Butterflies, Flowers & Scout

October 2, 2013 at 9:22 am by Claudia

I saw my first Monarch Butterfly yesterday. We have a lot of milkweed around here, so there well may have been more of them flying around during my time away. But I have seen less and less of them each season, so I was thrilled to catch a glimpse of this beauty flitting from zinnia to zinnia. The first time I saw her I was outside with Scout and didn’t have a camera. The second time, I was able to run into the house and grab my older camera with the zoom lens.

Aren’t butterflies supposed to symbolize transformation? Good, because we can use some around here with our little Scout. She continues to have a hard time recovering and we continue to be concerned. She was nauseous yesterday and has been since she came home, so we took her back to the vet for some fluids and a shot of anti-nausea medicine. She also got a shot of penicillin, so that we don’t have to try to get her to take a pill for a couple of days. She hasn’t eaten much at all, she’s lost 4 pounds, and her breathing is labored. She has allergies and her breathing has become a bit raspier as she has aged, so some of it we weren’t worried about, but it’s worse now and she sometimes moans. We can’t always tell whether she’s moaning because she’s in pain or because her stomach is upset.

She’s walking around just fine and the doctor says her eyes and color look good. But yesterday, late in the afternoon, she seemed worse and I didn’t know what to do. We monitored her and eventually phoned the doctor who was on call to talk about her breathing. Of course, the minute we made the call and started discussing whether we should bring her in again, she started to sleep somewhat peacefully. So we decided to wait and she how she is today. I slept downstairs with her last night. The sofa in the den is pretty comfortable. She’s sleeping a lot, which is a good thing.

She’s been through so much and she’s a senior dog, so I expect her recovery might be longer and harder. She isn’t snapping back as quickly as she used to. It’s all very worrisome. It’s all I think about.

I came home on Saturday and she’s been to the vet every day since then. I just want her to get stronger and eat something because she needs the strength. She still needs your prayers, my friends.

Not much else to report here. The weather has been beautiful and warmer than usual. Sunny skies and golden light.

Thankful for zinnias that bloom at this time of year.

Scout, Cups & Morning Glories

October 1, 2013 at 9:46 am by Claudia

tuesmorningglory

Amazingly, the morning glories are still blooming here at the cottage, with new buds everywhere. If it stays relatively warm, I should be able to see these beauties for a bit longer. The zinnias are also still blooming, as are the cosmos and geraniums. Thank goodness! Otherwise, I would be forced to confront my severely injured garden bed and the now lopsided sugar maple tree. Seeing these flowers sure goes a long way toward lifting my spirits. Don and I sat on the funky patio yesterday, with the sun on our faces and flowers blooming everywhere. Much needed.

tuesfence

Splashes of color and riotous growth along the Chicken Wire Fence Garden = there’s still a bit of summer left. Of course, everywhere I look there are leaves on the ground so it makes for an interesting contrast between the onset of autumn and the end of summer.

Scout is hanging in there. The doctor gave her some Acepromazine (a sedative) yesterday and she apparently cannot metabolize it very quickly, so she remained out of it most of the day. I wish he hadn’t done that. The same thing used to happen with Riley. It wasn’t until around 5:00 or so that she started to shake it off. She’s sore and antsy and is constantly asking for water. I can only give her a bit at a time. She seems to have an appetite but she’s also a bit nauseous, due to the drugs in her system, so we’re taking things slowly. I really felt strongly that one of us should be downstairs with her during the night, so Don took the first shift and I took the second. She was constantly getting up and down during most of my shift, which kept me from sleeping. We finally moved to the den, where I set up her bed by the sofa and after another hour or so, we both got some sleep. Not enough, but it will do.

There’s still a bit of bleeding, but much less than there was. I’m keeping an eye on it. Her butt was shaved, of course, and I see she’s getting a bit of a rash, poor thing. Anyway. She’s here, she came through the surgery, she’s a fighter and she’s getting mildly demanding. That’s a very good thing.

Update: we’re going to take her in for an anti-nausea injection and some fluids. She threw up this morning. All of this was very, very hard on her.

I can’t tell you how much your prayers and support have meant to Scout, Don and me. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Remember the oversized tea/coffee cups I bought at Anthropologie?

Here is what I did with them:

tuescupboard

I originally saw this glass drying rack, along with some snazzy cups from Anthropologie, on a post at The Inspired Room. That post is what got me thinking about those cups again. And then I thought about the rack, which was only $14.99 at World Market. Of course, mine doesn’t look quite as pretty because I don’t have white counters and subway tile backsplash, but it will do.

Tuescoffeemaker

Coffee stations seem to be all the rage right now, but I’ve never felt the need for one. I always place my coffeemaker under the cupboard that holds our glasses and mugs. It’s also usually right next to the refrigerator where the half and half lives. Just makes sense. Since we don’t use flavored coffees or k-cups or any of that sort of thing and counter space is at a minimum here at the cottage, why the heck do we need a coffee station? Believe me, it took some rearranging just to give this drying rack a home, but I wanted to have those pretty cups on display. This is usually a darkish corner of the kitchen and those beautiful cups add the perfect punch of color. I think I’m going to keep my eye out for a vintage tole tray to put under the rack and the coffee maker.

Oh, forgot to tell you. The car repair was relatively minor and we passed the inspection in the nick of time. Yesterday was the deadline for our inspection! Now we have to deal with the chimney and the trees.

Love to you all on this Tuesday.

Welcome Home?

September 30, 2013 at 9:02 am by Claudia

bouquetfromdon

Well, those of you who subscribe via email or on a reader will get at least 3 posts today. (Sorry.) I updated about Scout’s condition twice yesterday and now I’m writing the official Monday post. For those of you who haven’t been able to stop by, Scout’s surgery went well. She came home in the late afternoon. But by about 7:00 we were concerned about bleeding. We had been told by the doctor there would be some bleeding occurring because they were unable to tie up the area where they removed the tumor. I don’t understand all of that, but she did bleed. That was okay, however, at one point she bled a lot and passed some clots. She was also agitated and wanted to drink water all of the time and she was breathing heavily. That was probably due to the anesthesia and the pain meds. But since she had not been out of surgery all that long, we spoke to the doctor on call and took Scout back to the hospital to spend the night. She needed to be watched and monitored by the staff.

Hopefully, we can bring her back home today. Poor baby. She’s been through a lot.

Meanwhile, may I take a moment, and only a moment, to say how overwhelmed I am? I was home for a mere 3 minutes when I discovered that Scout was having serious problems and we had to rush her to the doctor’s. On the way home, our car started sounded very noisy and when we pulled up our drive and got out to look, we saw that one end of the muffler had detached. Today we were supposed to get our car inspected. I’m thinking we would not pass that inspection. I’m crossing my fingers that it doesn’t involve a lot of money because we don’t have it. But we sure need a car. Oh, and we have to have the top of our chimney re-bricked, as well as re-flashed, if there is such a word, to the tune of $2000.00. Otherwise, the leaking will continue. On top of all of this, we have to have a big old dead tree taken down and all the trees pruned because of the damage to the maple and the catalpa. Lots more money.

Oh, and a good third of my garden was decimated when the maple limb fell. I have no idea what will come back and what has been damaged beyond repair. It’s heartbreaking. And I can’t get used to the maple without that beautiful limb.

Okay. Now you know what thoughts and worries are playing on an endless loop in my head. Thanks for letting me put that all down on virtual paper. Now I will turn it all over to the Universe/God/Divine Intelligence and trust that we will be provided for. (That isn’t always easy, is it? It’s a constant struggle for me.)

bouquetontable

Those flowers are from our local farmer’s market. Don bought them on Friday, posed for a picture holding the bouquet, and emailed it to me with a Happy Opening Night message. I really love them.

It’s a foggy morning. I’m thinking about Scout and hope the bleeding has subsided. Thank you for all of your prayers and messages of support. You are the best.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
