A sure sign of early spring, these tiny little grape hyacinths that spring up out of the rocks. There are a couple more coming up from the gravel by the porch railing. Such a little miracle!
Another sunny day today, but rather windy. Nevertheless, I’m so grateful for sun. Right now, it’s shining on the roof of the folk art dollhouse, as if a spotlight had been turned on.
We got our groceries yesterday, though several items were not included as they weren’t in stock. The way this particular store set-up goes, there’s no altering the order once it has been placed and, even though I believe the ‘make substitutions’ box had been checked, that didn’t happen. So we didn’t get salad greens, or an alternative size of coffee, or another kind of whole wheat bread, or, we thought, potatoes. Disappointing, but I was able to see all of that online before the order arrived, so Don went to our local nursery/farmstand, after first calling them and finding out exactly how they are handling all of this. Only ten people in the store at the same time, social distancing – Don never had to get within 6 feet of anyone, including the cashier. He got some bread, some potatoes and sweet potatoes, some bananas, etc. When he brought them home (which was before the grocery delivery) we washed all of the potatoes, and put them on the counter to dry.
The delivery itself was handled very professionally – they called us when they were about 10 minutes away from the house, Don told them where to put the groceries on the porch and we talked to the guy through the door. We also left a tip on the porch railing (held down by a rock). We wiped everything down before we brought it in the house and washed all the produce.
A lot of washing and hand washing and sanitizer, but we’re okay for now. We do need more items that we left off our original list and I can’t seem to get a delivery appointment. I think now that people know this will extend through the end of April, more and more requests for home delivery are being made. Don’t know what we’re going to do about that. It was so good to get some fresh vegetables again! We almost never eat canned veggies, though we are perfectly prepared to if necessary, and we have several cans on hand.
Thought you might like to see our pantry extension, which is in the office upstairs:
Boxes of canned goods – that green box is full of them even though it looks like it only contains potato chips – extra bags of potatoes, paper towels, oatmeal, etc. We have far more potatoes than we need because it looked like they were ‘unavailable’ on the original order, which is why Don went to our farm stand, and when the grocery order arrived, there were two bags we didn’t expect! From no potatoes to an overabundance of potatoes.
Every time Don has to go upstairs for something, he says he’s going to our corner store.
Crazy times we’re living in. We keep saying that to each other. Absolutely crazy and, a mere month ago, unthinkable.
I’m still reading Wildfire at Midnight, though I should finish today. I must mention this about Mary Stewart’s writing. She writes so beautifully and descriptively about place. This particular book takes place on the Isle of Skye amidst mountains and crags and waterfalls and her descriptions are so vivid, so evocative, that I am completely there in my imagination. I can see it.
This is something I didn’t appreciate as much when I was a teenage reader of her books, but boy, do I appreciate it now. She was an exquisitely gifted writer and it’s such a pleasure to read her books again – this time as a much older reader.
Happy Thursday.

Bonjour Claudia,
Like you, as it is impossible to have a delivery from online sites, I went shopping this morning taking my precautions. I must say that the store where I get my supplies does the right things. A distance of 2 m between each customer in the queue and we can enter when someone goes out, No more 20 persons in the same time in the store. The store offers disinfectant wipes to everyone. Almost all the departments are supplied. So no problem to get my supplies.
I sent you my photo ready for shopping (ah ah)
I love muscaris (grape hyacints) in spring associated with jonquilles. Here the sun is shinning but the mornings are chilly.
Passe une bonne journée et courage à tout le monde.
Claudia says
Yes, I feel better when I know a shop is taking extra precautions. I’m glad you are being careful, Helene.
Stay safe, my friend!
Barbara W. says
Our online supplier for work is out of anything associated with cleaning, so my co-worker and I have been keeping the office clean out of our own resources. Thankful to be working , but those Lysol wipes are doing a number on our hands. I have to take my daughter for blood work after work today. We had a frantic trip to the doctor the other day thinking it was appendicitis. The thought of any sort of surgery at the moment is really scary. Trying to stay positive, but it’s also bitterly cold and snowing here again. Maybe I should invest in some potato chips – what brand do you and Don prefer?
Claudia says
Praying all is well with your daughter today, Barbara. I’m sorry this is happening.
My favorite brand is Wise Low Salt Chips, but they’re a regional brand, I believe. Since I try to cut back on salt, these are my favorites.
xoxo
Barbara W. says
Thank you so much for your kind thoughts – I didn’t mean to sound so negative!
We are truly grateful for what we have and still manage to find a laugh every day despite the constant anxiety. Those potato chips sound awfully yummy! I don’t know if you’ve read The Blessing by Nancy Mitford – might be a fun addition to the TBR list.
Claudia says
You didn’t sound negative, just worried. I’ve heard of The Blessing but haven’t read it yet, Barbara. I’m currently into her ‘trilogy.’ Take care.
Chy says
Barbara, I hope your daughter is well and it’s not appendicitis. Our daughter just had surgery on the 13th at the Royal Alex in Edmonton and she was well taken care of and did amazing but I was thankful to take her home that night. It was scary not knowing if we’d be exposed to the virus. But almost 3 weeks in, she’s healed well and we’re all still healthy. Best wishes and fingers crossed she’s okay!
Sincerely,
Chy

Oh, Kathy. I understand. It must be very unsettling having to work right now. I am praying for you as you help others, which IS what you do for a living. I think of Biblical verses that address just that thing. You will be protected, my friend.
My hair is about 4 inches too long at the moment. It’s making me nuts!
Take care and stay safe.

Ask Don to cut your hair Claudia ! that may be interesting !

Kathy-in-Iowa, it’s ok to be scared and worried. It’s NOT ok to keep it to yourself. Claudia created a safe place here and we’re all in this together. Use your commen sense and wear gloves and masks whenever you need to. I’m sure the elderly who receive the boxes of food are grateful. After they open their door, they probably step back so you can bring in the box. You stay safe as you continue being an angel to those in need

Hi Kathy
Just echoing what others have said about the safe haven that Claudia has created here, and how it’s good to hear and share the worries we all have – and we do all have them.
My younger son is a Doctor in Australia- my oldest daughter a Research Chemist working out of Imperial and working on Covid 19 – they both agreed you are past any exposure time- perhaps worth talking to your co workers and manager about how to make sure you and your clients stay safe with the very important work that you do-

Happily, we are very well provisioned as I started gettin jumpy about this at the end of February. And our daughter, who has turned into our loving prison warden, lives nearby and includes us in every grocery and pharmacy run she and her husband make. We are almost out of fresh vegetables and I was so looking forward to some salad greens yesterday, but they’ve postponed their trip until the weekend. No complaints. I miss Wise potato chips so badly! Lucky you!
Claudia says
Oh we got provisions back then also, but we run out of things and we don’t have adult children who can get things for us. It’s just us.
Oh, aren’t Wise chips the best? Glad you’re safe and that you have family there for you, Margaret. Stay safe.
Margaret says
We appreciate how lucky we are to have our daughter just a mile away, and willing to shop for our friends who have no family and are in the vulnerable group. She’s an essential city staff member, so has to go to work, but isn’t in contact with the public. Because she works for the city she can give us the inside scoop on what’s going on. Her former husband, still close to us, works for the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston’s medical center, and is another source of good information as well.
Claudia says
Valuable resources in every way, Margaret! xo
Dee Dee says
Hi Claudia,
I’m having serious potato chips (or crisps as we call them) envy! They’re nowhere to be seen along with baking products like flour, butter. My son managed to get the last loaf of bread, alongside eggs. No cakes, biscuits (maybe not a bad thing). We managed to get some fresh fruit and vegetables last weekend when a friend kindly shopped for us.
I’ve never ordered online before and there’s no point as all slots are booked up for weeks. Fortunately, there are three supermarkets within a mile but very little on the shelves!
I enjoyed Mary Stewart books, especially Touch Not the Cat.
Happy Thursday
Claudia says
I didn’t see the actual shelves at the store, but I imagine they’re missing a lot of stock – deliveries are slower, food manufacturers impacted by the virus, that sort of thing. We’ll take what we can get, right? Stay safe, Dee Dee!
siobhan says
Hi Dee Dee
I am in London – South Ken- and the only thing I cannot find is flour! Everyone it seems is baking.
Hope you are staying safe

We haven’t explored having our groceries delivered yet. Grocery shopping in person is different than it used to be…we wear gloves, sanitize our carts, wash or sanitize our food upon returning home . Who would’ve thought? Our pantry and freezer are stocked…the hardest thing to keep up on are fresh fruits and veggies, that’s for sure. And, I refuse to run to the store as I used to just to pick up fresh greens. Once every two weeks is often enough.
I can’t say I’m familiar with Mary Stewart either. I’ll have to add her to my list…it is growing. It’s nice out today…think I’ll check up on my perennials. Stay safe! ;)
Claudia says
She has always been popular but was especially so when all of us were teenagers. Wonderful writer.
Yes, we are having to do everything differently. Sanitizing everything, including the food!

I’m trying to stay so calm and am succeeding in most areas, but groceries is a worry. We went last week so we’re good for awhile but I’m dreading the next trip out. Stores are doing an amazing job of limiting numbers, tape on the floors, sanitizer everywhere, etc. But we’re both high risk and would really rather just stay home. However, living rurally, we haven’t yet found a store that will deliver, even though we’re not far out at all. I may look at a Costco delivery as an alternative depending on how long this will last. Other than that, we’re doing just fine, keeping super busy with work and also taking time each day to do something fun. Yesterday, I opened up a kit I had bought years ago and made a dollhouse coffee table, a hutch and a little wall shelf. Didn’t think I’d have the patience or the eyesight to do this but feeling quite proud of myself today! Will do more a bit later.
Take care and enjoy your treks to your upstairs “corner store” ….
X Chy
Claudia says
I think Costco delivery sounds like a good idea if you can swing it – that way you don’t have to be out there, Chy. Stay safe!
Barbara W. says
Hi Chy,
Some of the grocery stores are offering curb-side pick up which helps.
Also, Save On Foods seems to be keeping up with the demand for Lysol wipes and toilet rolls.
Take care – maybe I’ll get to say “hi” in September at the mini show and sale.
Barbara W.
Chy says
I’m going to try the curb side pick up for sure. Just found out the local greenhouse is doing this too. They have a virtual link where they’ll take you around the store to pick out what you’d like and then you come to pick up. Nice idea.
I’d love to meet you at the sale in September. Fingers crossed this virus ends soon for the World and we can all look forward to fun events again!
X Chy
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Well, I have to say, if there was one item that I would like to have in abundance, it would be potatoes!! I love them ~ way too much. We are down to our last 5 right now which makes me quite nervous. But we do have some hash browns in the freezer, so that gives me a bit of peace of mind. How funny. Did I ever think I would write something like that in my lifetime? Nope… and today on our news they showed the farmers in our state dumping milk into the fields. With schools and restaurants etc. closed, there isn’t the need. It is so very very sad. That broke my heart a bit to see those clips.
My husband is in the other room practicing hymns for Palm Sunday service on-line this week. He is playing “What the World Needs Now” that he will be including as part of the Prelude. Amen.
Claudia says
I love potatoes. I could live on them! And the potatoes from the farm market are so much better than the ones at the grocery store. It’s a win-win!
How terribly sad about the farmers having to dump their milk. Heartbreaking.
Amen indeed. Thank your husband for that song choice! Stay safe.
Nora Mills says
We haven’t done delivery yet partly because our house is kind of off the road with a rough driveway. And as I’ve mentioned, my husband is a hunter/gatherer. But it sounds like your experience was largely positive. Nice to have a local farmstead for really fresh stuff. We’ve had an abundance of berries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries which have been very good even tho they are from the supermarket. Very summery treats. A few weeks ago I did a major cleanup of one of our deep kitchen cabinets so we have ample space. Growing up, my mom did a big shopping at the base commissary about once a month and by the end of the month dinner was somewhat ad hoc. I’m used to having backups of items, but my husband is a one can of soup at a time kind of guy. He’s learning that we need to stock up and I’ve noticed that I feel far more comfortable in general when we have a full pantry. Day whatever here, not as many as you, but if the food supply in the markets lasts and there are no riots, now that gun/ammunition stores have been declared essential (my ass!), we should be OK. Until the next extension. Virtual hugs.
Claudia says
I do, too. In fact, I don’t think I can go back to the not-so-full pantry we had before. Stay safe, Nora!

Is it Day 20 already? Not for me, but for you. At least it isn’t the dead of winter, and you can see spring on the horizon.
I did a Walmart run on Sunday. Most everything I asked for was in stock. I never buy meat unless there is a great sale so that isn’t a problem. I forgot to get potatoes and am really regretting that now. I couldn’t even get pasta.
Before this all started I shopped a big shopping once a month. Now it’s every 2 weeks. I wonder why? Am I eating more? I pray not!
I always get frozen vegetables every time I shop even if I don’t need them. I have an abundance of those. Fresh on the other hand, not so much.
And don’t even get me started on dish soap.
I read yesterday’s post where you asked for positive things. My positive is this…when things are at their worst we become our best. It is very evident in the way we all help each other. I see it in families learning how to work out scheduling together.
I’m conducting my tutoring by phone. I call each one at a specific time. First they read to me (1-3 grade), then I read to them. The K students it is a bit more challenging, but we are managing.
The woman who owns the local used book store is going to go in today and pick out a bunch of books for me to read to my kids. Chapter books for the older ones and I have no idea for the K’s. I gave her my card info over the phone and we will meet up in a parking lot. I am so grateful that she is willing to do this for me. I don’t have any, not one, child’s book at home here. Why would I? My son is 36.
Snow is predicted for tonight, but being April in Minnesota I am not surprised.
Stay safe/

On this day I am feeling ever so grateful for friends who continually send loving messages.
While seeing incredible team work we are left grieving the loss of dedicated doctors, caring nurses, and brave first responders. May their families receive miraculous comfort.
Our food delivery went to someone else in error and my faith has taught me they need it more than us. Perhaps they have little children or are feeling abandoned. God knows their need.
I pray protection over each of you at all times. You have formed a spiritual and supportive bond through Claudia’s blog and that is a blessing she has given from her heart.

My daughter managed to find eggs the other day, but, she spent $12 for the dozen! I to,d her we are not that separate, and they better be the best eggs we’ve ever eaten.
Claudia, we make our own chips from potatoes. Just slice them as thinly as you can, toss in olive oil and herbs, place in one layer on a lightly oiled parchment line jelly roll pan or cookie sheet, and into a pre-heated 375-400* oven. Watch carefully so it doesn’t burn. When just browning, turn over. Bake until other side is golden brown. It’s a bit of work, but we like them.

It is grocery day for me today. I do it because my husband is working at home and can’t be interrupted. Also he is a coeliac and I need to ensure I havd enough gluten free food for him.
However, today I don’t feel like going out because I had two flu injections late yesterday afternoon – one the ordinary flu and the other for pneumonia – and my arm is so painful. I’ll go about lunch time when there are not as many people around. Then I have to bring it all home and bring it into the house and pack it away as well as clean it. What a job… I think I’ll have a very quiet afternoon when all of that is done.
Would love to read that book as I have been to the Isle of Skye recently. It was a lovely trip and the scenery was spectacular.

So sorry you had to deal with all of that today, Robyn. Take care now and rest.

The potato chips reminded me of my last shop before ‘the pause’ went into effect. My guilty pleasure is pork rinds – I know – terrible: salty, fatty- and so very good. When I shopped, there were so many products sold out. The snack food aisle was decimated except for the pork rinds, loads and loads of them. I refrained, but now I’m sorry.
Today would have been my husband’s birthday. In his memory, I did a take out of his favorite dinner, topping it off with his favorite candy: Snickers. Tonight I’m watching his favorite shows (dvds): Doc Martin, Poirot and Midsomer.
Claudia says
Thinking of you, Carol. What a lovely way to celebrate your beloved husband’s birthday. Stay safe.
Vicki says
Hi, Claudia; can’t be on here long due to some eye issues (did you get my email?) but wanted to say quickly how glad I am that you got in some food. We finally gave up with the store delivery and Instacart delivers tomorrow although, like you, some of what we ordered can’t be supplied. I think it will take a big weight off, as you’d said sometime back to me, to resupply a bit. I have had a heckuva time keeping my frustrated (with the whole mess!) husband from going out to the grocery store. You’re lucky you have a near-enough farm stand; we don’t. (I’m in the middle of agriculture, so it makes no sense that a SoCalifornian wouldn’t have access to one. We lay just slightly out of reach of too darn many services & things.) Wanted to add on to your post yesterday about feel-goods: A gal put out some kind of call to a friend which was shared with others somehow thru social media (in the L.A. area where my husband used to work); something about a child and an elderly parent at home, one of the two with a medical problem; she couldn’t leave to get medical supplies she needed (for one particular machine in the home, I have no idea what it was, but to do with whomever wasn’t well) due to fear of virus contagion, the one thing she really needed was distilled water for this apparatus, so the call via the friend went out and…one by one…jug after jug of distilled water appeared on her front porch. I guess she nearly collapsed in gratitude. Also, a TV feature locally where everyone in the family went positive-Covid, even the new mother with a one-week old baby, so thru friend-of-a-friend network again, another couple took in the newborn even though they four kids of their own, but everybody was all smiles, as much as they could be in the situation, and just another example of people stepping up. (I don’t think the Covid-sick couple personally know the couple caring for their baby. Can you imagine; yes we can. What if people are sick and there’s no one to care for their pets? If they have a relative who depends upon them? Everybody’s got to somehow keep communicating so that nothing and nobody gets left behind.) Gotta go…take care of yourselves and enjoy a good meal now!

hello Claudia, I’m at work in a moment of rest during the night, and the comments about french fries made me hungry, today I have to go to the market to buy fruits and vegetables and I’m going to buy french fries, we usually eat baked potatoes or in stew. The supply of the markets are normal, but many people complain about the price. I realize that although we are from different countries the world is going through similar problems. But all this will end and we will come out much stronger and more supportive. Hugs to all this blog is a lovely refuge
