“Hartford Isn’t Kind To My Hair”

January 16, 2020 at 10:54 am by Claudia

We’re having another period of all-day-long-high-winds.

We’ve had so many of them lately.

It is rather beautiful, though. Sunny, windy, sometimes dark, then sunny again. We have a front bringing in much colder weather with a significant snowfall on Saturday. Next week, the temps will pretty much stay in the twenties. I guess our relatively mild stretch of weather is ending.

I got home around 6 pm yesterday after a concentrated stretch of coaching. After checking in with the director, I walked back to the apartment building, loaded up my car and headed home. It was rush hour, so traffic was slow at times and the whole time I drove directly west, the slowly setting sun was blinding me (and every other driver on the road). That, coupled with some insane drivers, made for a tense drive home. I was very glad to arrive home safely. Don had dinner ready and I was so tired I could hardly construct a complete sentence, but today is better.

I have no plans for today except to take it easy (and vacuum, something Don doesn’t think of doing) and enjoy being back in this little haven. I’m reading one of the Maigret novels by Georges Simenon. It’s a series I’ve always known of, but have never read. I picked this one up several months ago at Oblong Books. It’s only about 160 pages, so it will be a relatively quick read. Then I’ll tackle the newest Michael Connelly, which I had on hold with my local library system. There were so many people in the queue ahead of me, I thought getting it in my hands would take much longer, but it came in while I was gone and Don went to the library for me and picked it up. I’ve read every Michael Connelly ever written. I’m a huge fan.

As to the title of this post, I said these words to my husband last night. The water in Hartford is not kind to my hair. I forget this fact until I have to go back there. It renders it limp and useless. I can’t wait to take a shower here this morning and get it back in shape!

No offense, Hartford.

Happy Thursday.

What Are You Reading?

January 6, 2020 at 10:37 am by Claudia

Just a dusting of snow overnight. A stray flake or two falling.

Perfect. No cleanup necessary, no shoveling, no chipping away at ice. Thank you!

Well, we’re back into the non-holiday days of January. Though I’m happy to have a fresh start in a new year, I do dread the expanse of winter ahead. Don and I were saying it would be perfect if we had just three seasons a year, but it seems that isn’t going to happen, and considering the horrors of Climate Change, that’s a good thing.

We had a sunny day yesterday and this is a late afternoon view of the McCoy.

I’m in the middle of Jane Eyre. I’m really enjoying it. Brontë was such a wonderful writer. I swear I read it when I was young, but perhaps I just skimmed it? I’ve seen several adaptations of it on film and television, so I know the story. But I don’t remember reading all the detail that I’m reading at the moment, so it seems almost new to me.

I’m also reading The Seine, but I’ve had to temporarily put a pause on it because of Jane Eyre. Later today or early tomorrow, I have to read the script for the production I’m coaching.

So we come to my favorite question: What are you reading?

Happy Monday.

Discombobulated

January 3, 2020 at 10:41 am by Claudia

Gone.

That gorgeous Christmas Tree was so dry after having been here for over a month, that it had to come down yesterday. On top of running errands, we added the dismantling of the tree as one of our chores for the day. It took longer than I thought, but eventually, Don carried it out to the woods, propped it up against another tree and thanked it. We both said thank you repeatedly as we were taking down the ornaments. I do have qualms sometimes about trees – living things – being raised only to be chopped down for our temporary use during the holidays. I have to be honest and say that I go back and forth on that one, just as I do on a number of issues.

I missed seeing those lights when I came downstairs this morning. But I do like the clean look of the house.

Does this ever happen to you? You look everywhere to make sure you haven’t missed some decoration that needs to be packed away. You do it more than once, and finally, satisfied that you have corralled all of the Christmas stuff, you pack it away.

The next day, you notice something you missed. In my case, as I was sitting on the sofa having coffee with my husband this morning, I focused on Stella and saw the two bottlebrush trees that are sitting on her shelf. Whoops! I’ll have to find some place to put them until next year.

Did any of you notice that I closed yesterday’s post with “Happy Monday?” Yep. It wasn’t until we were in the car running errands that I realized it was Thursday, not Monday. The first thing I did when we came home was edit the post to the correct day. I swear, it seemed like a Monday! I’m discombobulated.

I’m working on Dove Cottage. I added some missing window sills and a window frame the other day. I’ll do a bit more today. And I’m deep into Jane Eyre, which is beautifully written, isn’t it? I have to finish it, then read the script for the play, then do some work on the dialects – all over the course of the next 4 or 5 days. I’m starting 2020 off with a work commitment and that makes me happy.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
