I’m home for 48 hours. I got home in time for one of Don’s great dinners (how I’ve missed his cooking!) and The Manchurian Candidate on TCM. I’ve seen it many times, but I’ve watched it twice since Trump took office and its chilling premise is not far off from our current political climate. What seemed only faintly possible at the time it was released is happening in its own way now. Frank Sinatra had to hold the release of the film at the time as the assassination of President Kennedy by Lee Harvey Oswald, who had Russian connections, was so devastating that the subject matter of the film would have been too much.
It’s always been chilling. It’s even more so now.
Don found some treasures in our ongoing archaeological dig in the corral:
Another portion of a plate with gold edging and blue flowers, another piece of the plate, and a white marble. Pretty soon I’ll be hiding these in a tree just like Boo Radley did in To Kill a Mockingbird.
The hollyhock that I planted this year has new growth near the base of the plant with flower buds. By the way, everything needs to be weeded here. There’s been a lot of rain in the last week and I can tell! Some of it was so heavy that it beat down some of the phlox and coneflowers. And a nest fell out of a tree.
Morning glories – this morning.
And zinnias.
Lots to do here today. Work on the sticky floor, laundry, weeding and weed whacking.
Finished the Michael Connelly on rehearsal break yesterday – it’s excellent! I started Karin Slaughter’s newest but it’s a bit slow going at the present. I’ve learned to trust her writing, though, because she knows what she’s doing.
Happy Sunday.
Hi Claudia~I love the flower pictures this morning~Hollyhocks~ morning glory and zinnas some of my favorites! so glad you are enjoying your time at the cottage “Happy Sunday!” hugs!
Thank you, Carol!
All are good things—flowers, good books, homecomings, coffee on the porch! I have morning glory envy. Mine are coming, but ever so slowly. First microscopic buds appeared just this morning. Will they bloom before we leave? On the docket for today in these parts: making focaccia, potato salad, roasted chicken; doing laundry, a bit of dog clipping…(resisting my inclination to hate ellipses right now)…all very exciting endeavors. Enjoy your forty-eight hours.
The smaller sized morning glories are doing much more blooming than the big ones. Interesting!
Had to water early today due to heat and high humidity. It’s been a mild summer for the most part. Your flowers are beautiful. Enjoy your Sunday at home.
Very humid here, as well. I’ll definitely be watering!
You have so many flowering plants, Claudia! They are lovely and colorful. Isn’t it nice to be home and in your routine again, if only for 48 hours?
Yes it is. Although I couldn’t get to sleep for a while last night – too many beds, I suppose!
So good to see you home and enjoying Don’s cooking and the garden! Lovely flowers and sunshine! I’m on the waiting list at the library for The Late Show and can’t wait to read it. So much to do before heading back to Hartford! Enjoy!
It’s really good. A great new character/series to follow. And he’s got another Harry Bosch coming out in the fall!
A man that can cook & likes to do it too! Wow, Claudia. You must have been a VERY righteous person in your last life. You probably hid a Jewish family in your barn or something during the war. SOMETHING that earned you Don, at any rate. LOL. Enjoy your Sunday at home. Lots to do BUT – you’re home. A very good thing. Enjoy your Monday too! Peace. #Resist 🇺🇸
PS – 40K marching in Boston & entirely peacefully to boot. Beware, orange Cheeto – the end may be nearer than you think.
Oh, and if you haven’t already seen this clip, here’s my pick for best way to combat neo-Nazis [from a rally in S Carolina I believe]:

I’ll check out the video, Janet. I was so impressed by the peaceful marchers yesterday. Thanks!
PS. Oh yes! I saw this yesterday – brilliant.
Those Morning Glories are gorgeous. The piece of plate Don found is so pretty.
Marilyn
Isn’t it pretty? Now I have another plate to hopefully piece together!
Love that white marble Claudia!..It seems that Don has taken very good care of your plants…Enjoy your time together…
Except for two indoor plants. I told him they would probably be fine until I got home, but the two newest got very dry (because he doesn’t pay attention to them if he doesn’t have to!) Still and all, he’s doing a great job.
I haven’t seen rain for so many months now that it’s starting to feel like Calif drought again. Rain envy here!
We didn’t get but a few drops of rain in Hartford. Just here.
So glad you have a couple of days home with Don. Enjoy!
Judy
I will, Judy. Thank you1
So glad you are enjoying your time at home! Pretty soon Don will have a new stove to cook those meals on.
Silly me, I was watching “At Home in Mitford” on Hallmark. What a mistake. Turned it off. Could not be farther from the storyline of the dear book. Andie Mac Dowell as Cynthia (!??!) and Father Tim is a trim 40-something “dude”. The explanation for Dooley is that he is spending time w/ his grandfather because his parents were both deployed!!!! Unreal.
Hope the rest of your Sunday was good and that your Monday is happy & productive, too! Safe travels as you head back.
Oh my! Why would they do that to a perfectly wonderful story? I can’t imagine Jan Karon was too happy about that!
Oh dear, I always pictured Blythe Danner as Cynthia, and someone like William Christopher (the priest from MASH who played Father Mulcahy) or someone similar. As as someone who’s read & loved all the Mitford books, I can be so glad I don’t get the Hallmark Channel. I never understand how they can get the casting so right on something like OUTLANDER, then so wrong on something like this. I hadn’t even realized they’d made it into a series. Of course, I still haven’t forgiven the Hallmark Channel for cancelling CEDAR COVE.
I am not a Hallmark Channel fan. I don’t think I’ve ever truly watched anything on it and after what they did to Mitford, I don’t think I ever could!
