It’s pretty hot here right now. Yesterday wasn’t all that humid, but today promises to be. I’m running a bit late posting as I woke up in the middle of the night again and stayed awake for a few hours. I made myself stay in bed and, thankfully, I got some more sleep. My sinuses/allergies are leaving me feeling under the weather, so I wanted to make sure I got some sleep to help balance things out.
There’s not much new, my friends. This morning, I finished the first of the three Inspector Maigret novels I ordered. I’ll start the next one – Maigret Defends Himself – later today. I also have a newish biography of George Gershwin sitting in the wings, Summertime. Gershwin is one of my favorite composers – I’d say he sits firmly in the top five. I’ve loved his music since I was in junior high school and bought every recording of his work I could get my hands on and read every book about him I could find. I’ve been listening to a lot of his music lately.
Makes me happy.
Just saw mama deer and the tiny fawn up on the back forty. They are so sweet together. I tried to get a picture, but the bushes and the trees around the Secret Garden got in the way. I watched, just now, as they walked on the path Don made that leads out to our neighbor’s meadow.
We’re on a mission. Netflix just announced that Cheers will no longer be available as of July 1st. As you know, we’ve been watching all eleven seasons and we’ve got two more to go. We’re determined to get them in before the end of the month. Wish us luck!
The yarrow that self-seeds in the corral.
Stay safe.
Happy Wednesday.

Oh no! I’m only on Season 5 of Cheers. I haven’t gotten to Don’s episode yet. I guess I will have to turn the news off.
I just discovered I Know This Much Is True on HBO. It is based on a book by Wally Lamb…one of my favorite books ever.
I believe it airs on Sunday nights.
I have been watching lots of birds, especially hummingbirds. We seem to have quite a few this year. We have 10 acres of mostly woods and usually have deer. I haven’t seen any fawns for years though…what a treat.
We do however, have black bears in the area. One was hit by a car a couple miles from us. It kept going and is believed to be injured.
So we are keeping an eye out. I do not want to encounter an injured bear!
Hope you have a good day and better sleep tonight.
Stay safe
Claudia says
We have black bears, too. I saw one amble straight across the back forty a couple of years ago. And I was outside!
Stay safe, Marilyn.
Kay Nickel says
Oh no! We have been watching Cheers at your suggestion and enjoying it very much. We are still on season 3 so we will never see them all. Thanks for telling us .
Your garden looks beautiful.
Claudia says
Someone tells me All 11 seasons of Cheers are on Hulu. But if you don’t have Hulu, I’d watch through season 5 -at the end of that season, Shelly Long (Diane) leaves. All of Cheers is excellent, but I think it’s at its best with Sam and Diane. Don is in an episode called The Last Angry Mailman, Season 6, Episode 7.
Stay safe!
Emily says
I just jumped on Netflix to watch Don’s Cheers episode! I had been wondering which episode it was. Great show!
Claudia says
Thanks for watching, Emily! Stay safe.
Kelli says
Hulu has all 11 seasons of Cheers.
It’s funny, you mentioned watching it and we just happened to be, too! Loved seeing Don. Thanks for letting us know, I had no idea he had a part.
Claudia says
Thanks for that info, Kelli. I’ll pass it along to the readers. Don’s been on pretty much everything, from Three’s Company to Mr. Robot. Check out his IMDB site. You’ll see. Stay safe!

I’ve got to get back to my Gershwin book –Michael Feinstein’s “The Gershwins and Me” (which has more Gershwins and less “me” but enough that it’s good on both ends. It’s hard cover and a little more clunky! I’m readng “The Parisiennes” right now — non-fiction by Anne Sebba about the woman of Paris — good and bad — during WWII/occupation. The resistance stories are both heartbreaking and inspiring. After that I’ll take on another mystery or two. I need something light after the Gestapo, resistance and concentration camps.
Lucky to see your fawn. Our closest wildlife is a mama bunny and her four babies who have a hole next door and show up in the yard at dusk.
We’re heading north tomorrow — taking everything we might possibly need (I hope) with us. We shall see. If we forget something, my plan is to do without, though Rick will go to the store. It’s hot as all get out here today… I think another day in the 90s and if it’s not, it’s darned close. A good day to lay in and lay low! Keep cool!
Claudia says
I miss seeing bunnies around here. We usually have so many!
You’re on your way to the cottage on the lake? I’m jealous – I have to admit. I grew up going to my family’s cottage on a lake in Michigan every summer. If there’s anything I regret, it’s not being able to have a getaway on a lake. So much a part of my life from childhood through my young adult years. Drive safely and stay safe!
jeanie says
We go to Otsego Lake, near Gaylord. I have a good walking path — one mile around the circle, add another mile and a half if I go by the public beach and back too. I doubt there will be too many there this week, but I’ll feel comfortable on the walk. The Michigan anti-covid FB site has posted some horror stories about the lack of masks and distance in various spots in the north but I haven’t heard about my town. We might take a drive through just to see what’s still there but I don’t plan on checking the shops or store. It’s cooled down since yesterday’s mega-rain so it will be a good long weekend for working outside and getting things back in order! I wish you could enjoy.
Claudia says
We spent a lot of time camping near Gaylord and Vanderbilt. I knew the area well at one point. I also worked as a camp counselor near Mio and the Au Sable River. Love ‘up north.’
Ellen D. says
You are lucky to have that property to share with nature! I love the idea of paths through your woods and gardens. Beautiful!
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Ellen. Stay safe!
Donnamae says
Everything looks lovely. Is that bumble bee on catmint? Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
Yes, it is. Bumblebees love catmint! Stay safe, Donna.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Such pretty pictures today. Everything is so lush right now. Mowing has been a twice per week event here lately. We had about an inch of rain yesterday late aft and looks like a bit more this aft. But after that the humidity is supposed to break and we are to have about 6 days of lovely 70’s again!!!
Our fridge was dying a painful death so we ordered a new one which was delivered today. The kitchen looks like a tornado went through it. What a mess. Hope your day is going well!!!!
Claudia says
We’re due to have thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow morning – it’s awfully humid right now! We’re indoors with the a/c on. Glad you got your new refrigerator! Stay safe, Chris.
Brenda B says
Don’t yell
I have never liked Cheers
Tried to watch once
Will look for that one with Don though lol
Claudia says
You don’t have to like it. Though I will say, in my opinion, that with any television series, you have to watch more than one episode to judge it. It’s essential to see a bigger picture before you pass on it. There are several series that I ended up loving but distinctly remember not liking the first episode. Stay safe, Brenda!
brendab says
True…there are a couple of reasons it doesn’t appeal to me. I remember trying to watch it before. I finally watched F. That show was funny…Your Don was so good. I prefer mysteries, political shows…and of course, the Law and Order shows…I hope you and Don get to work soon. I would love to see him on another show…
Claudia says
He was on at least 4 or 5 episodes of Law and Order. But then again, everyone I know who acts in NYC was!
Brenda B says
I am assuming Don is the real estate agent
Great job!!!

Roxie says
Claudia, I have found that wearing a mask in the garden and then showering head-to-toe afterwards has made a huge difference in lessening my hayfever/allergy attacks.
My DIL and I just started creating a garden for her kitties, which I didn’t even know was a thing. Planted catmint first. We hope the catnip from seed cooperates. Then some climbing structures and hidey holes. Her shy girlie just took her first voluntary foray outdoors!
Stay safe and enjoy life!
Claudia says
I did wear a mask the other day, and I always shower afterward – it didn’t work! We were mowing and it was very dry out there, so grass was flying. I’m allergic to grass pollen.
What a lovely idea to make a garden for cats!
Stay safe, Roxie.

another night of not-great sleep? drats! i told you what i do when i have trouble sleeping (listen to timed youtube recordings of thunderstorms or ocean waves). here’s a tip that someone told me a long time ago … lay in the position you most tend to sleep in (on your side or back, etc., whatever is most comfortable) with one eye open and the other eye shut. just keep doing that because at some point the mind gets to relax a bit for focusing on keeping the eyes open/ shut and the open eye gets tired enough to finally stay shut. may or may not be worth a try, but i hope you don’t need those ideas and just get back to sleeping better!
thanks for the tip about “cheers” leaving netflix and good luck getting it all watched in time. i liked that show a lot, but even funnier for me was the spin-off “frazier”. i thought the casting was great, especially the characters of frazier and niles … they evenlooked a lot alike. and i loved how nervous and sweet niles would get around daphne and when ordering his coffee drinks.
glad you saw the deer and her fawn again and are enjoying the books.
i can say what you said … not much news here. except the governor announced today that, as of this friday, she is lifting all coronavirus-related restrictions … everything can be open and at 100% capacity … because (as she repeatedly says) she “knows iowans will do the right thing and keep social distancing”. just as the number of cases here has started to rise again. perfect timing, huh? ugh.
i did not iron clothes this weekend so i best do that now.
hope you all stay safe and well!
kathy in iowa
Claudia says
We loved Frasier – Don was in it twice. A few years back, we watched that show in the same way we’re watching Cheers, from start to finish.
Unbelievable that you Governor is ceasing restrictions as the numbers go up in states that have already done that.
Stay safe, Kathy!
Vicki says
I’ve had so many shows I’ve liked, only to have them disappear forever. If they were in the first year of a series and didn’t have enough episodes (certainly not the case with Cheers!), they don’t get on DVD or any other format of which I’m aware; I could re-watch them again and again if I could just ever find them; instead, a lot of stuff on TV these days is, in my opinion, junk.
Lovely photos of your beautiful property. Thanks for showing them. Stay safe AND cool.
Claudia says
We almost never watch commercial television. The only exception was Will and Grace and now the reboot of that series has ended. Sad when you have to watch reruns of older shows to find any quality whatsoever. Stay safe, Vicki!
