Escaping is Good

September 13, 2017 at 10:17 am by Claudia

I took my plants back home with me last weekend, hoping to lighten the load that I’ll be dealing with later this week when I move back home. This shefflera was in the aqua McCoy pot – which I loved – but I thought it looked pretty in this Guy Wolff pot. And somehow it needed to be on the French bistro table in the living room.

Done.

I drove back to Hartford yesterday afternoon and watched the show last night. For a Tuesday night audience, this group was wild! They laughed and laughed and had such a good time. I think that, especially in this time of political upheaval, hurricanes and earthquakes, people need an escape. Theater offers an escape. For 2 or 3 hours, one can be transported to another time and place. When that production is just plain funny, what a joy it is to have the opportunity to release in laughter. It is for me, and I know this production very well. Escape to Margaritaville  will be much the same. An escape for those who need one. I’m proud that both Don and I are part of productions that provide that. Laughter helps to heal. In our own way, we’re part of a temporary solution.

Speaking of Don, he’s settled in and is now managing the trip from Jersey City to Manhattan quite handily. He catches a bus a block from his apartment. It gets him to the Port Authority Bus Terminal (the same terminal we use when we take the bus from our neighboring town) in twenty minutes. Rehearsals are a block from the terminal. All good. They worked on music on Monday. Yesterday was what we call the Meet & Greet. When you’re doing a big Broadway musical, the Meet and Greet involves literally hundreds and hundreds of people; producers, publicists, agents, investors, cast, crew, writers, etc. Jimmy was there, as well. Now they’re doing table work. There are script changes and song changes and new cast members to bring into the fold.

That hollyhock is still blooming. In fact, when I left yesterday, there were even more blooms.

I might be leaving tomorrow but all of that depends on Darko and his assessment of the show. If he ‘freezes’ it, that means no more notes from him to the actors and I will freeze my notes as well. We’ll see. He’s rehearsing some sections this afternoon and we’ll see how it goes tonight. It’s a wonderful production, wildly funny and touching and beautiful and magical. As it should be. Once again, Darko has outdone himself. He’s amazing.

Last Saturday, there was a historical preservation tour going on in Hartford and the building I’m in was on the tour. There is a penthouse apartment that sits on the top of the building – all glass – and I’ve always been curious about it. It turns out it’s two apartments and since one is empty at the moment, we were allowed to see it. I’ve always been curious about it so I grabbed the chance. Unfortunately, you take an elevator to the twelfth floor and then you have to climb up three flights of stairs (and there are a lot of stairs) to get there.

In other words, in order to live there you have to be young and in great physical shape.

Nevertheless, I arrived – panting –  and viewed the apartment. It was smallish, same floors as I have here, same sort of kitchen, but the light and the windows and the views! Goodness.

From one of the windows – this view of the Capitol and part of Bushnell Park. Imagine watching the fireworks from here! You can see all the way to the Connecticut River from the other side of the apartment. Beautiful.

Okay. Have to go and send some notes to the actors.

Happy Wednesday.

Sounds like a wonderful production! I agree theater can take you away for a few hours to a magical place. Laughter is such a bonus! I can tell you are ready to go home and nest a bit. The change in weather has me feeling more like Fall then even a few days ago. Irma’s path has brought some cooler temps. The tree in my front yard is changing colors and as I sat at my work table this morning I started a watercolor of the tree. It’s been weeks since I painted and it felt so good. I think life is slowly setteling down. We are still having Sara’s family come over for dinner and baths since they continue without power. We hope school will be back in session tomorrow, even Tiger said he misses school. Enjoy your day and big hug!

Glad you’re back to painting, my friend! Here’s hoping Sara’s power comes back on soon!

Hope you get to go home earlier than later and the move will go smoothly. That is a gorgeous view from the penthouse. Three flights of stairs will certainly keep one fit, but also provide plenty of opportunities for second thoughts about going out again if one forgot to buy that loaf of bread or jar of olives….

Exactly. And imagine lugging 3 or 4 bags of groceries up those stairs!

Ugh! I imagine carrying all those groceries would be like a scene I saw earlier this summer. A man was walking to one of the local used book shops with two huge cartons of books. He’d carry one carton a few feet, drop it onto the sidewalk, then go back to walk the second carton down a few feet, drop that one down. Repeat. It looked exhausting!

Poor guy. I’ve been there. Especially when I lived in apartments with no car!

Wow! What a view that penthouse affords. But a price to pay (climbing 3 flights) to have it. As you said ~ likely for those in great shape, and probably young! Bringing home groceries surely wouldn’t be a fun thing.

Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Maybe that is what we all need…. an international laugh day. There certainly is enough to cry about. Laughing would be welcome!

Fun if you can get home soon, so hope the production goes well today. We have a picture perfect day here to enjoy, so I must get some things accomplished before I look up and find it is over!! Not that it has ever happened……. ha!

That is a gorgeous view from the penthouse…but the price of that would be too high for me…three flights? No thank you….about the time I got home, I’d have to go out again to get the one thing I forgot at the store. I hope you get to come home early…I think a good nesting is in order. You know what they say…laughter IS the best medicine. And I think we could all use a huge laugh right about now! ;)

Beautiful views from that penthouse apartment; nice to see the layout of the land, bird’s-eye view. Funny-strange thing, though; as I’ve aged, I’ve inherited my dad’s uneasiness with height. I’m more comfortable on the ground whereas I formerly only chose 2nd/3rd-floor apartments and used to play in a treehouse a lot when I was a kid (very cool, built into a tall eucalyptus tree; we climbed up the trunk on a nailed-in ladder which somehow didn’t bother the big ‘ol, thick ‘hide’ of that ancient, gorgeous tree; it had a rope you could swing from, over a large water-filled barranca [in SoCalif, that’s like a ditch or bayou where water naturally flows out of the mountains and down the canyons but not necessarily attached to a creek or river]; I never fell in the water and would instead land on the embankment on the other side, which was my friend’s backyard). Anyway, nowadays, heights just give me the willies and make my tummy lurch.

You’re in darn good shape to be able to climb all those stairs, Claudia!

Actually, I thought my chest would explode! These were steep stairs in a building with 16 foot high rooms. Yikes!

WOW, what a view, but you’re right, you would have to be young and fit to live there. xo Laura

That view is gorgeous. Climbing stairs is a chore to say the least. My sisters and me climbed 8 flights when my late mother was in the hospital. The reason is we all do not go in elevators.

This is why I like to thank you and Don occasionally for the work that you both do…providing entertainment for people in this world full of troubles and worries is such a wonderful thing!..Now about that penthouse apartment…I was thinking that if whoever lives there can afford the cost then they can probably afford to have their groceries delivered up those 3 flights of stairs!..lol..

Not really; the lady who showed us the apartment said they are rented at a lower rate because there is no elevator to their floor. So they’re pretty affordable!

I so enjoy learning about the before-the-opening work that goes into a theatrical production.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
