Experiments and Surprises

July 17, 2018 at 8:54 am by Claudia

Playing with digital cameras and film cameras. It was so frigging hot and humid yesterday that I’m amazed we managed to take any pictures at all!

First, let me show you a close-up of Don’s new baby:

It’s gorgeous. He practiced putting it together and taking it apart yesterday morning. Fortunately, he had taken a video of Louis showing him how to do it.

In the meantime, after writing a blog post, I started to unbox my new Canon 77D. I’d show you a picture, but it doesn’t look all that different from my Rebel T3i. But it’s definitely an upgrade and I can tell by the quality of my photos. It came with an 18-35mm lens, which can take wide angle shots like this one of the kitchen:

I’ve never been able to get this much of the kitchen in one shot. (For better or worse!)

I took a lot of pictures of this pink and cream moth I found on the lavender. I’ve never seen this kind of moth before. So pretty!

I took a lot of experimental photos, just to get an idea of what the camera can do. There’s a lot to learn and I’ve just started.

Don bit the bullet and started experimenting with his Crown Graphic. I was the model. Since the shots are polaroids, there’s much to learn about not only manually focusing the camera, but finding the right light and figuring out how long to wait until the photograph is revealed.

He’s texting Louis about his photos.

I took this with the new camera.

Considering this camera weighs a ton and that this kind of photography is new to him, he took some pretty good shots. The challenge is that the film is expensive, yet he needs to play around with it for a while, so we’ve just accepted the fact that this first week will be about using a lot of film.

So far, I’m loving my new camera. I’ll use both of my cameras, of course, but for now, I’ll concentrate on the 77D.

And speaking of cameras, if you follow Don on Instagram, you’ve probably seen some of his Holga photos. Holgas are made in Japan. They’re plastic and were manufactured for children as a way of teaching them photography. In the years since they first appeared, they’ve become popular with photographers and now they have a huge following. The fun thing about these film cameras is that each camera is different; they have their individual quirks. There’s often vignetting around the image. Sometimes, light does funny things to the film. My camera’s pictures look different than Don’s.

We take the film to be developed at B & H and then we have the negatives digitally scanned and emailed to us. I got my first batch back yesterday and I’ll be sharing them with you off and on for the next few days.

Taken on Ninth Avenue in NYC. This guy was taking a break, sitting next to his bike. I love black and white photography, though I also shot a roll in color.

Gosh, I love film! And the funkiness of the Holga makes me happy! You never know how the shot is going to come out.

Before I close – in the garden:

I didn’t plant white coneflowers here. They’re volunteers from the big garden bed.

Photography, Holgas and the garden are full of surprises.

Happy Tuesday.

Photo Ops

July 14, 2018 at 8:31 am by Claudia

We took a little afternoon drive yesterday, purely for the purpose of working on our photography skills. This was taken at one of our local farm stands. Don had his Holga (our little plastic Japanese cameras) and his iPhone and I had my Holga, my iPhone and my big girl camera. And I was carrying all three! This picture is from the big girl camera. The iPhone photos are on Instagram. The Holga photos are an unknown quantity right now because they use film. Yes, film. We’re headed into the city tomorrow (Don’s going to get his ‘new’ vintage camera (he’s going to start studying with Louis Mendes.) I’m going to upgrade my big girl camera, and we’ll be dropping off our film at B & H. Plus, we’re going to sneak in a little visit to the Community Garden. It’s “All Photography, All the Time!!” in the Hill-Sparks household.

I find photography fascinating. And it’s great for Don to have something new to focus on. He’s really missing his cast mates and everyone involved in Margaritaville. It’s been over a week since he’s seen them and the fact that the show is over is really hitting him.

Also from the local farm stand, with our mountains in the background. This hollyhock is gorgeous. Mine are rather disappointing this year. But this? Amazing.

I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Design Sponge, an excellent design website that has been around for years and was created by Grace Bonney. I’m a follower and have been for several years. Grace and her wife, Julia, moved up to this area from Brooklyn a few years ago. We walked into our bank lobby yesterday and there was Grace! I introduced myself to her and we chatted for a while. She’s a warm and lovely person, as I expected she would be.

Off to make another cup of coffee.

Happy Saturday.

The Dilemma

April 8, 2018 at 10:05 am by Claudia

Dear readers, it is sometimes hard to come up with yet another photograph for a blog post. I mean, how many photos of the interior of my house can I inundate you with until you begin to scream?

And the outside? Well, it isn’t all that attractive at the moment. We’re in that pocket between winter and spring. The daffodils are coming up. I see some growth here and there, but taking a photo of it would require a kneeling position on the cold grass and/or gravel and that ain’t gonna happen today.

It’s too early to clean out the garden beds as there as been mild frost the past two nights, so the leaf mulch must stay in place for a while longer. So no pretty pictures from the garden.

And really, do you want to see pictures of all the debris from the wind and falling limbs and that sort of thing that I raked up yesterday afternoon? I thought not. Actually, raking wore me out. I realize that I have to get back into gardening shape after a fairly sedentary winter. But it was so lovely to be outside on a cold, but sunny, day.

And certainly you don’t want to see pictures of me vacuuming every corner of the house, which is what I did after raking? No, of course you don’t.

This is the dilemma of the every-day-of-the-year blogger. Sometimes, life isn’t all that interesting. Or photogenic.

But I do have one little photo for you, snapped this morning in a moment of desperation.

This is where my tiny Wallace Nutting ended up. I couldn’t find the perfect place to hang it, at least not until I get a few more smallish Nuttings for the wall in the office. Then I’ll be able to insert it into a larger display. But I quite like it here on the shelf in the den, in front of the Nancy Drews. It works.

That copy of Anne of Green Gables  was my mother’s. I was lamenting the loss of some of my mother’s childhood books that were also a part of our childhood one day on the blog. They had lived on a shelf in our bedroom. Our estranged sister somehow ended up with a lot of them. When Meredith read the post, she remembered that she had some of Mom’s books, so she secretly sent them off in the mail and completely surprised me. I opened the package to find Anne, along with Mom’s copy of Daddy Long Legs, and one of my dad’s books. I’ll freely say that I cried. It was like a reunion with dearly loved friends.

I have the best sister.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
