Hiding the Duvet

August 9, 2013 at 8:52 am by Claudia

dreadedduvet

Not the most attractive photo I’ve ever taken, but you get the point.

Claudia’s new rule: When on the road, all duvets encountered must be immediately taken off the bed and stored in the closet, to be replaced by handmade quilt.

Of course, this isn’t always possible. For a stay of, say, seven days or less, replacing the duvet with a quilt might be impractical. I might have traveled by plane, for example, and transporting a quilt for such a short stay would be a hassle. However, if I drove to the destination? Yes to the quilt.

When I stayed in the hotel last year, the duvet was similarly thrust in the closet.

My friend Mary, who is the stage manager here, has written more than one Facebook status update about ‘duvet wrangling.’ It drives her up the wall.

For me, duvets are just too heavy since I tend to shed covers during the night. I once took an informal survey about duvets on this post: Do You Duvet or Don’t You? Rather like cilantro, it seems my readers either love duvets or dislike them intensely. No middle ground.

In case you’re at all interested, I don’t like cilantro.

Quilts are definitely more cozy, don’t you think? If I didn’t have a quilt, I’d substitute a lightweight throw. Or, in a pinch, I’d just leave the sheet and blanket.

mypals

These guys would look cute anywhere, but I think they look especially fetching on this quilt, don’t you?

Thank you for your kind thoughts yesterday. I had a busy day of one-on-one coaching and that helped. I had to focus on my work. But a feeling of sadness tinged the day.

I hope all is well with you. I have more individual coaching scheduled for today – it promises to be a long one. What’s on your agenda for the day?

Don’t forget to check out this post on Healthy Eating on the Go with Newtons cookies. They’re awfully tasty.

Also, if you haven’t already, remember to check out my most recent book review for Drift. I’m giving away a copy.

Happy Friday. (I had to look to see what day of the week it was. Once again, I thought it was Thursday!)

I really enjoyed todays topic! Years ago my brother bought me a down comforter. I went to IKEA and got a duvet cover similar to the one in your photo. It never goes on the bed…not even in winter! Hubby says its too hot and too heavy! So it gets moved everywhere but onto the bed. Think I am just going to have to send it to Goodwill! I am not a crafty one who can sew…I would love to get one of the Amish quilts..but they are SO EXPENSIVE! Guess I will just have to find one similar somewhere. Any suggestions of where to buy one reasonably priced?
Hope your sorrow diminishes as days go by. Its never easy to lose anyone…you can only find peace knowing they are in a better place. Take care Claudia.

I don’t have any suggestions, Marsha! I know how expensive it can be to make a quilt …
Thank you for your kind words.

I love duvets in the winter but the rest of the year, they are tucked away in our storage closet. Too hot!

I’m glad you were able to get through the day yesterday. Hard when your heart is heavy with sorrow.

Today, I’m off to set up my classroom for our grieving children’s summer daycamp next week. We use art, music, drama, puppetry and play for kids to understand the grief journey they have embarked on. Busy, busy week. Hoping I can get it all done today so that the weekend can be quiet and relaxing.

    Hope your day goes well.

I get totally groused out by the bedspreads at hotels and that is the first thing I whip off. You are kinder than me, I stuff it in a corner because I don’t even want to touch it. LOL
What? You don’t like cilantro? I love the stuff and could eat it on everything.

I’m not in favor of duvets either…their are too confining and heavy feeling to me. You could make yourself a bed scarf, to drape over the mattress at the foot of the bed…for those times when you have to fly. I have to spiff up the house today…just a little…since you reminded me that today is Friday! ;)

I use a duvet cover only (no stuffing) on my bed in the summer. It is the perfect weight! I love a quilt on my bed in the winter! Hope you are having a good day and the weekend is also a good one.

I love duvets in the Winter…Summer I have a quilt on the bed but usually throw it off. My most favorite quilt we can’t use on the bed…it came from Nanno’s house (my husband’s grandmother) and is a beautiful patchwork that is backed in solid wool. Can you say heavy? It actually hurts to have this quilt on top of you!! But it is beautiful and we have it draped over a love seat in our son’s bedroom. Hoping your weekend is peaceful and relaxing.

My grandmother’s quilts were like that. She used wool blankets as batting. Very, very heavy.

Oh my! what a chuckle your photo has given me!!!! I laughed QUITE OUT LOUD! (L.Q.O.L!!!) I love it!
I’m seasonal on the duvet. I don’t know if that is middle ground or not. But summer…No way!
    Winter… I’m ok with it.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your friends. My heart is heavy for my friend today, she just lost her brother last nite.
    Yes. It too…was Cancer.
I think it touches us all, in some way.
Have a blessed day my friend. Pat

First off, I am so sorry for your losses, I had to go back and read as I missed your post. What a rough week, I know you must have been very emotional.

Duvets. I don’t like them only because my comforter gets lumpy in them and I like my bed to look smooth, but I am getting less anal. I just happen to keep falling in love with some that I see and can’t help myself if they go on sale. I love to change out my bedroom, it’s my sanctuary. That said, I use the lightest weight comforter ever. I found it at Marshall’s and I don’t feel the weight of the duvet at all. i don’t use a blanket under it, just a top sheet. I get hot at night, too. I hope to find a quilt (light weight) that I like soon, but with winter approaching, I will hang on to my duvets.

Speaking of hotel duvets and quilts/blankets/bedspreads, A lot have stopped using them for sanitary reasons. Now you mostly see lightweight blankets and I soft sheet over the bed which is easily changed everyday. Just a little note because I despise “sharing” bedding as much as you do! And I know you are in an apartment, but it’s almost the same situation.

    XO,
    Jane

BTW…I noticed when I type my comments, there is a short lag between typing and the words appearing on the screen. Not happening anywhere else. Has anyone else mentioned this?

No one else has mentioned it and I type my comments/replies in the same place and it doesn’t happen to me. I think the lag has to do with something on your end. I know that sometimes that happens to me on other sites if my internet is slow or if I need to restart my computer and clear my cache. Anyway, I’ve not had that problem on my end.

Thanks for your kind words, Jane.

I love love love cilantro. Might be an acquired taste. I don’t remember liking it when I was younger. Just the past five years or so.
I have a cotton duvet. Bought it at Goodwill for 7.49 It is like having two top sheets. I don’t have a blanket in it. Living in AZ no need for heavy blankets this time of year. I love it because I use it like a sheet and it gets washed with the bottom sheet. No tucking in and just one big shake in the morning and my bed is made. It was made in Israel and has scenes of hammocks and barbeques.
kind of different but I like the happy scenes that it shows.

I hadn’t read your post from yesterday until now…I am so sorry for these recent losses in your life. My heart has been very heavy this evening as well, as I only found out a few hours ago that my friend’s father passed away very unexpectedly today from a pulmonary embolism. He was only 61 years old. And my friend’s little boys (ages 9 & 4) were there with him when he was dying and her sister was doing CPR on him…OMG, I just can’t even imagine. Those poor little boys.

On to happier subjects…duvets and cilantro. Hate duvets (except in winter when it’s below zero) and love cilantro!
