Random on Monday

July 30, 2018 at 8:22 am by Claudia

Random photos today, as I was too tired from mowing yesterday to do much of anything else. The grass was about 7 inches long in some places and it was still damp from all the rain. More today. As of tomorrow, we’re getting rain every day again.

The robin perched on this pole for the longest time. I don’t usually see that with robins.

Needs no explanation.

I’ve showed you Hickory Moth Tussock caterpillars before, but this one, along with about 50 more, was on some of the older milkweed the other day. They were fascinating to watch. I looked it up and found out that it’s a Milkweed Tussock Moth. In one night, they annihilated three leaves on a milkweed plant that had fallen due to a broken stem. Apparently, these moths and Monarch butterflies share the same coloring due to something in the milkweed plant. I can’t remember what it is at the moment.

We’ve seen the Hickory Tussock Moths coming down from the trees, rather like spiders, or rock climbers. They repel down. They appear suspended in midair, but they’re actually descending to the ground.

Calibrachoa blooming on the porch.

In the garden.

I am not one for animated movies as a rule. I was the kid who didn’t really like cartoons. But I’d heard great things about Disney’s Coco, so we watched it last night. Have you seen it? It’s simply wonderful! We were completely entranced and want to watch it again. It takes place in Mexico and centers around the Day of the Dead. Great plot, incredible animation – a truly beautiful movie with a powerful message. It’s on Netflix.

More mowing, some weeding, and some pruning are on the docket for today.

Happy Monday.

Rain, Movies & Dollhouses

July 23, 2018 at 7:53 am by Claudia

The meadowsweet flowers are turning brown. Equally striking, I think. Especially when the sun is hitting them, as it was when I took this picture.

Feast or famine. After a long stretch without any rain, we’ve got 4 days of it on the docket and, as I write this, it’s teeming down. The hydrangeas have been pummeled.

But…I must not complain. We need it.

We had brunch at Rick and Doug’s yesterday and had a lovely time – as we always do. They’ve fenced in a big part of the yard for Sam and we got to see him run like the wind, chasing a ball. Sam is so happy with his new space! He was especially glad to see Don, who has been absent from our brunches for a while.

Don and I watched Chocolat  last night via Netflix. For some silly reason, we’d never seen it. What a wonderful and magical movie! Completely enchanting. Beautiful performances by all, especially Juliette Binoche and Judi Dench.

Don goes into the city today to work with Louis Mendes. I’m going to help Rick do some plant shopping.

I haven’t done anything with the rescued dollhouse yet, but I’ve been eyeing it when I’m upstairs in the office. I’ve been saving some exterior ideas that I’ve come across on the web. I just have to make a decision. Plus, I have to figure out how to replace those parts of the house that are missing. It’s the Arthur dollhouse by Greenleaf. Greenleaf no longer provides replacement parts (drat!) and if I buy an entire kit, even a used one on eBay, then I end up with a lot of excess parts that I don’t need and don’t have room to store. So, I’m currently stalled as I try to figure out what to do. When I do start in, I’ll share it with you. I’m going to use the rainy days ahead to do more research.

Happy Monday.

Movies, Spider Webs & Mowing

July 19, 2018 at 9:16 am by Claudia

We watched a great old movie last night, All the King’s Men; the original 1949 version with Broderick Crawford, based on the novel by Robert Penn Warren. For some reason, we’d never seen it before. Filmed in black and white and gritty – almost film noir – it’s a powerful statement about politics and corruption. In fact, I kept looking at Don throughout the movie as things were happening that were all too similar to what we are seeing in Washington. The narrator says something towards the end about Willie Stark, the corrupt politician. I’m paraphrasing: Willie knew that you could say anything over and over again and people would believe it.

Sound familiar?

If you watch it, watch this version. There’s a recent remake with Sean Penn, but it can’t hold a candle to the original. Crawford is great. He won the Oscar for his performance. It’s currently available on TCM On Demand.

I saw this when I opened the front door yesterday morning. It’s all in the light, isn’t it? Later that day, I couldn’t see it at all.

Amazingly detailed work.

This coleus is starting to grow spikes with little purple flowers.

I have become a coleus fan. There are so many variations and they’re all beautiful.

Nothing beats Mother Nature for sheer beauty.

We’re going to do some photo shooting on location today. That sounds awfully official, but it just means that we’re going into the next town to take some pictures. And then I’m going to start in on mowing. Yesterday I caught up with weed whacking. Mowing and weed whacking have been on hold because of the heat and humidity and rain. It’s beginning to look a little tidier around here.

It’s a gorgeous day today.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
