Blooming & Painting

May 27, 2021 at 9:30 am by Claudia

The clematis is blooming and I see buds on the peonies, although they’re aren’t many this year. The truth is, I tend to leave the peonies alone and probably shouldn’t. One of them needs to be moved as it is now in the shade because of the tree that grown in the middle of the bush. I just somehow never get around to it come autumn.

We had thunderstorms yesterday evening and we’ll have more rain tomorrow, but today is lovely. Don swears he saw tiny beaks in the robin’s nest yesterday so I’m going to quietly and carefully investigate. I suspect the wrens have babies, too, but I haven’t heard any cheeps. One of them is in and out of the entrance hole, carrying worms. I was telling Don that once these babies have fledged, I’ll really miss the wrens. Their song has been a constant and I’ve loved watching them. I won’t missed being harassed by the robins, however!

From yesterday:

Just playing with paint. Clearly, I like clouds.

I’m working on a study of the Secret Garden. I don’t have the skill set for minute detail, so it will definitely be my “interpretation” of that space. Wish me luck – I’ll need it.

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

Gardening and Painting

May 20, 2021 at 9:28 am by Claudia

A busy day yesterday: I weed whacked and then, as so often happens, I got sucked into something else, in this case, pruning. The wild roses (aka brambles) are all over the place. If every plant grew as fast as the brambles, we’d be in spectacular shape around here. So, I got out the pruners. Then I watered the seeds in the chicken wire fence garden. There are already tiny zinnias emerging, as well as a few morning glories. I’ve found it helps when I put down a layer of topsoil, which I did this year. I didn’t do it last year because of lockdown.

Other than my usual impatiens, lavender, hanging plants, and geraniums – all in pots – I only added one perennial this year, a clematis. I put it in the bed under living room window. That bed gets a lot of sun. So far, it seems to be doing well.

Then I painted.

Taking a cue from some oil painting enthusiasts that I follow, I decided to do some small studies. And by small, I mean, about 3 x 5 inches. I used a sheet of Arches oil painting paper and cut it into smaller sizes. The idea is to play, have fun, try new things. Since I’m new to this, everything  is a new thing. I felt the pressure I had put on myself evaporate. There is no right or wrong.

Here are the two mini paintings:

The one on the left is just something I came up with, it’s not based on a photo or another painting.

The one on the right is my interpretation of a photo I took last week as a storm came in over the mountains. I was on the porch and this huge, dark cloud was over our neighbors’ house. I might tweak this one a bit more today. I have to remind myself that they are studies and an experiment. I’m going to play some more later today.

In the meantime, Don and I are discussing buying a used car. We haven’t used the CR-V in nearly a year. Why? The muffler is hanging by a thread. The CR-V is 21 years old and the bottom is rusted. The door on the drivers side doesn’t open consistently, and the anti-lock mechanism does some weird thing that makes it impossible to start the car without going through about seven steps and even that isn’t always successful. We love the CR-V and it’s served us well; 3 trips across the country, countless adventures, reliable transport for the dogs and recycling. But it’s tired.

Can we really afford a new car? We have to. Don needs to be ready to drive to NYC, to shooting locations, etc. We need something that is more of an SUV, because my low-slung (too low!) Honda Accord has a nice trunk, but since my dad went with a sporty coupe in his late 80s, it has an impossible back seat area. No one could sit back there comfortably unless they were under 10 years old. I can transport certain items like groceries and bags of mulch, but anything larger is impossible.

Anyway, we’d rather buy something used that has the stamp of approval of Don’s mechanic and he’s got a few cars on the lot that we’re going to see later this morning.

We’ll see. But we are increasingly aware that it’s time, especially since work is about to start again.

And we need to work!

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

Painting, Masks, & The Letter T

May 19, 2021 at 9:36 am by Claudia

The gorgeous weather continues. It’s going to get warmer, into the eighties, which is a bit too warm for my taste. We’ll be putting in the bedroom window a/c unit later today because that upstairs bedroom gets warm at night.

In case you ever see a missing letter “t” on this blog it’s because my keyboard T is hardly working, which means I’ll have to visit the Apple store soon. It’s annoying, to put it mildly. It gets a bit better as the computer warms up, but I almost always have to hit it 3 times before it works. (Now, after typing this post, it’s working well. Go figure.)

A frustrating painting session yesterday. Nothing seemed to be working, I couldn’t mix the colors I wanted, I didn’t like the way it looked. So, my second attempt was not a happy experience. Don, as always, brought me back to reality and reminded me that I’ve barely started this journey. It’s all about learning. I do watch some teaching videos and they help me with the basics. I just have to go for it and experiment and see what works and what doesn’t. I was feeling sorry for myself, but thankfully, that is over. I’m going to do a couple of small studies today on paper. Start small.

I watered everything yesterday; grass seed, morning glory and zinnia seeds, all the potted plants on and off the porch. I have gently urged Don to water the grass seed today…we’ll see if he remembers.

I’m really enjoying my reread of Nine Coaches Waiting  by Mary Stewart. I haven’t read it in many years. Such a wonderful sophisticated romantic mystery by the Queen of that genre. I read a chunk of it every night before I go to sleep. What would I have done without Mary Stewart in my teens? I specifically remember a car trip with my parents to visit old friends who lived in New Jersey. I fell asleep while reading The Ivy Tree  and my mom removed the open book from my hands when she came in to check on me.

Gov. Cuomo has gone along with the recommendations of the CDC as of today, although individual stores can set their own policies. Oblong Books, for example, is requiring masks until sometime in June, partly to ensure the safety of staff members who haven’t been fully vaccinated yet, as well as for children and the immunocompromised. Don’s going to the grocery store this morning, so we’ll see if they still require them. No masks for those who are fully vaccinated, but you know that those who refuse to be vaccinated will also not wear masks, and there’s no way to check on that unless you require those who are fully vaccinated to show their card upon entering the store. Anyway, both Don and I have decided we will continue to wear masks indoors (in a public setting.) I was talking to our next-door neighbor the other day and they are also continuing to wear masks indoors – and each of them had COVID early, in February/March of 2020.

I don’t love it, but I surely don’t mind wearing a mask if it keeps myself and others safe. No big deal.

Okay. Another attempt at painting in oils on the docket for today.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
