Hydrangeas, Books, and Babylon Berlin

June 29, 2024 at 9:14 am by Claudia

My Endless Summer Hydrangeas are really providing a show this year! It must be because of all the rain we’ve had, because the previous two summers yielded about 2 or 3 blooms. This year? Lots and lots! The soil pH must be changing as well. The colors of the flowers are very striking.

These are in the garden bed that adjoins the memorial garden. So they’re just outside the kitchen door.

I’m going to do some weed trimming today, but not too much, as I think it’s going to rain later this morning. Don is going to recycle at our transfer station. He just served me some eggs, bless him. (I’ll have some oatmeal – my favorite – later.)

I finished a great book by Rob Rinder – a British author – yesterday. Thank you to reader Dee Dee, our resident librarian, who recommended him. He’s, among many other things, a barrister who has written two mysteries involving a young barrister. He’s a fabulous writer and boy, was this first book – The Trial – great! I ordered it from Blackwell’s in Oxford/London and it arrived very quickly. I’ve started the first book in Elizabeth Jane Howard’s Cazalet Chronicles: The Light Years. (Also from Blackwell’s, but a couple of years ago.)  I’ve heard raves about this famous series for years. In fact, here’s the blurb from this edition: “If I were sent to a desert island with one book this would be my choice” – HRH The Duchess of Cornwall (now Queen of England.) She is a strong advocate for reading and books and I read her recommendations often.

And speaking of Dee Dee, if you’re reading this today, I’m happy to say we’re going to begin the 4th season of Babylon Berlin tonight. I know you watched it a couple of years ago, but we couldn’t see it because Netflix had some issues with the distributors, When I learned last year that Netflix had given up on Babylon Berlin, I was so, so disappointed. Periodically, I would do a search to see if anything had changed and this year, I learned that MHz – a streaming service – had acquired the rights to stream all four seasons, though they just released the 4th season this week. Babylon Berlin, as I have written on this blog in past posts, is simply one of the best series I have ever seen. We’re so excited!

I just learned that the brilliant Martin Mull passed away. I loved his work, hearkening all the way back to Fernwood Tonight  so many, many years ago. I still watch clips from that series on YouTube and laugh out loud. Rest in Peace, Martin.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

When you’ve finished the first three Cazelet books, treat yourself to the BBC dramatization, it’s quite good. I read most of the books several years ago, broke down and bought the whole set a few years ago as our library no longer had the whole series; you’re in for a good time.

Thanks, Margaret! Though I tend to stay away from adaptations of books I’ve read. My mind has already conceived everything about the characters at that point.

      Stay safe.

As a rule, I too, dislike dramatizations of favorite books, but I found this adaptation quite good and would watch it again.

Look at that hydrangea. So pretty. Mine are doing quite well this year, too. It’s definitely the rain. We are 6 inches over are norm, quite the contrast from last year when we were in a drought. Thank you Mother Nature! However, with all the rain comes the weeds…no surprise there. And, there are weeds that need to be picked. That’s on the schedule for tomorrow, when it’ll be cooler.

The books sound interesting…I’ll add them to my ever growing list. Have a good weekend! ;)

Well, at least we got some good out of way too much rain!
I’ve been weeding a bit here and there.

      Stay safe, Donnamae.

glad you’re enjoying some more reading. i checked the books you mentioned; they all sound great and have been added to my “tbr” list (which is a whopper now many, many pages long). thank you.

glad that you can watch the continuation of a much-enjoyed tv series now, too.

    and those flowers … beautiful!

working on little projects and spending time with family. also this morning, i saw earl sit up on his haunches for many seconds right by the window; he was looking in the window and watching us, too, and i think hoping we’d get the message that it was past time to put out some peanuts (i overslept a bit) … haha. i love earl and the other squirrels and the birds. they are to me like your flowers are to you. :)

supposed to be a bit cooler today and tomorrow. i am grateful for that.

hope you, don and everyone else have a wonderful weekend and stay cool and safe!

I bet they are. Though my little critters here are very dear to me – it’s just that the cast changes from year to year.

      Stay safe, Kathy,

they are all dear, aren’t they? and they add joy and sweetness to each day.

i think our group changes often, too, except for earl and burl. they have some distinguishing physical characteristics and earl just is so brave and gets close so i know he’s more familiar to us, too. love them all.

        happy monday! stay safe.

        xo,
        kathy

Yes, I am here and so thrilled that you finally get to see Babylon Berlin 4. There’s a song in it which I promise will become an ear worm. I still find myself humming the time even now!
Also, so glad that you enjoyed Rob Rinder too.

    Take care and Happy Saturday

So glad you read the post, Dee Dee. I think we’re going to watch the last episode from season 3 first to get caught up because it’s been at least 4 or 5 years since we’ve seen BB.

      Thanks so much.

      Stay safe.

I meant to add that I have the Cazalet Chronicles on my bookshelves too. Read them many years ago.

We don’t have netflix anymore. Alas…

I’ve thought about the Cazalets for quite sometime, so let us know how you like it. I’m at the lake — it’s 50 and damp and windy. We’re pretty settled in now — Rick cycled up and got here Friday; I got here yesterday. It’s a good cozy day for a book. My back is kicking in badly and the cough emerged (after being so good) so I’m all for taking it easy and enjoying a quiet Sunday. I hope your day is a good one.

It’s not on Netflix – I was writing about the fact that Netflix was no longer carrying it.
It’s now on Amazon Prime via MHz.

      Stay safe, Jeanie.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
