Rose of Sharon

August 1, 2021 at 9:52 am by Claudia

The little cutting of Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus), given to me about 4 years ago by my friend Noble, is blooming. And there are a heck of a lot of buds on the plant. Actually, it had two blooms last year which finally emerged and were promptly eaten by deer. Hence, this protective cage. I’m so thrilled to see these gorgeous flowers!

I have another cutting in that patch of garden, but it’s slow growing. I expect to see blooms in the next year or two.

Everything seems to be in bloom as I mentioned the other day. It’s truly glorious out there. We’re due for some rain and storms later this afternoon. But at this moment, you’d never know it.

The robins are still in the nest, but they’re awfully squirmy! Wings are frequently flexed, little faces peek over the edge of the nest looking at the world they’ll explore when they leave the nest. We keep a close eye on the nest – well actually, I keep a close eye on the nest. Don checks in, but I am the obsessive one. I report back to Don.

The latest painting is almost finished. I expect to finish it today or tomorrow. It’s been a challenge, to say the least! There are certain elements I can recreate in the painting, but some are still just beyond my skill level – or maybe knowledge level is a better term. I love learning as I go and I do think each painting is a bit better than the last.

After a frustrating week waiting to hear from Apple about my laptop, I got a text message yesterday saying the repair was finished and that it would be shipped FedEx. It looks like I’ll get it sometime tomorrow. Hurrah! It’s been difficult writing this blog without it. I’ve had to download pictures via the iPad, though I can’t use my usual photo editing program. After I download them, I start a draft post with the photo, then save it, and sign out. Then I sign in on Don’s laptop, where I write the actual post. Don has been incredibly generous with his laptop, but I try not to use it for long because he uses it in his recording work. That’s why I often don’t reply to comments until the next day, when I’m just finished writing my post.

Anyway. I miss it. I need it. And it’s on the way.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Number 6 – Roseville Ixia

July 5, 2021 at 9:48 am by Claudia

Pottery Portraits #6 – Roseville Ixia.

Oil on Paper 6″ x 9″ Finished 7/4/21

I’m really pleased with this one. I can see improvement each time I tackle a new painting. Maybe it’s crazy, but, though I certainly don’t want to limit my painting to Roseville Pottery, I’m quite happy capturing the beauty of Roseville Pottery for the time being. I also think these pieces are a good teacher, if you will. The shapes and the variations in the glaze work together as a lesson in highlights and shadows. That realization struck me this morning.

Yes, I want to do more landscapes and buildings and maybe some animals, but right now, I feel these pieces are my instructors and I’m so grateful I had the idea to paint one of them.

I’ve titled the series: Pottery Portraits.

Thank you for all your lovely anniversary wishes yesterday. I took the day off from replying but I hope you know that I read each and every one of them. Bless you.

As Don said this morning: “We’re ridiculously happy.”

We are.

It was a quiet day. I weeded a bit outside, trying to corral wild vines and mint-run-amok. I hadn’t planned on finishing the painting yesterday – I was going to give it one more day to dry – but I came in from outside and looked at the easel and thought, “Why not?” So I corrected some areas that didn’t look right and picked the background color and it’s done. Now for the next subject. I have a couple in mind.

But first, some mowing is in order.

Everything is flowering here; coneflowers, chickory, phlox, day lilies, bee balm. Splashes of color are everywhere. I love this time of year.

More fireworks last night, this time from another direction. I suppose there will be more tonight. I’ve seen more than my share of fireworks in my lifetime and I’m over them. We don’t even get up and look outside to see if we can spot where they are in the sky. They upset animals and birds, they upset those with PTSD, they can be a danger to vegetation and wildlife, especially in dry areas. Why do we need them at this point?

We’re currently watching a Swedish version of Wallander. Excellent. And I’m reading the second Ruth Galloway mystery,  The Janus Stone. I’m just about to finish it. And we watched the Mets/Yankees game yesterday afternoon.

Okay. Hope you’re all well. I’m going to make some oatmeal and get ready to mow.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Painting, Masks, & The Letter T

May 19, 2021 at 9:36 am by Claudia

The gorgeous weather continues. It’s going to get warmer, into the eighties, which is a bit too warm for my taste. We’ll be putting in the bedroom window a/c unit later today because that upstairs bedroom gets warm at night.

In case you ever see a missing letter “t” on this blog it’s because my keyboard T is hardly working, which means I’ll have to visit the Apple store soon. It’s annoying, to put it mildly. It gets a bit better as the computer warms up, but I almost always have to hit it 3 times before it works. (Now, after typing this post, it’s working well. Go figure.)

A frustrating painting session yesterday. Nothing seemed to be working, I couldn’t mix the colors I wanted, I didn’t like the way it looked. So, my second attempt was not a happy experience. Don, as always, brought me back to reality and reminded me that I’ve barely started this journey. It’s all about learning. I do watch some teaching videos and they help me with the basics. I just have to go for it and experiment and see what works and what doesn’t. I was feeling sorry for myself, but thankfully, that is over. I’m going to do a couple of small studies today on paper. Start small.

I watered everything yesterday; grass seed, morning glory and zinnia seeds, all the potted plants on and off the porch. I have gently urged Don to water the grass seed today…we’ll see if he remembers.

I’m really enjoying my reread of Nine Coaches Waiting  by Mary Stewart. I haven’t read it in many years. Such a wonderful sophisticated romantic mystery by the Queen of that genre. I read a chunk of it every night before I go to sleep. What would I have done without Mary Stewart in my teens? I specifically remember a car trip with my parents to visit old friends who lived in New Jersey. I fell asleep while reading The Ivy Tree  and my mom removed the open book from my hands when she came in to check on me.

Gov. Cuomo has gone along with the recommendations of the CDC as of today, although individual stores can set their own policies. Oblong Books, for example, is requiring masks until sometime in June, partly to ensure the safety of staff members who haven’t been fully vaccinated yet, as well as for children and the immunocompromised. Don’s going to the grocery store this morning, so we’ll see if they still require them. No masks for those who are fully vaccinated, but you know that those who refuse to be vaccinated will also not wear masks, and there’s no way to check on that unless you require those who are fully vaccinated to show their card upon entering the store. Anyway, both Don and I have decided we will continue to wear masks indoors (in a public setting.) I was talking to our next-door neighbor the other day and they are also continuing to wear masks indoors – and each of them had COVID early, in February/March of 2020.

I don’t love it, but I surely don’t mind wearing a mask if it keeps myself and others safe. No big deal.

Okay. Another attempt at painting in oils on the docket for today.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
