Morning Glories, Cooler Weather, MiPad

September 29, 2017 at 9:45 am by Claudia

It’s a good twenty degrees cooler this morning! I didn’t get up until 7:30 and it was only 45 degrees. I think it will reach 70 today and it’s sunny, so that makes it a perfect day.

There are about twenty morning glory buds ready to pop, but unlike during the heat wave, they weren’t open when I got up. They’re opening slowly this morning.

I just took this picture. Candy-striped beauty.

Yesterday, I was fascinated by the big, fat bumblebees diving into the center of the morning glories.

It’s almost as if he’s lit by a spotlight.

They’re determined. If they can’t fly directly into the center of the flower, they climb up the fragile petal.

I raked some leaves yesterday and mowed part of the property. Don wants me to leave the back forty for him to do on Sunday. That’s fine with me. I think doing something outdoors is refreshing for him after being in a rehearsal room for 6 days in a row.

The additional MiPad floor arrived yesterday. I assembled it in about 15 minutes and then carted it upstairs to the studio/office.

It’s the lower floor – it has a huge front door. Not sure what I’m going to do with that yet, but it needs a big old handle, that’s for sure! The door section is hinged, so that you can pull it away from the house to gain access.  Yes, it looks like a coffee cup is suspended in mid-air over there to the right, but it’s really on an acrylic table.

I’m full of ideas and not so full of ideas. I’m loathe to disturb the pristine white and airy feeling of the house, but time will tell. Splashes of color everywhere, yes, but do I cover the floors? Do I put up any wallpaper? I need a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen as well as the living room. How do I fit it all in? Do I – I can’t believe I’m saying this, I’ve gone mad –  buy another floor? These are the things that are whirling around my brain this morning.

For those of you who have been asking, Don has one more week of rehearsals in NYC. The last rehearsal is on October 7th and they fly to New Orleans on October 8th. Then they’ll tech the show and preview  before opening on October 20th.  I’ve yet to make plane reservations – I’m working on that today – but I’m thinking I’ll fly down on the 19th and stay for a week. New Orleans! It will be such fun!

Happy Friday.

The Miniature Show

September 24, 2017 at 10:12 am by Claudia

I am one groggy person this morning! As often happens after a week of being sleep deprived, I slept a lot last night – which was great – but now I’m feeling very groggy. Don, who was exhausted last night after a full day of rehearsal running through everything in the show, decided to come home this morning instead of attempting the drive last night. He’s on his way now.

The miniature show was lovely. As I have no other experience with these kind of things, it seemed to be on the modest side, but it was just enough for sleepless me.

Yes, just a little over a week after I finally left Hartford, there I was – back again.

It’s sort of overwhelming when you first enter – so many tiny things to look at, so many details. So I had to walk it a few times before I could narrow things down.

Unbelievable detail.

This woman’s work was exquisite. Can I tell you how much I wanted those blue cupboards? Oh my goodness. Miniatures handmade with this level of detail and quality are expensive. At least $300, and even more depending on how large the piece is. But if you’re a collector and you’ve got the money, it’s worth it. The piece on the left has a bread board that pulls out. Be still my heart.

This woman makes lovely animals. The border collies drew me, of course. She told me that if I sent her some pictures of Scout, she could make a mini Scout for me. I just may do that.

This chair was gorgeous. I don’t know what kind of wood it is, but it’s stunning. This was in D. Thomas Fine’s booth – that’s Darryl, who does the monthly Squint Box. It was a pleasure to meet him! We took a picture together but I don’t like the way I look in it, so you won’t be seeing it here. We had a nice chat, with Darryl telling the lady who was assisting him that I was one of the first supporters of Squint Box. He’s a nice guy. He’s moving his shop closer to my neck of the woods – still a drive – which makes me happy.

This is Patrizia Santi, who lives in Italy. She makes beautiful minis. She is really well known for her shoes and purses, which are exquisite. I’ve long been a fan and though I hadn’t planned on it, when I saw she was actually there, I knew I had to buy a pair of her shoes because I might not get another chance.

Here they are:

Unbelievable. She makes every style but I loved these rather outrageous wedge heels with the pattern.

Here they are in the dollhouse. The level of detail is amazing. I don’t know how she does it.

I also bought two framed pictures from her. They suit Hummingbird Cottage.

When I saw that Michael Yurkovic of Atomic Miniatures was there, I got very excited, as he does mid-century modern pieces and I’m a fan. It seemed timely, given that my new MiPad has just arrived.

His work is amazingly detailed and perfectly done. Miniature Eames pieces, like the shelves and the rocker – they are truly incredible.

He made this mini Airstream. I cannot tell you how much I love that linoleum!

Anyway, I had a long talk with him and he let me look at his pieces and hold them in my hand and I decided I wanted a coffee table of some sort. He had three of them there, all different. I was tempted to get the boomerang table, but I settled on a ‘surfboard table’ because I loved the wood grain and the length.

This is an investment piece. His pieces are pricey. But they are beautifully made and I figure I’ll balance the whole thing out with recycled pieces, as I did on my first dollhouse.

Each of his tables has a built-in vase. It’s beautifully made. I also bought one of his signature ashtrays. It’s signed and numbered. I mean, how could I resist?

Here it is with the sofa and chair. Oh my goodness!

I felt a wave of guilt over my mini buys this week, including another floor of the MiPad, along with these designer pieces. I’m frugal. But I’ll get over it and I know that, in the end, I will have such fun creating another mini dwelling. They’re worth it.

It was a lovely day but I was tired and happy to get home.

Sadly, I arrived home to a message from my sister that they had to say goodbye to their beloved dog, Max, yesterday morning. We knew he was declining. He was 13, which is an amazing age for a golden retriever. I well know how hard this is. I adored Max. Everyone who met him adored him. He was such a wonderful boy and I will miss him. Rest in Peace, beautiful, beautiful boy. Aunt Claudia loves you always.

Happy Sunday.

The Itch for Miniatures is Back

September 22, 2017 at 9:54 am by Claudia

I’m slowly…slowly…getting the itch to play with miniatures again. For several months, gosh, it may be a year, I haven’t been able to drum up even a little excitement. I tend to be that way. I’ll be really into something like quilting or crochet and then I’ll tire of it. Same with minis, I guess!

Anyway, the other day I turned my dollhouse around so I could see the inside and sort of fell in love again. I’ve been given some miniatures by lovely readers/friends during the past few months and I’m slowly adding them to Hummingbird Cottage.

The beautiful black wooden tray was a gift from Barbara. It’s now holding mail on the table in the entry.

Nancy Drews, from Barbara, are on the bedside table, waiting to be read.

A Maxfield Parrish is hanging in the den. (From Barbara)

And brightly colored Fiesta-like bowls (from Victoria) are on the kitchen counter.

One thing that has ramped up my excitement about miniatures came in the mail yesterday. I don’t know if you remember this, but I wrote about these dollhouses a while back. They’re made by Elaine Shaw, who lives in London. They’re called MiPads; four different floors in a very modern style that can be used in any combination. They’re pricey for yours truly, so I held off. Elaine and I had a little correspondence going and a while back she wrote to say that she was going to take one final order for the MiPads because they were getting more expensive to make and ship. I thought: This is my last chance to get one! So I ordered one floor.

Here it is. (Not the best time of day to take a photograph and I had to resort to the landing under the skylight.)

This is floor number two. It comes in pieces but it’s so well designed that I put it all together in about twenty minutes. Those are acrylic sliding windows at the front. The design allows one to take it apart easily and put it back together again just as easily.

It’s really big – bigger than I had realized. It’s 24 inches wide, 20 inches deep.

I love these stairs.

I love that the MiPads are modern, yet a blank canvas. There are so many possibilities. I’m inspired to buy some more modern furniture and have at it! At the same time, I’m not limited to any one design style.

I put some of my furniture in there to show scale.

Whoo hoo! I’m excited! So much so that I wrote Elaine and asked her if she had any floors available that, for some reason, didn’t sell. She does. So I’m going to add one more floor. Now, where to put this??? That’s always the question here at the cottage. Where in the heck do I put it?

I’m also heartened to hear that Elaine has decided to continue making the MiPads. She is redesigning the next batch and they’ll be a bit smaller. I’m glad I’m in on the original design.

Tomorrow I’m going to a miniature show run by the IGMA – the guild of miniature artisans. It’s right outside Hartford. I’ve never been to a miniature show so I’m really looking forward to it.

Don was surprised and delighted by the biscuits and cookies. He shared some of the cookies with his fellow cast mates and they got a rave, so I’m happy.

He comes home tomorrow night for his day off.

Forgot to add this – last night’s glorious sunset:

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
