever shown this corner. Standard refrigerator and the bulletin board, because that’s what it is really. I could give it a prettier name, but heck, it’s a bulletin board. Beautiful wooden bowl given to us by my parents. Inside that bowl is the hideous popcorn bowl that Don insists we keep. Photos of my handsome nephew David and my great-niece Emma with her brand new baby brother.

Let’s look at some photos.

I call this ‘Dogs I have loved.’ These photos are from the days when I actually had my photos developed at the neighborhood drug store. The black dog is Winston, the first dog that Don and I adopted from the shelter. We moved into our rental house and brought Winston home a week later. The golden retriever is Max, my nephew. His mom is my sister Meredith. And of course, Ms. Scout, reluctantly displaying her heart marking. Riley is represented elsewhere; he came into our lives in the era of digital cameras and iPhoto. That note is from my dad, written in his increasingly shaky handwriting, which touches my heart.

Look at these youngsters! Oh, wait, that’s Don and me. Yikes. We’re sitting on the steps of our Craftsman home in San Diego, having just bought our Christmas tree. That’s Winston nestled between us. Winston had a fearsome bark, hence the Beware of Dog sign in the window.

kitchenisland

The view from just inside the kitchen door. The lighting in the photo isn’t that great; I took it early this morning. As Is, remember?

kitchenshelf

It looks like we collect clothespins, doesn’t it? We use them to secure things that have been opened: bags of chips, bags of cookies, etc. Don’t ask me about the tile counters, which I truly detest. Someday: butcher block.

kitchencabinet

Morning sun shining on the hutch. Sort of grainy, sorry, but much of this shot was in shadow and I had to tweak it.

kitchenchalkboardjjacks

And we’re back to the kitchen door. That window on the left is double-paned, thank goodness. Because that crack you see is from an unfortunate mowing incident that took place as I mowed the grass just beyond that window and hit a rock, which flew up and cracked the window. Obviously, we have yet to get the glass replaced.

There you have it. I like ‘As Is’ shots. I also like pretty, staged shots. But this is the reality here and a good representation of our daily life as we live and work in our little cottage.

Happy Wednesday.

I’m writing this very quickly on a Sunday morning. Yesterday was a very long day. I left the house at 7:15 am and didn’t get home until 10:00 pm. Just about the same thing will happen today. And to top it all off, I keep waking up at 5:30 am, like clockwork. Sleep deprived. I had someone come by to check in on Scout yesterday, so her basic needs were taken care of. Nevertheless, by the time I got home, she was a more than a bit frantic. I hate having to put her through it all again today.

The director wants me to drive up to the theater, which is in the Berkshires, for some more work on Tuesday. The cast is moving from NYC to the theater on Monday. I know we have a bit more work to do, but I have to tell you, the thought of driving back up to the Berkshires and finding someone to check in on Scout is a tad overwhelming.

I have to drive there again next week in order to see Don’s show and bring him back home. Then we have to drive to Hartford a day later.

And when I am supposed to get time to work on the two scripts I have to start coaching in 2 weeks? They just arrived, via FedEx, on Friday.

Yikes.

It will all work out but right now I’m just plain tired.

I’m going to dash into the shower and get going.

Happy Sunday.

Surprised by Blooms

Our little, and I mean little, town is bursting with activity lately. In the short drive from my house to our version of Main Street, one encounters all sorts of delays while workers are busy doing what they do. First up is the bridge over our local river. It’s being painted a lovely shade of brick red. This has necessitated the closing of one lane of traffic, while the workers paint each half of the bridge structure. For several weeks we detoured to the right. Now that one half of the bridge is completed, we’re detouring to the left. All of this is controlled by some temporary stop lights.

Yesterday, I had just been freed from the delays at the bridge when I saw a workman holding a Slow/Stop sign. More vehicles ahead. Ah. They were trimming trees. Another delay.

I emerged from that to encounter yet another. After many years of waiting and hoping – at the very minimum the eight years we have lived here – our little main street is getting sidewalks. When I heard it might be happening earlier in the year, I said I’d believe it when I see it. Well, I’ve seen it. Finally! This is a big deal around here because walking from post office to shops to market to pizzeria has been rather treacherous in the past. Not to mention muddy and/or slippery when dealing with rain and snow. That is very exciting news indeed and the shop owners are very pleased. As am I.

So these delays, though sometimes maddening, are something I accept gladly because our little town is being beautified. And I am in awe of these workers who toil for long days in this infernal heat and humidity. That cannot be easy.

Some of the books you saw in yesterday’s post are books I will be reviewing in the future. How grateful I am to get the opportunity to learn about authors that are new to me – that I might not hear of otherwise – and then share my thoughts about them with you. Reading is all important to me, as you know, and the more I can share the joy of reading with all of you, the better. I have a couple of reviews coming up in the next 3 weeks or so.

I mowed yesterday in the sauna that is our weather, even through some rain. That ever present rain is sure making my grass grow quickly and it’s difficult to keep up with it. But I’m getting lots of good exercise as I push our lawnmower here and there. Hopefully, I’m sweating off some pounds, as well!

hostablooms5

The hostas, and I have many of them, are blooming. Each one slightly different, but all with the palest of lavender blooms. No matter how long I’ve had hostas in my garden, I’m always taken by surprise when the shoots emerge from the leaves. Oh that’s right, I think, the hostas have flowers! You’d think I’d be used to it by now.

Does that ever happen to you?

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
