Framed

January 16, 2015 at 9:02 am by Claudia

I escaped from the house yesterday. Suffering from a case of cabin fever, I asked Don if he wanted to take a little drive south to Target. Not all that exciting, but I had a little list of things I needed to buy and I just wanted to get out of the darned house. It was a wee bit warmer outside and sunny (lord, what a difference the sun makes in a winter day!)

We were forced to make a stop at Five Guys, forced, I tell you. So we went with it and bought an order of french fries. I’ve told you before that I think they are the best french fries ever, and they are. Oh my goodness.

That was my lunch for the day.

An addition to the corner I highlighted yesterday, courtesy of Target:

1-16 family photo

The family. Framed.

I used Shutterfly to have some copies made of three of the photos we shot that day. The ‘outtake’ is in a frame on the table next to the sofa. I’m planning on sending some copies to my sister, as well as a framed copy to my dad, who has been complaining that he doesn’t have an up-to-date photo of us. He’s right, he doesn’t. Hopefully, he’ll like this one.

Have any of you seen the British series Broadchurch? We are latecomers to this one. Several people I knew recommended it highly, so we watched it on Netflix. We watched 3 episodes the first night and last night we watched 5 episodes in a row! We couldn’t ‘put it down.’ Just like the best kind of mystery, this series was riveting. It was so well written, so well acted, full of characters that were multi-layered, highly complex; not always black and white, definitely in shades of gray. I can’t stop thinking about it today. It really got into my head and heart.

Watch it, if you can. There’s a second season that just started airing in England. I look forward to the day it’s available here.

Gotta say, the Brits just do these things better than we do. Yes, there are exceptions here that are ground-breaking and powerful, and I’m sure there are series running on British television that lean more toward average. I’ve seen them. But on the whole, there is so much more depth, so many more risks taken. There are roles that actors can sink their teeth into, roles for for older actors, roles for average-looking actors, not just pretty young things. Character actors who look real, who have wrinkles, or freckles, or graying hair, or a face that isn’t just like every other face are used again and again. Indeed, they seem to be respected and honored.

How nice to see people on screen who’ve lived a life.

Anyway, I recommend it highly. It’s unbelievably well done.

Real Life: The Un-Pin Worthy

July 21, 2014 at 8:57 am by Claudia

Good news on the ‘feeling poorly” front: I am feeling much better today. Still a bit puny, but much better than earlier this weekend. Clearly, I had some sort of bug. Yesterday morning, I thought I’d never stop sweating…I had to throw my pajamas in the wash for the second day in a row. But by mid-afternoon, that had finally stopped. I managed to make mashed potatoes last night, but that finished off all my remaining energy for the day. Tired this morning, still a bit wimbly (Don’s favorite word for this kind of thing) but feeling like I’m slowly crawling out of the muck.

Don’t worry. I’ll take it easy today.

the anti pinterest

I have entitled this: The Un-Pin Worthy Photo.

But it’s real life. There are photos on this blog of my fabulous Vernor’s crate and Riley’s Dish Garden that are Pin Worthy. But this, my friends, this is the way this table is ninety percent of the time.

Likewise this:

house view 1

A picture of the house shot at an overly sunny moment in the day. But if we back up a bit, we get this:

house view 2

The chimney wrapped in a blue tarp, which has been there for several months and will continue to be there until we can save the money to get the masonry re-done. (That’s what was causing the leak in our bedroom.)

Un-Pin Worthy. And, often, Un-Blog Worthy. But you know what? The more I read blogs (and I’ve been reading them for about 7 or 8 years) the less interested I am in always seeing pretty pictures. Don’t get me wrong, I love a pretty picture as much as the next person and I like to take pretty pictures. But what draws me to a blog for the long run is substance. Stories. Real life. Adventures. Not just beautifully dressed children looking as if they popped out of a catalog. Or beautiful photos of the blog author looking like she stepped out of a catalog. Or, most often, beautiful photos of living spaces with nothing out of place that look like a magazine spread. Every once in a while? Sure! We all like to put on our best dress or show off our living spaces. I’ve done it here. Although, to be perfectly honest, every photo like that on this blog has something out of place. Or several things out of place. (I can’t help it.)

I just prefer the real. I like to know the person behind the blog. I like to see real life. That’s what keeps me coming back for more because pretty only does it for a short while. Then my eyes glaze over. You can show me pretty, but give me some substantive text and you’ve got me.

But, of course, there are all sorts of blogs out there and some of them are meant to be full of pretty pictures, are meant to look like magazine spreads, and more power to them. I’ve been known to while away 3 or 4 hours gazing at those photos. Those blogs are a nice little escape from real life and we all need that. They are the equivalent of what a magazine used to be for all of us.

‘Pinterest Worthy’ is nice, but it isn’t always real. And it’s easy to fall into that trap and feel less than worthy yourself because your table is piled high with mail and your garden has weeds and your bed is unmade and there is laundry to be done and no one has cleaned up the kitchen yet.

Hey, I’m not about to show you all the ‘real’ in my house…you don’t need to be privy to everything that goes on here! But I will try to show you as much of it as I can. Just so you know that all the pretty flower pictures (and that’s Mother Nature’s doing, not mine) are well and good, but we have a big old tree that fell in the back forty and we have poison ivy growing up several trees and there is a dead tree in the front yard and I’m overdue on weeding again and the Japanese Beetles decimated my roses. And the shot of the Vernor’s crate that was momentarily styled and free of clutter is a rarity. And the paint on my kitchen cupboards is chipping and they need cleaning and there is dog hair everywhere and every wall in this house needs painting.

That’s my real and imperfect life here at the cottage.

Happy Monday.

Poppy Study

June 1, 2014 at 8:45 am by Claudia

What can I say?

The Oriental Poppy is blooming.

From this:

oriental poppy bud

To this:

poppy 1

poppy 3

poppy 4

poppy 2

poppy 5

This plant has been in the garden for several years. For the past three years or so, the spring bloom has been spectacular. These flowers are short lived; they emerge in all their exotic beauty, with paper thin petals, and leave within a day or two.

Think you can’t use orange and purple together? Mother Nature begs to differ.

Simply stunning. Made for a painter to immortalize. Or for me to immortalize through the lens of my camera.

I love taking photographs of flowers. This time of year, when every day holds a new discovery, a new bloom? Heaven. I spend hours walking around the gardens, looking through my lens, trying new angles, new views, seeing the world through fresh eyes. This blog, this act of blogging, has opened up a whole new world to me. Yes, I loved taking pictures before I started blogging, but only with a small point-and-shoot. And pre-digital? I had to remember to take the film in to be developed. I wasn’t always successful on that front. Once I started blogging, which is such a visual medium, I started to observe the world around me with renewed and inspired eyes. I got a DSLR, which completely changed everything. Looking through a camera lens expands my horizons in the best possible way.

Speaking of photography, my other blog, which is called Through a Lens Daily, was started by me a few years back. My intention was to capture a single image every day and hone my photography skills and I did just that for a while. But I’ve been hit or miss the last year or so. I’m happy to say I’ve begun posting there again. The link is in my sidebar if you’re interested in stopping by. Just one image (more or less) every day. I also moved my blogroll over to Through a Lens Daily. It used to be in the navigation bar of MHC, but the plugin that I needed to use for that has been acting up. I keep up with other blogs in a variety of ways, one of which is my blogroll. So if you’ve ever used my blogroll to find new blogs, just hop on over to Through a Lens Daily. I do believe that it reflects my eclectic taste in blogs – there’s a lot of variety there.

Speaking of interesting blogs, if you dream of going to Paris as I do, you will love Paris in Four Months. Written by a Swedish photographer who moved to Paris for four months in 2012 and ended up staying, (and who can blame her?) it’s full of gorgeous images of that beautiful city.

I read her posts and I dream of going to Paris. With my husband, of course.

We will. Someday.

Today would have been my parents’ 68th wedding anniversary. Happy Anniversary Dad and Mom.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
