Egging Me On

March 28, 2018 at 10:10 am by Claudia

We’re in that in-between time here in the Hudson Valley. It looks like the worst of winter is gone. It’s slowly getting warmer. But the landscape looks bleak.

It will be a few weeks before I can begin cleaning up the garden beds; that leaf mulch needs to stay there a bit longer to protect the plants. The waiting game has begun.

But I’m sure happy that winter seems to be on the way out the door!

More egg cups. It’s so hard to get a good photo of this little shelf that I found years ago in an antique shop. It hangs on a wall in the den, between two windows. There’s a table and lamp in front of it. And it gets very dark in that corner. Thank goodness for photo editing options!

Full transparency: this little shelf holds some of my favorite egg cups.

On the top shelf – One of my largest egg cups, a guy with a top hat. The head is a salter and is lifted out to access the egg cup. This would have been one of a pair of egg cups, one for salt and one for pepper. I suspect the little cherub next to it is really a toothpick holder, but I have made it an honorary egg cup because it’s so adorable. Then there’s Humpty Dumpty, with an egg that Don brought back from Prague serving as his crown.

Middle shelf – One of my favorites, the bunny artist painting the egg. (Middle-of-the night bidding war.) Next, a pig getting ready to dine on an egg (made for Tiffany). And then, one of my 1939 Walt Disney dwarfs, Grumpy.

Bottom shelf – Three more dwarfs: Dopey, Doc, and Bashful. And some little wooden ducks/chicks that I found in an antique shop several years ago.

The search for the remaining three dwarfs and Snow White is ongoing. It’s taken me 16 years to collect the four that I have!

In other news…Don told me the ‘critic’ from the New York Times  got so much backlash about his/her review of Escape to Margaritaville, that he/she felt compelled to write an op-ed defending the review. I don’t mind saying that I laughed gleefully when I heard that bit of news. It’s alright not to like something. We don’t all agree. But to write in a mean-spirited manner, to make it personal? That’s not what a respected critic does. That’s not what anyone who calls themselves a critic should do.

I cancelled my subscription over this one. I was already on the fence about it, due to all the “Hillary’s emails” crap they published leading up to the election, but this sent me over the edge. Bye bye, New York Times. And that sorry excuse for a critic can kiss my tush.

Happy Wednesday.

It is fun to see how many of the dwarfs you have. I know they are hard to find or very pricey. I love the cherub eggcup even if it’s just honorary, it fits right in! We are having a spell of cold weather and it’s making the early blooms die. I’m ready for some sunshine and warmer days.

Good to hear the NY Times critic got so much flack. I agree, it’s ok to not like something but to be so ugly about it, snarky isn’t professional. I hope you are feeling better!

Yes, we’re going to have rain and cloudy skies for the next four days. Oh well!

Slowly feeling better! Though I just had a coughing jag.

Oh my goodness, that critic! I read the actual review and wanted to say very unpleasant things to her! Reviewers have tough jobs, and do get a bit snarky, but they are not suppose to get personal!
So, I just finished reading her defense of her review article…really?? She must be one very unhappy person.

    Moving on.

Love the egg cups! I must look for more! They are so cute and as far as a collection, they take up very little space. Space is something that is lacking in my apartment!

    Have a great day!

Very unhappy. And not in good standing with the readers at the moment. Every night, the house is full and the audiences go crazy and have such a good time.

      Thanks, Debbie!

good for you that you cancelled your subscription. I think we should all cancel more things and tell them why. I told Kroger that I do not go to their store any more because of the guns. Won’t ever go back again.

We have to do more of that, for sure. I have stopped using so many sites/businesses and will continue to do that until changes are made, starting with Walmart about 15 years ago!

Karma always wins in the end. We need to always remember that.

Seriously, so fun to see the egg cups again!! Glad to hear you are feeling better. Supposed to be 55* here today. But a high of 37* on Easter. The beat just goes on.

    Have a grand Wednesday!!

it made me think of that movie with David Niven and Doris Day. he was a Broadway critic that had become ‘too full of himself’ and thought his wit more important than an honest critique. he didn’t even realize what he’d become.
a show unto himself! it’s a great old movie. . . “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies.”
there were some of the same thoughts in the one with Lucille Ball and Bob Hope.
wonder if the NYT ‘wit’ ever saw himself in those two films? was it “Critic’s Choice?”
that old fashioned NY intellectual snobbism doesn’t cut it anymore! the people speak! lol

Yes I think it was Critic’s Choice. Don said I should hope that this guy finds some joy in life because he certainly doesn’t seem to have any. Perhaps the snark and cynicism is blocking it…

It’s not nice to fool with Baby Boomers or Parrot Heads, Jesse Green! (And I’m glad that some people thought you were a girl.) Meanwhile, those egg cups are awfully cute, Claudia!

Or to fool with anyone who recognizes an unfair attack when they see it. All I know is that the audiences love it and come back again and again.

      Thanks, Shanna!

I enjoy the egg cups. Bravo, the critic needed to be chastised sounds like to me. I’m hoping to see some sunshine here in MO today, it has been days of gloom and rain.

I ain’t playing, if you know what I mean. I’ve been in theater for 40 years and I know when a reviewer has a bias. Personally, I think there shouldn’t be reviews anymore and publications like the Times are no longer powerful in that regard as social media is far more powerful and there are so many ways to get the news.

Can you imagine the higher ups calling him in to a meeting …. that would be fun to watch!

Hope you can find the cups you’re missing. I’d love to see what Snow White looks like.

Snowing at home for us today. However, dh and I are out on a tiny island on the West Coast and the weather here is balmy with sun. Loving our trip so far. Hoping by the time we head home, the snow will have melted away, every last piece of it!

Enjoy your day. I can’t wait to garden too this year. Dreaming of warm dirt and tiny buds.

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall! Actually, I wish I could meet him in person and give him a piece of my mind.

So glad you’re getting away to a lovely place, Chy! Enjoy!

agree about reviews. i just skip them.

more cute egg cups. just came home from hearing john hiatt play at a beautiful old opera house (love him and the venue) tonight, read your post, did a check on ebay and saw a set of four egg cups ($20) that made me think of you … because you’re from michigan, right? these say (rather unevenly, but clearly on the back) “eat michigan eggs”. f-y-i.

hey, do you leave on a sound to notify you of comments on your blog? if so, hope this one’s arrival won’t wake you up (it’s almost midnight here).

also hope that you are feeling better.

No, I have no notification sounds for that very reason! Thanks, Kathy!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
