More at the Art Institute, Family & Margaritaville

November 20, 2017 at 8:00 am by Claudia

The other day, I stopped by the Art Institute to see the Paperweights and The Thorne Rooms. I used to collect glass paperweights many moons ago and this collection is stunning. Simply stunning.

Always a collector: I started contemplating the potential expansion of my collection.

I’m going to share some of the Thorne Rooms with you. The level of detail is astounding. Everything is made by hand.

Each room not only has the main room box, but there are always scenes outside windows and through doorways. Extraordinary.

Love this Art Deco room.

See what I mean about rooms through doorways?

I could go on and on. If you’ve never seen them and you find yourself in Chicago, please do yourself a favor and visit the Art Institute.

I also made a quick trip to see this, one of my favorite paintings.

Nighthawks  by Edward Hopper. I don’t know of another painting that is, to me, so evocative, so mesmerizing.

Frustrated by the lack of WiFi, I wrote to one of the managers and he said I could use the communal WiFi in the ‘lounge’ upstairs.

Lucky me, because I can write this post and schedule it for Monday, and I got to see this view from the 28th floor:

Not too shabby.

Don and the cast of Escape to Margaritaville performed yesterday in the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival parade. What actually happened was that they waited for a bus to pick them up between shows and the bus was late because there were traffic jams everywhere. When they finally got on the bus, they went to the site, accompanied by a police escort. They rehearsed for about five minutes instead of the fifteen that had been planned and then they pre-taped their segment just in the nick of time. It was cold out there!

Next Monday, they record the cast album! That, my friends, is very, very exciting.

And my niece, Elizabeth and her husband Steve, along with two of their three children, (the eldest is away at school; my old stomping grounds, Boston University) went to see the show yesterday and they had the best time! I was so touched that they came. I ran over there at the end of the show and took them backstage so they could see Don before he was whisked away on that bus.

My cousin and her husband are coming all the way from Michigan to see the show on the 29th!

Yay for the Hill family! I love them all so much.

I’m going to grab this chance to respond to your comments and schedule Tuesday’s post – just in case this problem continues.

Funny, how dependent I’ve become on a WiFi signal!

Happy Monday.

Morning Glories, Cooler Weather, MiPad

September 29, 2017 at 9:45 am by Claudia

It’s a good twenty degrees cooler this morning! I didn’t get up until 7:30 and it was only 45 degrees. I think it will reach 70 today and it’s sunny, so that makes it a perfect day.

There are about twenty morning glory buds ready to pop, but unlike during the heat wave, they weren’t open when I got up. They’re opening slowly this morning.

I just took this picture. Candy-striped beauty.

Yesterday, I was fascinated by the big, fat bumblebees diving into the center of the morning glories.

It’s almost as if he’s lit by a spotlight.

They’re determined. If they can’t fly directly into the center of the flower, they climb up the fragile petal.

I raked some leaves yesterday and mowed part of the property. Don wants me to leave the back forty for him to do on Sunday. That’s fine with me. I think doing something outdoors is refreshing for him after being in a rehearsal room for 6 days in a row.

The additional MiPad floor arrived yesterday. I assembled it in about 15 minutes and then carted it upstairs to the studio/office.

It’s the lower floor – it has a huge front door. Not sure what I’m going to do with that yet, but it needs a big old handle, that’s for sure! The door section is hinged, so that you can pull it away from the house to gain access.  Yes, it looks like a coffee cup is suspended in mid-air over there to the right, but it’s really on an acrylic table.

I’m full of ideas and not so full of ideas. I’m loathe to disturb the pristine white and airy feeling of the house, but time will tell. Splashes of color everywhere, yes, but do I cover the floors? Do I put up any wallpaper? I need a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen as well as the living room. How do I fit it all in? Do I – I can’t believe I’m saying this, I’ve gone mad –  buy another floor? These are the things that are whirling around my brain this morning.

For those of you who have been asking, Don has one more week of rehearsals in NYC. The last rehearsal is on October 7th and they fly to New Orleans on October 8th. Then they’ll tech the show and preview  before opening on October 20th.  I’ve yet to make plane reservations – I’m working on that today – but I’m thinking I’ll fly down on the 19th and stay for a week. New Orleans! It will be such fun!

Happy Friday.

The Miniature Show

September 24, 2017 at 10:12 am by Claudia

I am one groggy person this morning! As often happens after a week of being sleep deprived, I slept a lot last night – which was great – but now I’m feeling very groggy. Don, who was exhausted last night after a full day of rehearsal running through everything in the show, decided to come home this morning instead of attempting the drive last night. He’s on his way now.

The miniature show was lovely. As I have no other experience with these kind of things, it seemed to be on the modest side, but it was just enough for sleepless me.

Yes, just a little over a week after I finally left Hartford, there I was – back again.

It’s sort of overwhelming when you first enter – so many tiny things to look at, so many details. So I had to walk it a few times before I could narrow things down.

Unbelievable detail.

This woman’s work was exquisite. Can I tell you how much I wanted those blue cupboards? Oh my goodness. Miniatures handmade with this level of detail and quality are expensive. At least $300, and even more depending on how large the piece is. But if you’re a collector and you’ve got the money, it’s worth it. The piece on the left has a bread board that pulls out. Be still my heart.

This woman makes lovely animals. The border collies drew me, of course. She told me that if I sent her some pictures of Scout, she could make a mini Scout for me. I just may do that.

This chair was gorgeous. I don’t know what kind of wood it is, but it’s stunning. This was in D. Thomas Fine’s booth – that’s Darryl, who does the monthly Squint Box. It was a pleasure to meet him! We took a picture together but I don’t like the way I look in it, so you won’t be seeing it here. We had a nice chat, with Darryl telling the lady who was assisting him that I was one of the first supporters of Squint Box. He’s a nice guy. He’s moving his shop closer to my neck of the woods – still a drive – which makes me happy.

This is Patrizia Santi, who lives in Italy. She makes beautiful minis. She is really well known for her shoes and purses, which are exquisite. I’ve long been a fan and though I hadn’t planned on it, when I saw she was actually there, I knew I had to buy a pair of her shoes because I might not get another chance.

Here they are:

Unbelievable. She makes every style but I loved these rather outrageous wedge heels with the pattern.

Here they are in the dollhouse. The level of detail is amazing. I don’t know how she does it.

I also bought two framed pictures from her. They suit Hummingbird Cottage.

When I saw that Michael Yurkovic of Atomic Miniatures was there, I got very excited, as he does mid-century modern pieces and I’m a fan. It seemed timely, given that my new MiPad has just arrived.

His work is amazingly detailed and perfectly done. Miniature Eames pieces, like the shelves and the rocker – they are truly incredible.

He made this mini Airstream. I cannot tell you how much I love that linoleum!

Anyway, I had a long talk with him and he let me look at his pieces and hold them in my hand and I decided I wanted a coffee table of some sort. He had three of them there, all different. I was tempted to get the boomerang table, but I settled on a ‘surfboard table’ because I loved the wood grain and the length.

This is an investment piece. His pieces are pricey. But they are beautifully made and I figure I’ll balance the whole thing out with recycled pieces, as I did on my first dollhouse.

Each of his tables has a built-in vase. It’s beautifully made. I also bought one of his signature ashtrays. It’s signed and numbered. I mean, how could I resist?

Here it is with the sofa and chair. Oh my goodness!

I felt a wave of guilt over my mini buys this week, including another floor of the MiPad, along with these designer pieces. I’m frugal. But I’ll get over it and I know that, in the end, I will have such fun creating another mini dwelling. They’re worth it.

It was a lovely day but I was tired and happy to get home.

Sadly, I arrived home to a message from my sister that they had to say goodbye to their beloved dog, Max, yesterday morning. We knew he was declining. He was 13, which is an amazing age for a golden retriever. I well know how hard this is. I adored Max. Everyone who met him adored him. He was such a wonderful boy and I will miss him. Rest in Peace, beautiful, beautiful boy. Aunt Claudia loves you always.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
