Despite the destructive efforts of the deer, I have a least one flower on the Rose of Sharon. I might get two or three more. (I could have had 20 of these beauties, darn it!) Anyway, I’m grateful for this one. I opened the blinds in the bedroom this morning, looked outside, and saw this gorgeous lavender flower. So excited! Next year, it will be protected, you can be sure of that.
We watched the Convention last night. I thought it was incredibly well done. In fact, I would go so far as to say that I prefer it this way. There’s a sense of intimacy that you don’t get with a huge audience of delegates. I felt that each speaker was talking directly to me.
Michelle Obama. That’s all I need to say. Such a powerful speech. I love her.
Since we usually start to get ready for bed at 10 pm, we were up later than usual, which means I slept a little longer than usual. My schedule is sort of all over the place lately. But it was worth it.
Dear reader Kathy in Iowa has sent me a couple of gift certificates for The Mysterious Bookshop and Oblong Books. Thank you so much, Kathy! I so appreciate your thoughtfulness. The perfect gift for this book lover.
And Barbara sent me a package yesterday containing a book, a face mask in Liberty of London’s tana lawn fabric along with some squares of the tana lawn, a mini version of our “Life is very short”…sign that we have hanging on our staircase wall (it’s going in Don’s mini studio) and this:
Eeeek! I had admired this refrigerator when Barbara posted it on Instagram. It’s made by an Etsy seller, TinyfrankMiniatures. It’s carved out of wood. I searched high and low for a realistic retro refrigerator for Hummingbird Cottage and never found one. The few I found were made of plastic, weren’t to scale, and looked cheap. I finally made one myself out of a wooden box and I was quite pleased with it. So now, the question is: do I change it out with this one or do I use this one in a different project? Not sure, yet. I just know I love it. That curve at the top! (I wish we had one like this in our cottage.)
Thank you, Barbara!
It’s a beautiful day here. Low humidity and 80 degrees. Perfect summer weather.
Stay safe.
Happy Tuesday.

Am still avoid the political agenda…however, I watched Michelle Obama’s speech this morning…enough said…gracious…to the point…and truthful as always…love your flower…it is rainy and chilly today, unusual…the heat is on the way. Just mailed in application for voting by mail…let us hope it arrives in time…no problem with the primary, I assume…have a good good day…
Claudia says
Glad you watched her speech, Brenda. She was simply superb!
Stay safe!

P. S. Is Hamnet about the son of Shakespeare? I don’t remember this book, and before donating, I had a huge collection of S. books…I also don’t remember seeing it either time in the books at Stratford upon Avon…or The Globe….interested…
Claudia says
yes

I agree with you about the convention. I have always thought the marching, whooping and sign waving were quite distracting. Not to mention just a tad silly.
Claudia says
Very distracting!
Thanks, Cindy.
Stay safe.

Ref. : the fridge: Now I’m jealous!
Ref. : the deer: A dog would help (shame on me, now I’m cheeky)!
Stay safe!
Claudia says
It would help, but only a little! We had dogs and the deer still walked through the property!
Stay safe, cheeky Helga!

DITTO!
YES!!! and I wish they would always hold the convention this way. it’s much more personal.
and it would be less wasteful money-wise and in every other way!
you can hear yourself think and concentrate on the people speaking.
and the tiny refrigerator is wonderful!
Claudia says
Me too. This is the way it should be run!
Thanks, Tammy!
Stay safe.

I was impressed by the convention. I thought the speakers were great and the support of Bernie and the Republicans was a good thing, some of the videos very powerful and some of the speakers, heartbreaking.
As for Michelle — well, she can speak at my convention anytime! On anything. She’s amazing. That’s an overused word I try not to use. But this time it is well deserved. Plus, it got out at a decent time — no applause and long gaps slowing it down!
LOVE the fridge!
Claudia says
She IS amazing. I agree!
Stay safe, Jeanie.

Well, after following along with your dollhouse adventures, I finally decided to start one for myself. I purchased an old Greenleaf model called the Madison because it seemed the least complicated to build & the price was right. I am waiting for my Easy Cutter to arrive so I can begin my flooring. I’ve reread all of your dollhouse posts and can’t wait for my supplies to arrive so I can begin construction – I am ordering everything online- it’s been a slow process.
Claudia says
Yay! Great news Liz! You will love the Easy Cutter. So excited for you!
Stay safe!
Lottie says
I agree with you, Claudia, about Michelle Obama. I looked forward to her speech all day long and it was just like we were talking one on one.
Claudia says
Exactly.
Thanks Lottie!
Stay safe.

Oh, how I agree with you that the convention seemed elevated by not seeing all the people in the ridiculous clothing, hats, hooping and hollering constantly. This seemed so dignified. I LOVED the montage of The Preamble. I love those words and remember memorizing them in grade school. And the 50 young people singing was beautiful. The testimonials of the “everyday” people were heartfelt. Most especially the one from the young woman whose father died of Coved and had voted for Trump. And Michelle Obama….. just beautiful words. Two hours of intelligence was a breath of actual clean air to breathe in and enjoy. I look forward to the next few days as well. The 2 hours was just enough, and I went to sleep in a much better frame of mind last night!!
Claudia says
The testimony from the woman who lost her father was heartbreaking and very powerful
Intelligence. Facts. Hope.
We desperately needed this.
Stay safe, Chris.

You too, Nora!
Thank you.

what a pretty flower. glad you got one! along with that pretty summer weather today. :)
i didn’t see much of the democratic convention last night, but i liked what i saw for the reasons you mentioned and that some members of his own party spoke publicly that trump needs to be a one-term president.
i, too, would like a real-life refrigerator like the one barbara sent you! think it would look great in my little place built in 1950 … timeless style.
had a crummy start to my day … can i vent a little here, please? my boss told me that two people together complained to her about me … accusing me of doing something i didn’t do (my boss actually did the thing they didn’t like … i have no authority there), then saying they were going to take up a collection to buy me a haz-mat suit as i was “ridiculous” wearing a mask and staying six feet from them, that such actions were “making them feel like they are contagious”. and one of them (several weeks ago) yelled at me, swore and hung up the phone – twice – when i wouldn’t (and couldn’t) tell her what i knew about someone there having been exposed to covid-19. seriously?!? ):( the part that’s ridiculous is they shouldn’t be complaining to my boss, but about her … she doesn’t take covid-19 precautions (only wearing a mask sometimes in her office) nor require the three men that work there to take any. what a crazy world. ugh.
thanks for listening.
now i am home, showered and taking it easy for the rest of the night. going to read the third short story in that agatha christie book.
and you’re welcome, claudia. i hope you find something you’ll enjoy reading!
have a nice night and stay safe!

Kathy, you are such a kind and caring soul. I wish you could come and work with me! Like everyone, I’m pretty tired when I get home from work these days, so I’ve been listening to audiobooks before bed – heaps of AC on YouTube. One of my favourites is Christopher Lee reading “Witness for the Prosecution”. Lots of Mr. Quin too. Take care of you!
kathy in iowa says
hej, barbara w …
thank you for your kind words. :)
what type of setting do you work in? (i am a social worker.)
i am often tired when i get home after work and am sorry that you get that way, too. hope you have lots of interests and outlets for thoughts and feelings, time to rest and are well. while my “to do” list is long and i have many hobbies, i have set a limit on how much i do when home (i “watch” tv – and nap – much more often now due to covid-19). some things will just have to wait. and it’s a good thing i don’t mind eating leftovers.
i appreciate your suggestions about books on youtube, specifically agatha christie, too! i will try to find the one you mentioned, but will save it for some evening, not bedtime … i am trying to train myself to relax and fall asleep quickly by consistently listening to the same thing (ocean waves or thunderstorm recordings on youtube) when i go to bed.
hope you and your family are well, safe and have all you need and want. stay safe!
thanks again.

I am so sorry you have to go through that crap. These people have their heads in the sand and you should not be taken to task because you are following guidelines from the CDC. You are welcome to vent any time, Kathy. I wish I could go and give these people a piece of my mind.
Stay safe and keep doing what you’re doing.
kathy in iowa says
hej, claudia!
thanks very much for your kindness and support, too.
what my boss told me (that those two people said to her) stuck with me a long time yesterday. got over it, but then i was mad at myself for letting it bug me (because i am doing the right thing by wearing a mask, etc). over all that now. one of those two people (the one who yelled, swore at me in two phone calls and twice hung up on me when i wouldn’t tell her about someone else possibly being exposed to covid-19) asked for and received my help yesterday and she was all smiley and chatty, left by saying “thank you, dear”. ugh. i was civil and helpful, but … ooh, there’s little i dislike more than someone being two-faced like that.
anyway, it’s over.
thanks again very much. i appreciate you and this mhc place and everyone who gathers here. that’s because of you … the wonderful person you are.
hope you and don are having a good night, you both are well and stay that way.
kathy in iowa

And it’s always so obvious when someone is being two-faced. They think they’re pulling it off, but they aren’t.
Stay safe, Kathy.

oops … meant to add a question:
behind the mini refrigerator looks to be a homer laughlin apple tree bowl (right?). i’ve seen them in a lighter green and that aqua blue. my question is … have you or anyone else here seen that bowl in cream or white or know if it was ever made in those colors? please and thanks.
good night, all!
kathy in iowa
Claudia says
It’s the Orange Tree bowl, Kathy. I wish I could help you but I don’t think I’ve ever seen them in any color but this one. Have you tried doing a search on eBay? That might show you if it comes in any other colors. xo
Found one on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/769696149/orange-tree-bowl-homer-laughlin-white

oh, thanks, claudia! :)
going to check it out!

The fridge is cute as can be. I’m in awe of people who can actually make things like this.
I think I prefer political conventions to be run like this one going forward. The old model has outlived its usefulness. My husband worked in a Republican administration here in WI in the nineties running a state agency. So he still has quite a few Republican friends and they’ve been telling him that the RNC will never be able to pull off such a well organized event like the Democrats are doing this week. If what I read today is true – that the heavily armed couple in St. Louis will be speakers (keynoters??), the whole thing is going to be a joke. A frightening and sick joke, but a joke nonetheless.
Take care and enjoy the humidity-free weather.
Kay
Claudia says
Their convention will be full of fear-mongering and hate. That’s all they have.
Oh, and lies, of course.
Stay safe, Kay!
