Don’s Very Own Nirvana and Other Things

October 8, 2015 at 9:14 am by Claudia

Because miniatures are fun and moving them around is just like playing house when you were a kid:

10-8 don's nirvana

I call this: Don’s Very Own Nirvana.

This chair, a guitar, and all things Beatles? Heaven for my husband.

10-8 nirvana2

Oooh, setting up this studio is going to be a lot of fun!

Last night, we were watching Frasier  and he remarked on the furniture in Frasier’s apartment, saying that he’d read all of the pieces were made by famous designers. I said that the recliner was an Eames chair. He had no idea about the designer’s name, but I could tell he liked it.

He also has no idea that he’s getting his own Eames chair – albeit, in miniature.

It’s been sunny and warmish around here; simply beautiful fall weather.

10-8 my girl

My girl enjoying the sun.

10-8 wildflowers&bee

A bee savoring the wildflowers that are all over the property at the moment.

I forgot to share two items that were in the box of minis that Barbara sent to me.

10-8 mini games

Two games. Aren’t they great?

I think some lawn mowing is on the docket for the day. It’s grown pretty long from all the rain we had about a week ago. I’m halfway through Her Final Breath  by Robert Dugoni. I reviewed the first book in this excellent series here on the blog. This is the second.

I also stopped by my local library yesterday and brought home four books. There’s always a little pressure when I check out library books – especially if they’re new and have a limited checkout time. Oh boy. One of them is All the Light We Cannot See  by Anthony Doerr. I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about this book, so I figured it was high time I took a stab at it.

Happy Thursday.

Sounds like a fun day for you, Nancy! No, I’m not sure of the name of the wildflower. I wondered if it might be a version of the wild aster, but I’m not sure.

Oh no. It’s a long, long way off. I have to make some pieces, I have to save up to buy others. It will take a while, Doris.

Thanks, Lori! I’m not almost always sick, but I did get sick recently after mowing the lawn. Whether it was connected or not, I’ll never know!

I love that room for the TSP…all that memorabilia…super! It’s funny how when watching a movie or tv show, how sometimes we can get focused on the stage setting…it’s style. Happens to me all the time….I’m pointing out this or that, and actually forgetting about the story line. Be careful mowing…but it’s kind of nice to still have to do it…isn’t it? ;)

It is! And the grass is so green right now from all the rain we’ve had – the golden autumn light, green grass and beautiful leaves. Perfect.

I love the Eames chair with Don’s guitar on it. It looks like he’s hanging out in there already. I have to clean carpets in the bedroom today. I want to do it on a day I can have the windows open to help it dry out faster. Fun times! Have fun mowing Claudia!

We mowed all of the grass on the property! Whew! But it is so gorgeous out there today with perfect temperatures that we said, what the heck – let’s do it!

Oh, those games! Were they fashioned from match boxes?? People are so very clever. I am in awe when you display those little things. Do you remember the books about the little people who set up house using every day things they “borrowed” from the big people? Was it The Borrower’s?? I will have to look that up. I remember reading those many many years ago.
Take care mowing so it doesn’t set off the allergies. ugh. It is always something, isn’t it??
Enjoy this fabulous Fall weather. No sign of frost here in the 7-10 day forecast. yay!

I don’t know but they might have been, Chris.

Yes, it was The Borrowers – you’re right.

It’s gorgeous here, and since I see lots of little MG flower buds on the vines, Mr. Frost just needs to stay away for a couple more weeks!

    Lovely wildflowers.
Scout looks so fluffy! Did she have a day at the spa?

I like to find miniatures that evoke personal memories (my dollhouse is rapidly turning into a 3D scrapbook), so I bought the Scrabble game for myself as well. I suppose if I’m going for authenticity I should really have mini Scrabble pieces on the floor and a door slamming. (My mother and middle brother didn’t play nicely together.)

I don’t know about shipping costs and import duty to America, but ELF Miniatures in the UK has some nice under-the-counter fridges. Their website is fun to window shop.

ELF Miniatures is exactly where I was planning on getting one!

No day at the spa, she’s just darned fluffy any day of the week.

And I get it – games in our family inevitably ended in someone yelling and getting angry.

Yay! Their product is awesome. Are you thinking of a particular colour/finish for any cabinets or shelves? These things really sort of evolve on their own, don’t they?

I found kind of a neat resource the other day for miniatures. The frame shop I use let me dig through their box of scraps. (No, I do not dumpster dive.) They have to buy the mats as whole pieces, so all the pieces they cut out are normally binned. I was after (and found!) a bit of marble-look mat for a fireplace top.

What a fun studio it will be! I love watching Fraisier re-runs…wouldn’t a miniature of Marty’s recliner, complete with thin strips of duct tape, be funny? I’m waaaaaay down on my library’s request list for All the Light…, but I should be getting notification about being able to check out Jan Karon’s book soon. Glad the sun was out to warm Scout….it’s been in the high 70’s to low 90’s here, even very very warm in San Francisco, after the fog lifts.

The studio is looking great. I love the Beatles memorabilia since they were my first rock n roll crush. Scout is looking good. I love these sunny days. I read ‘All The Light We Cannot See’ and it is very good, I think you will enjoy it. Glad the mowing went well. I had my Scout today and she got to touch Charlie for the first time and was so intrigued by him! It was fun to have her here at my house where I will start keeping her two days a week now.
    hugs,
    Linda

So much fun to see things coming together for Don’s studio. Love the miniature games, too.

Hope your allergies aren’t suffering after the mowing. Our weather has totally deteriorated here in SoCalif. We were hot so early and stayed at 102 degrees all afternoon and it’s supposed to be the same for tomorrow and Saturday, pretty much. We get short glimpses of relief but then it all seems to go out the door and we’re back in a heatwave again. And we haven’t even seen the (hot, dry) Santa Ana winds yet…so, better weather for us, I fear, is a long way away yet. I’m not even inland; I can see the ocean from our foothill neighborhoods. We should be cooler than this! At least it’s nice to know that other people are enjoying the right kind of Fall, with those pleasantly-warm days but cooler nights! Enjoy while you can, right?!

All the Light We Cannot See – the title alone is so intriguing and I’ve heard much about this book. It’s apparently intense but with amazing writing, so I’ll look forward to your review (not everybody liked it, you know). There was so much written about the book due to the Pulitzer award for fiction; it got a lot of ‘press.’ I guess the author wrote it over a long period of time. The next book I’m reading is The Lost Landscape: A Writer’s Coming of Age by Joyce Carol Oates. I believe she had another book which was in competition with Mr. Doerr’s prize-winner. I haven’t read her for a long time, so I figure I’m due to revisit her work.

The weather here has been pretty wonderful lately, although today is cloudy and potentially rainy. But yesterday, as we mowed all of our property, the sun was shining and it was quite beautiful!

All The Light We Cannot See was excellent. I really loved it. I just finished A Man Called Ove, one of the best I have read/listened to all year, or maybe in a few years.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
