A Slow Saturday

January 13, 2018 at 9:14 am by Claudia

We’re due for a yucky day today: rain which will turn into ice and a bit of snow. There are winter weather advisories up.

Can I just go back to bed?

The snow on the ground that you can see through the window is gone now, due to higher temperatures and a heck of a lot of rain yesterday. Fear not, we’re due for more mid-week. Note to self: take price tag off pot.

This is what happens when you bring your big old porch plant inside for the winter. I’ve forgotten what this is – a dracaena? an unknown grass? – but I’ve had it in this pot for several years and I bring it inside every winter. It’s become so big that I can no longer just stash it on the floor in the office. So it’s in the hallway. There are self-seeded impatiens surrounding it at the base. Hopefully, they’ll bloom at some point this winter.

The contents of the cupboard in the office. There’s some Roseville, some McCoy, an old candy box which holds letters sent to my grandmother by her adored little sister, who died in the flu epidemic of 1918. (She lost another sister as well.) Let’s see, what else? Some glove boxes, some little pieces of pottery, a mug given to me by Christy, aka Anastasia, a putz sheep and two spun cotton bunnies made by Vintage by Crystal. Oh, and some crystal bunnies and a puff made by a former blogger who does beautiful work.

I took this yesterday as I sat at the desk for a spell, due to a desire to change it up a bit. The den seems to be my home lately, but too much familiarity can breed contempt, you know? Anyway, I hung the newest Nutting up in the office – I’ll take a picture of it today – and I putzed around that space, listening to the Kenny Rankin channel on Pandora.

Happy Saturday.

The Bitter and the Sweet

April 24, 2017 at 8:15 am by Claudia

Starting to open.

I did a lot of yard work yesterday. And then, hearing that rain would be here on Tuesday and Wednesday, I mowed the entire front lawn. If I had let it go until Thursday, it would have been way too long.

At the end of that little job, I was exhausted.

My friends, Noble and Tina, stopped by yesterday to give me an Opening Night present:

A beautiful azalea to plant in my garden, along with this McCoy pot. I’m thrilled to say that I didn’t have this particular piece of McCoy. I do now! Thank you, Noble and Tina. This was presented in a box decorated by Tina with the ‘Romanov’ crest – entirely appropriate for Anastasia.

As often happens in life, this is a day of highs and lows. Anastasia is opening tonight. That’s the high.

Three years ago, on this date, my mother passed away.

I miss her every day.

The bitter and the sweet.

I’m off to get ready to catch the bus to the city. If I decide to take my laptop along, I’ll try to post tomorrow. If I don’t, you’ll see a post on Wednesday.

Happy Monday.

Leaves Gone, Book Sorting & The Glad Game

October 24, 2016 at 10:10 am by Claudia

10-24-stool

It’s a cloudy, gray morning. Here’s hoping the sun will make an appearance later in the day. This industrial stool has made an appearance in countless photos on this blog. I will often use it to stage a photo of a new piece of pottery. I suppose I love the combination of the worn wood and the bricks on the chimney.

Right now, with the move of the loveseat into the middle of the room, it’s functioning as a side table. The pottery is Russel Wright, the wood block print is vintage. I can’t remember where we found it, but we’ve had it for many years.

10-24-mccoyandbakelite

A familiar sight around these parts: McCoy pottery and bakelite.

I was sitting in the den this morning talking to Don and I noticed that one of the braces for the bookshelves was askew. After investigating, Don and I realized that the wood shelf is slightly bowed. That happens with pine, with any wood, actually. So we took the books off that shelf and rearranged things so the distribution of weight was more even.

And then I started sorting through the books. Which, after I’m finished with this post, will lead me into the bedroom, where I will continue to sort books and put aside any that I don’t need. I was wondering what I would do with the day – now I know.

Yesterday was unbelievably windy – all day long. And now the leaves are off most of the trees. It’s shocking. Yes, there are trees around here that are still in full color mode, but many are bare. In our case, our sugar maples seem to shed their leaves first, and the catalpa leaves shrivel up when we have frost of any kind, the trees surrounding the house are now bare. Sob.

I really, really, really hate to say goodbye to the leaves. The positive is that we have very little to rake at this point and we won’t need to clean out the gutters.

My feeble attempt at The Glad Game. Remember Pollyanna? I think I’m going to be on the lookout for a vintage copy of Pollyanna. I love that story.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
