A different view. This was taken just inside the kitchen. The pantry is on my left and next to that, the kitchen door. As is, of course – Don’s laptop and headphones on the coffee table. I don’t usually highlight the clock that I bought 10 or 11 years ago, but I do love it. It’s mounted on the side of the pantry and the antique marionette plates that we bought in Paris are right below it.
Of course, I bought it because of the style and that Jadeite green color. It’s two-sided, so you can see the time from the living room and the kitchen.
Did some work on the puzzle yesterday but my lower back has been bothersome of late and leaning over the table aggravates it, so today I’m going to take it easy. I finished Mrs. Tim Carries On this morning. I’m definitely going to read more by D. E. Stevenson. For those of you who love British books and books in general, I thought I’d mention an account I follow on Instagram that I’m sure you’d like. Her name is Miranda Mills and she frequently writes about books and reading. She also records a lot of videos, which I love. Her mother joins in on some of them, talking about books and baking. Until last year they lived in London, but they moved to Yorkshire, so you get to see a lot of the Yorkshire countryside, as well. She has two accounts: Miranda’s Bookcase, and Miranda’s Notebook. I was just watching her most recent vlog this morning, this one centering on humorous books. She is the person who turned me on to the Mrs. Tim books and many others.
And we watched The Dig last night. We’re a little late coming to it. I have heard nothing but raves about this movie, as has Don, so we carved out some time to watch it. Simply stunning. Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan are superb, as is the rest of the cast. We’re going to watch it again in a few days. As far as I’m concerned Ralph Fiennes can do no wrong. He is a superb actor – one of my favorites. If you haven’t seen it, it’s on Netflix.
Don is out shoveling. We got about 2 inches of heavy, wet snow, so for now, it looks like a winter wonderland with snow on all the branches. That will change as the day goes on and the temps reach 39.
I can appreciate it, and I do, but I’m pretty much over winter. I have to force myself to acknowledge its charms.
Stay safe.
Happy Tuesday.

Too fun. We too watched The Dig last night. We loved it too. Sunny and a bit warmer here today. The waves are carving up our ice “mountain” that has formed the past few weeks. I would just like to sit and watch it but I’m off to the doctor’s for a check up. Doesn’t it always work out that way? I sit here for weeks and look out at the gloomy ice but today when it’s absolutely gorgeous out I’m off..
Take care,
Eileen
Claudia says
Always the way! But the warming trend should continue, and hopefully you’ll get to sit and watch it soon.
Stay safe, Eileen!

I just finished reading “A Whole Life” by Robert Seethaler and was quite moved by it. Have you read it? I would recommend it. A simple life lived by a good man in the mountains and described so well. It is fiction and not a long book but it really made me think about my life and what I have and what I feel I “need”.
Stay cozy and safe!
Claudia says
I haven’t heard of it, Ellen, but I’ll put it on my list.
Thank you!
Stay safe.

hope your back feels better by now and that don feels alright after shoveling that heavier wet snow. take it easy!
glad you have some books to enjoy.
thanks for the suggestion on an instagram account. as a more visually-oriented person, i find lots of inspiration through ig accounts and blogs. i’d like to set up an account with them because right now ig only lets me see maybe ten photos a day total … ‘encouragement’ to set up my own account perhaps … but i have no computer here and my phone is full of thousands of photos so no room in it for an ig account at the moment. time to move photos to a jpeg or cloud account, i guess.
we have no precipitation in our forecast for the next ten days, only sunshine and highs between 32 and 50 degrees. will need to watch for that awful overnight re-freeze, but otherwise hope all that safer, easier weather makes its way to you, too!
a nice view and a great choice in that clock! nice for you to see both sides … it has wonderful graphics and color and that it works is a bonus. :)
i have an old (1940s? maybe a bit younger than that) metal two-sided sign that sticks out from a wall; it advertised paint and i love it. unfortunately there’s no room for it where i’d like in my small place (above my desk, where i paint) so it currently is in very safe storage until i either figure out a change here or move.
went for a covid test late yesterday. was told i will get the results either “within 24 to 48 hours” or “within the week”.
need to accomplish something today. want it to be the finishing of another knit hat, but more paper-sorting/shredding must come first.
hope you all are having a good day and stay safe!

Claudia says
So you have to stay quarantined until you get the results, Kathy?
I love two sided signs and fell in love with one a few years back but it was too big for our little cottage (and a lot of money!)
Stay safe.
kathy in iowa says
yes.
hopefully the results are good and soon known. i am to go back to work thursday and have an appointment for the next set of bone-building shots that afternoon, but it depends on the results. rescheduling those shots again just in case.
my boss is not happy. i’m not, either, but that’s how this stuff goes for now.
sorry you couldn’t get that two-sided sign, but i am glad you have that wonderful clock!
i love old signs and have two up here now … an old street sign with an arrow to “swimming pool 4 blocks” (that points to my bathroom … haha) and my favorite, an old wooden, two-sided sign for a laundromat in a small town whose business name has my father’s nickname and my mother’s name on it. :) <3 when I saw that sign at a twice-yearly junk jubilee, i ran to it and bought it without caring about the price … happily it was only $40. it hangs above my kitchen sink (where i wash things sometimes). i love seeing them every day; they make me smile.
hope you are having a nice day full of things that make you smile!

As you know, we love signs, too, and have several scattered around the house.

I had forgotten you had that clock. You definitely have the perfect setting for it, and it’s goes so well with everything. By design.
It’s been warm enough to melt some snow here. Yay. The ‘ice melt in the nylons’ works great. My husband is astounded…and it’s certainly a lot cheaper than anything more permanent. As I went in search of old pantyhose, (I had none), I did manage to clean out and organize my sock drawer…so that was an added benefit.
Hope your back feels better. Happy reading! ;)
Claudia says
I’m glad it worked for you, Donna! Yay!

My 70th birthday present from a daughter in 2019 was a guided tour with Dr. Clark Wernecke, director of the Gault School of Archeological Research, of the repository for the Gault Archeology Site. We were touring the immense repository for all the artifacts. The Gault site has turned up evidence that refutes the belief that Clovis peoples were the first culture on this continent. My daughter knew of my long-time wish to participate in a dig, rendered impossible by an auto-immune illness. So, I saw The Dig as soon as it was available. I loved it so much that I found myself dissatisfied with everything I tried to watch for a few days afterward.
Claudia says
What a lovely gift from your daughter, Linda.
A good movie, like a good book, often leaves you spoiled for a few days – nothing looks as good.
Stay safe.

We’re on the same wavelength. I watched “The Dig” last night, too, and I agree — it deserves and should have a second watch. Everything about it was really quite exquisite. I love what both Mulligan and Fiennes can do with their faces, with the slightest minuscule move of the eyes or the mouth, the tensing of a muscle. It was beautiful, too — wonderful design. I’ve read several articles about it and the accuracy of depicting the dig and the locations. Apart from shifting a bit of the timing, it is quite on target. The British Museum published an article that was quite high in praise for the accuracy of the details — how the pieces they pulled out looked, etc. And the performances are brilliant. I think next time I might turn up the captions — there were bits I couldn’t hear very well (I think it was too loud piano for the most part!)
Thanks for the info on Miranda’s accounts. I’ll need to check into those. The book looks like it’s right up my line. Right now I just started “Auntie Mame.” Rick has been bugging me to read it ever since he got it as part of our holiday exchange with friends when the theme was “We Need a Little Christmas.” Having enjoyed “Mame” so much, and the original Roz Russell film (someone should burn the Lucile Ball version), I’m looking forward to seeing the differences, of which, I suspect, there may be many.
Happy week. We’re melting today. I hope it keeps up.
Claudia says
Don’s been researching the true story and all the people involved. We, too, had a problem hearing those parts – the music was too loud.
Stay safe, Jeanie!

I watched ‘The Dig’ last week and it is so good. Powerful performances. I’ve been enjoying some good movies on Netflix and other streaming services . Sore arm is the only side effect of my covid vaccine and I’m so relieved to have had the first shot. I hope you and Don can find one soon. It’s lovely and sunny today so I’m off to enjoy some relaxing time in the fresh air.
Claudia says
It doesn’t look too likely at the moment. Someone said you have to stay up until midnight – but we can hardly ever stay awake that long.
Stay safe, Linda.

I just love your little cottage. So much personality! There’s an interesting article about the real characters in The Dig on Wardrobe Oxygen you might find it interesting. It’s back a few weeks. I love the movie, too. I learned a lot about the character’s real lives.
Claudia says
Thanks, Debby! Don has been researching the whole thing because he’s so intrigued.
Stay safe!

Hope your back feels better! My favorite part of your blog is seeing photos of your house and your miniatures. Your house looks so warm and cozy! You definitely gave me the miniature bug. I use to do them with my daughter when she was younger. Took everything we had packed away and had so much fun looking through it all. Of course, I had to look for new things on Etsy, etc.! Waiting patiently for a couple of orders. I also enjoy your pictures of the snow because in Arizona, it is 70 degrees right now. I am doing some gardening, planting some flowers and roses today. We moved from Chicago in 1976 so I know what all that snow is like. Don’t miss it! Have a great day!
Claudia says
Glad you’re enjoying miniatures, Deb!

Hi Claudia. YES! I love Miranda Mills! I watch her on YouTube all of the time and I follow her on Instagram as well. She is a treat. I will have to look into the movie The Dig you mentioned. I haven’t heard of that one…thanks!

She’s wonderful, isn’t she? And when I ask her a question via message, she answers right away.

Hi, Friend . . . just a quick note to say I love your house, love your blog . . . and please don’t ever quit. I enjoy your blog every day, even if I don’t comment. Isn’t life better not having to hear from that crook/con/grifter every day?! Your friend you’ve never met, Chris
Claudia says
Yes, it is definitely better!
Thanks, Chris.

I also watched and thoroughly enjoyed The Dig a few weeks ago. I remember learning bits about the Sutton Hoo haul at school.
Have you ever seen The Detectorists? It’s a wonderful gentle comedy series starring MacKenzie Crook and Toby Jones about two guys looking for Anglo Saxon treasure and also set in the countryside of Eastern England. I think it’s on Netflix and coincidentally the young guy who played Mrs Pretty’s nephew – actor Johnny Flynn sings the theme tune. It’s in the style of a lovely English folk song and worth a listen on YouTube.
Happy Tuesday
Claudia says
I haven’t. We’ll check it out, Dee Dee. Thank you!
Stay safe!

I’ve watched The Detectorists. What I love about English series is that, in many, actors don’t have to be perfect people, polished until they’re glossy.
Claudia says
That’s what I love about British series and movies.
